Placencia to Belize City: Bus, Flight and Shuttle Fares, Both Directions

Re-checked on 24 September 2026 on two bus operators’ own pages and ticketing system, Maya Island Air’s site, Tropic Air’s baggage and fares pages and four shuttle companies’ own pages. Tropic Air’s fares and departures are as its booking engine quoted them on 6 September 2026, for travel on Wednesday 16 September 2026; we could not re-check them on 24 September 2026.

The bus is BZ$20.00 and leaves Placencia once a day at 6:15 am. The plane was from USD 155.00 to the international airport or from USD 134.50 to the downtown airstrip when Tropic Air’s booking engine quoted it on 6 September 2026. A private shuttle is US$265 or US$275, depending which page of the same company’s site you read. Every one of those is a one-way figure, and the return direction is not a mirror image of the outbound: for the date we priced, 16 September 2026, Tropic Air’s engine listed three flights from the international airport to Placencia and two back, and there is exactly one through bus each way per day.

The four ways, priced

The two ends of that range are the two best-documented: the bus operator publishes a full rate card, and the airline’s engine showed a seat price when we searched it on 6 September 2026. Everything in the middle — the shuttle market — is where the published numbers stop agreeing with each other.

The bus: Ritchie’s Bus Service

Ritchie’s publishes its own fares. This is the whole card, in Belize dollars, as printed:

The operator states “Rates are in Belize Dollars. 2 BZD = 1 USD.”

One caveat sits with every figure in that table: the rates page is served with a Last-Modified date of 28 May 2020, which we checked by requesting the page directly on 6 and again on 24 September 2026. It is the operator’s own rate card rather than a third-party quote, and it is over six years old as published. Ritchie’s stamps no revision date on it.

And the page a reader gets today is an archived copy of itself. The HTML ritchiesbusservice.com served us on 6 September 2026, and again on 24 September 2026, carries Internet Archive replay code — WB_wombat_Init('/web', '20160422143908', 'www.ritchiesbusservice.com:80') — and loads its assets from web.archive.org. That embedded timestamp is 22 April 2016. The live domain is serving a Wayback Machine capture of the old site under a 2020 Last-Modified header, so the fares above are the fares that site published in 2016. Whether Ritchie’s charges them now is not something its own website can tell you.

The timetable

Monday to Saturday:

On Sunday the two through services still run — Placencia 6:15 am north, Belize City 3:30 pm south — and the Placencia-to-Dangriga feeders drop from three to one, at 2:30pm. Dangriga to Placencia runs 11:00am and 6:15pm.

So the through bus is a once-a-day proposition in each direction, and the two do not meet: you go north in the morning or south in the afternoon. The 6:15 am northbound run is the only ground service on this page for which any operator publishes an arrival, and on Ritchie’s own figures it takes about 4 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 45 minutes with the stops — our arithmetic on its 6:15 am departure and its “around 10:30 – 11am” arrival. No arrival is published for the 3:30 pm southbound.

You cannot book a seat. Ritchie’s states: “PLEASE NOTE: We do not take reservations for seats… You pay the conductor on the bus. We do not have any private shuttles, but can make arrangement for you for one.” Its rates page adds that between December and June tickets can be bought in advance at the PTBO Office on the main road next to Wallen’s Hardware store and the BTL office; “Other wise just get on bus and pay conductor.” Telephone 501-523-3806.

The other bus company’s booking system still returns nothing

James Bus Line runs the southern corridor and sells tickets through its own online system at go.jamesbus.bz. We ran it five times on 24 September 2026 — Belize City to Independence, Independence to Belize City and Belize City to Dangriga for 7 October, plus Belize City to Punta Gorda for both 30 September and 3 October. Every search returned “no bus trip found”, including the two Punta Gorda searches — the only route the company advertises a fare for on its own home page (“Belize City to Punta Gorda 12.00”, with no currency label).

That is the same result the same system gave us on 26 August and 6 September 2026, so it is reproducible across four weeks rather than a one-off outage. We cannot tell you whether the buses run and the website is broken, or the other way round.

James Bus does not enter the peninsula in any case. Placencia is not among the 64 boarding points in the company’s own dropdown; Independence and Independence Junction are. Independence, also called Mango Creek, is across the lagoon.

