Hopkins, Belize: Getting There, What a Night Costs, and What Is Actually Nearby

Verified on 24 September 2026, on the Statistical Institute of Belize’s own census workbook, the National Meteorological Service’s climate normals, three Hopkins properties’ published rate cards, the Belize Audubon Society, the Belize Fisheries Department, Tropic Air and two banks’ branch listings.

Hopkins had 1,767 people at the 2022 census, as the Statistical Institute of Belize’s workbook displays it, and a bed in the village costs between US$16.00 and US$939 a night depending on which of three published rate cards you read. The drive from the international airport is 130.4 km and two hours when you add up the eleven legs one resort publishes — against 71 km from Belize City on a shuttle operator’s page. Dangriga airstrip is about 40 to 50 minutes away by road, and Tropic Air publishes no usable BZE–Dangriga fare — for the reason set out below; we priced no Maya Island Air route.

The village is small, the price ladder is not, and almost every number below had to be taken from an operator rather than an authority — the government pages we read give the population, the rainfall and a marine reserve’s size and rules, and no prices.

Getting to Hopkins

The drive, leg by leg

Hamanasi publishes its own directions with a time and a distance against nearly every turn. Our arithmetic on its eleven legs: 120 minutes exactly, and 130.4 km — about 81 miles. That is the most granular published account of this drive we found anywhere:

BZ Shuttle Service publishes 71 km between Belize City and Hopkins. It publishes its airport shuttle to Hopkins as “approximately 2.5 hours one way”, with “no stops along the way for this shuttle except restroom breaks upon request” — and 71 km in 2.5 hours would be, on our arithmetic, about 28 km per hour, although the two figures sit on two different pages of its site and start from two different points. We print both distances and do not average. Both operators agree the drive takes roughly two to two and a half hours; only one of them publishes a distance that fits that.

The route the operators describe is the same: west out of Belize City on the George Price Highway, south onto the Hummingbird Highway at Belmopan, then right onto the Southern Highway. Coming north from Placencia or Independence, the Funky Dodo hostel puts the Hopkins turning “on your right about 3 miles after the Sittee River turn off.” At the Hopkins Junction there is a Puma gas station and Watson’s Hardware Store.

Anyone routing through Cayo will recognise the second half of it — Hamanasi’s San Ignacio directions give Belmopan to the Southern Highway as ~1.5 hours, 48 miles, 76 km, then a further 2 hours 1 minute and 66.2 miles in total by our sum of its published legs, though it puts no number on the San Ignacio to Belmopan stretch itself. It also warns of “many one-lane bridges on the Hummingbird Highway.”

Flying to Dangriga

Tropic Air lists “Dangriga & Hopkins (DGA)” among its daily-flight destinations and says it flies there “several times a day from the Belize City International and Municipal airports as well as Placencia and Punta Gorda,” with the airstrip “in the north part of town.” Its Dangriga page publishes no fare and no timetable.

The only figure Tropic Air attaches to this route anywhere is the “From USD $” lead-in widget on its flights-to-Dangriga page, and we are not quoting it. That is the same widget our getting around Belize by domestic flight page declines to quote, because the number it shows is inconsistent with the airline’s own booking engine and carries no fare breakdown. The saved copies of the Dangriga page show why: on 6 September 2026, and again on 24 September 2026, it attached one and the same headline price to two different date pairs in the same HTML. So there is no Belize City–Dangriga fare on this page. The one Tropic Air route we have priced on the airline’s own live booking engine is Belize City airport to San Pedro, not this one.

Hamanasi puts the connecting flight at “approximately 20 minutes, typically in a 14-passenger plane,” charges “a $25 USD up-charge per person per flight to/from Dangriga with most Hamanasi packages,” and recommends booking an international arrival by 4pm to make the connection.

Transfers and buses: one operator publishes, one refuses

Hamanasi publishes transfer prices; we found no independent shuttle operator that does.

BZ Shuttle Service, which markets Hopkins routes from the airport, Belize City, San Ignacio and the Belize City water taxi terminal, publishes no price for any of them: “Our services doesn’t has prices due to fuel changes. Please contact us to book your shuttle.”

The bus is worse documented still. The Hopkins stop is “in front of the Police Station,” the run to Dangriga “will only take an hour,” and Belize City to Dangriga is “around three hours” — all of that from a shuttle company describing its competition, not from a bus company. None of the pages we read on 24 September 2026 gives a bus fare to Hopkins. The nearest thing to a figure is “the bus will be just a few dollars but expect crowding and multiple stops along the way.” The Funky Dodo hostel describes James Bus as “the service between Belize City and points south to Punta Gorda, including Hopkins Village,” without a fare or a time — but its own getting-here page does publish the last leg: buses from the Dangriga terminal into Hopkins at 10.30am and 5.15pm, “no buses into Hopkins Sundays or holidays”, taking “roughly 25 mins to reach the Junction”. The same page puts a taxi from Dangriga to Hopkins village at “around 40 – 50 USD for up to 4 people.” That timetable comes from a hostel, not from a bus company.

What a night costs

Three Hopkins properties publish full rate cards, and between them they cover the whole ladder. All figures are per night in US dollars, as each property publishes them.

Hostel — The Funky Dodo

Each additional person in the four-bed room is +US$11.50. “10.75% tax not included. High season rates +12%”, high season being 1 November to 31 May. Paying by card on arrival adds “an additional 6% bank service charge.”

The hostel does not agree with itself about its own floor: its booking page lists the dorm bed at US$16.00, while its getting-here and in-the-area pages both say “our accommodation starts at US$11.25 per person per night.” The same two pages also give its tour floor as US$30.00 on one and US$50.00 on the other. We are not choosing.

Beach resort — Beaches and Dreams

Per night, USD, double occupancy, excluding an 18% hotel tax and service fee; additional adults and children US$25.00 per night. The resort calls itself all-inclusive, but its rates page does not say what these room rates include beyond “complimentary use of kayaks, and bicycles.” The same page carries a banner reading “Get 50% Off Rooms Through October 2026” and does not say which of the rates below it applies to.

Dive resort — Hamanasi, 2026 rack rates

Per room, double occupancy, excluding a 9% hotel tax and a 10% service charge which “will be automatically added to your bill.”

Peak-season rates are not published — “Inquire with reservations staff for peak season rates.”

The three tax lines are all different — 10.75%, 18% including service, and 9% plus 10% — and none of them is in the headline price. That pattern, and every other tax that lands on a Belize fare or room, is worked through on our what a Belize trip costs page.