The crossing from Independence to Placencia is run by the Hokey Pokey Water Taxi, and its own website redirects to a Google sign-in page — we tried again on 6 and 24 September 2026 and got the same login screen we got on 26 August. No schedule, no fare. Second-hand figures for it exist; we are not printing a number we could not read at the source.

Flying: two Belize City airports, two prices

Tropic Air sells this route out of both of Belize City’s airports, and it does not charge the same for them.

All four priced on 6 September 2026, one adult, one way, for a travel date that has now passed. We could not re-check them on 24 September 2026, so treat every fare and departure in this table as the engine’s 6 September quote and confirm it on the engine before you book. On that quote the municipal airstrip was USD 20.50 cheaper than the international airport in both directions — our arithmetic on the engine’s two figures — and takes ten minutes longer, with an extra stop.

Two things the timetable does that the fare does not. The return direction has fewer flights: three southbound to Placencia from the international airport against two northbound, and both of those northbound departures are before noon, so on 16 September there was no afternoon Tropic Air flight off the peninsula to BZE. And the municipal-airstrip route showed “No Flight” on Sunday 13 September and Saturday 19 September on the engine’s flexible-date strip, against USD 134.50 on all five weekdays. That is what the engine returned for those two dates; we did not test other weekends, so we cannot tell you it is a standing weekend gap.

The two directions are also not the same routing: TZA to Placencia goes via BZE, and Placencia to TZA goes via Dangriga.

On the Placencia-to-Belize-City search Tropic Air prints its own warning: “If you are traveling onward with another carrier from the Belize International Airport (BZE) we suggest you allow three (3) hours for your connection. Tropic Air will not be responsible for missed connections.” Applied to the 11:50 AM departure in that 6 September quote, which arrives 12:20 PM, that is an onward departure no earlier than 3:20 PM — our arithmetic on the airline’s own rule and its own arrival time.

Maya Island Air publishes a timetable and no price

Maya Island Air serves Placencia from both Belize City airports and publishes no fare for it, or for any route. Its booking engine returned HTTP 403 to our requests on 6 and 24 September 2026, and mayaislandair.com/booking/ returned a 404 on both dates. That is our route in failing rather than the airline declining to quote; someone at an ordinary browser may get a price where we could not.

What it does publish is a timetable, as a picture. From the international airport: to Dangriga and Placencia at 11:00 AM, 12:10, 12:30, 1:30, 2:40, 3:30, 4:25 and 5:00 PM, plus seasonal 6:30 and 7:30 PM departures marked “RESTRICTED FOR PASSENGERS ARRIVING VIA INTERNATIONAL CARRIERS”. Back from Placencia: 7:00, 8:30, 10:00, 11:00 AM, 12:00, 1:00 and 2:00 PM.

From the municipal airstrip: to Dangriga and Placencia at 8:00, 10:00 AM, 12:00, 2:30 and 4:15 PM; back from Placencia at 7:00, 8:30, 10:00 AM, 12:00, 1:00, 2:00 and 4:00 PM.

Every one of those times comes off a graphic dated 8 February 2023. We requested all nine of the airline’s schedule images individually on 6 September 2026, and again on 24 September 2026, and each returned the same Last-Modified date, between 20:07:06 and 20:07:22 GMT that day. Nothing on the site is dated later, its footer still reads “Copyright 2022 by Maya Island Air”, and it stamps no validity period on any of it. We flagged the identical date on the identical nine files when we priced the run from the international airport out to San Pedro. Treat the set as the airline’s standing published document, not as today’s service.

Maya’s own Placencia page calls it “only a forty minute flight” without saying which Belize City airport it is measuring from. Tropic Air’s engine gave 30 minutes from one and 40 from the other in its 6 September 2026 quote. The Placencia BTIA calls it “just a 30-minute scenic flight” from the international airport. Luggage

The two airlines answer this very differently, and only one of them gives you a weight.

Maya’s per-pound excess rates are published for five routes out of the international airport, and Placencia is the second dearest of them: BZ$0.88 a pound against BZ$0.41 to San Pedro or Caye Caulker, BZ$0.46 to Dangriga and BZ$1.13 to Punta Gorda. No excess rate is published for flights from the municipal airstrip.

Tropic Air’s fare-family table — the one that says LITE carries no free checked bag — is published only for itineraries that touch the international airport. For everything else its Fares page says: “Fare products and benefits vary by route. Start your booking search to see available fares and benefits for your trip.” So there is no published baggage table covering the municipal-airstrip run to Placencia, and no weight limit on any Tropic Air route.

Maya asks you to “KINDLY CHECK-IN AT LEAST 40 MINUTES BEFORE FLIGHT DEPARTURE TIME” and recommends booking at least 24 hours ahead. Its Placencia terminal numbers are 501-523-3443 and 501-523-4072.

Shuttles: four operators, and the prices do not line up

All read on 6 September 2026 and re-read on 24 September 2026, when every figure in this table was unchanged.

A fifth operator prices this exact direction, which we read only on 24 September 2026: Pacz Tours lists “Placencia ➔ Belize City $275 USD” under “Standard Transfer Rates (2 Guests)”, with “Additional Passengers: +$20 USD per person”. That is a vehicle price for two, not for three as on Julian Transfers’ page — so a party of three pays US$295 on Pacz’s card against US$275 on Julian’s, our arithmetic on the two published structures.

Two of these operators contradict themselves on price, and two contradict themselves on time. Julian Transfers gives $265 on one of its own pages and $275 on another, minutes apart in our reading. Untame Belize’s page carries “$275/pp” and “1-3 pax” side by side — which cannot both describe the same price — and then a FAQ answer of $35 to $50 per person, which reconciles with neither. We are not choosing between them; we are telling you they are what the operators publish.

The one thing worth taking from the price column is the shape Julian Transfers gives it: a fixed vehicle price covering one to three people, plus $25 for each person beyond that. On that structure a solo traveller pays the same as a party of three.

The drive time nobody agrees on

Put together the figures published by the four shuttle operators and the tourism association we read on 6 September 2026 and re-read on 24 September 2026, plus Pacz Tours, read on 24 September 2026, and the range is 2.5 to 4 hours:

• 2.5 hours — BZ Shuttle Service, Placencia-to-airport page
• 2 to 3 hours — BZ Shuttle Service, same page, different sentence
• 3 hours — Julian Transfers’ listing, Untame Belize’s route table, and the Placencia BTIA
• 3 to 3.5 hours — Julian Transfers’ description, Untame Belize’s FAQ
• 3 to 4 hours — Pacz Tours, for Belize City to Placencia and Hopkins
• 3.5 to 4 hours — BZ Shuttle Service, Placencia routes page

That is this page’s six sources only; our Placencia page reads a wider set, re-read on 24 September 2026, and records a spread of 2.5 to 5 hours. None of the sources on either page is a road authority or a government body. The only timed through service we found is the bus, and it allows about 4 hours 15 to 4 hours 45 minutes with stops — which is the top of the shuttle range plus the stopping.

The road itself is described consistently, at least. BZ Shuttle Service: “you travel north on the Southern Hwy, then onto the Humming Bird Hwy at the capital city, Belmopan. And then about 1hr drive onto the Western Highway & The International Airport road in Ladyville.” The same operator says there are no stops except restroom breaks on request, and that it takes US dollars and Belize dollars only — no traveller’s cheques, no torn or marked notes — at 1 USD to 2 Belize dollars.

Julian Transfers is the only one of the four that publishes a cancellation policy: 50% deposit if booking more than 60 days out, full pre-payment 30 days before arrival on all bookings, 24 hours to cancel free, then 95% of deposit refunded 60–90 days out, 75% at 30–60 days, 50% at 15–30 days — all less a 4% processing fee — and everything forfeited inside 14 days. No refunds for airline delays, strikes or hurricanes.

Placencia Shuttles publishes hours instead of prices: 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, seven days, contact Angelica Paiz on +501 639-4344, and “All transfers are private but can be shared ONLY if you agree.”

What this means for the trip

The three modes are not three prices for one journey. The bus is a stopping service that leaves the peninsula once a day at 6:15 am and reaches Belize City around 10:30 or 11. The flight to the municipal airstrip is 40 minutes with two stops; the flight to the international airport is 30 minutes with one, and cost USD 20.50 more on Tropic Air’s 6 September quote. The shuttle is door-to-door on your own schedule at a vehicle price, and it is the only mode where you cannot find out what you will pay without asking.

If your onward connection is an international flight, the airline’s own three-hour rule and the bus’s 10:30–11am arrival are the two numbers that decide the day. If it is not, the 6:15 am bus at BZ$20.00 is the lowest fare published on this page; the only other figure anywhere near it is Untame Belize’s FAQ answer of $35 to $50 per person, which its own booking box contradicts.

Maya Island Air’s Placencia page says that along the peninsula “you will find Maya Beach, the Garifuna Village of Seine Bight and at the very south end, the Village of Placencia” — separate places strung along a peninsula the Placencia BTIA gives as 15 miles long and less than a mile at its widest. Which of them you are actually going to is what decides the last leg, and our Placencia page works that end of the trip.

What the operators don’t publish

These are gaps in the operators’ own information. We looked, and they are not there:

• Where in Belize City Ritchie’s bus departs from, and what time the 3:30 pm southbound arrives in Placencia. The operator gives an arrival window for the northbound run only.
• Whether Ritchie’s rate card is current. It is served with a 2020 Last-Modified date, carries no revision note, and the page itself is an Internet Archive replay of a 22 April 2016 capture.
• Any James Bus Line fare for Belize City to Independence or Dangriga — and the currency of the one figure it does show.
• The Hokey Pokey Water Taxi’s schedule and fare. Its own site sits behind a Google sign-in.
• A rate from BZ Shuttle Service or Placencia Shuttles. Neither publishes one on any Placencia page.
• A round-trip shuttle price. Julian Transfers (“Book One-way or Round Trip”) and Pacz Tours (“Round-trip and group discounts available”) both offer round trips and print only one-way prices.
• Any Maya Island Air fare, and whether its 2023-dated Placencia timetables are currently flown.
• A checked-bag weight limit from Tropic Air, an excess-baggage fee, or which fare families apply on the municipal-airstrip run.
• A taxi fare between Placencia and Belize City. The only published taxi figure we found is for rides inside Placencia village — one shuttle operator’s “shouldn’t cost more than 5 BZD ($2.50 USD) per person”, which says nothing about the highway.

What we did not check

Separate from the list above, because these are our limits and not the operators’: round-trip pricing on any mode, since every fare here was priced as a one-way search; and whether Tropic Air’s municipal-airstrip service is absent every weekend or only on the two weekend dates the flexible-date strip covered.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the booking systems, timetables and operator pages named below on 6 September 2026 and re-checked everything except Tropic Air’s booking engine on 24 September 2026; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

The flight fares, flight times, departure lists, routings, weekend “No Flight” entries and the three-hour connection notice all come from four live one-way searches on Tropic Air’s own booking engine, run on 6 September 2026 for one adult travelling 16 September 2026; we could not re-check them on 24 September 2026. The bus fares and timetable are transcribed from Ritchie’s Bus Service’s own rates and schedules pages, the 28 May 2020 date on them comes from those pages’ own HTTP response headers, and the Internet Archive replay code and its 22 April 2016 capture timestamp come from the served HTML of those same pages, requested again on 6 and 24 September 2026. The James Bus result is our own testing: five route-and-date queries run through the company’s live ticketing system on 24 September 2026, repeating the five we ran on 6 September, plus its own boarding-point list read out of the booking form. The Hokey Pokey finding is a live fetch of the operator’s own URL.

Maya Island Air’s timetables were read off two of its nine schedule graphics, and the 8 February 2023 date comes from the HTTP metadata of those files, requested one by one — all nine returned it. Its baggage allowance and per-pound excess rates come from its own baggage page; its 403 comes from a live request to its booking host. Tropic Air’s baggage figures come from its baggage and fares pages, including two fare-comparison images whose own Last-Modified dates are 5 and 11 August 2026.

The shuttle prices, drive times, route description, payment rules and cancellation policy come from the four operators’ own pages, each read on 6 September 2026 and re-read on 24 September 2026. Where an operator contradicts itself we print both figures and name the pages. Where two operators disagree we print both. Where an operator publishes nothing we say so rather than estimating.

Figures on this page labelled our arithmetic are calculated by us from the sourced inputs cited below — differences, currency conversions and elapsed times. Every other figure is reproduced as its named source published it.
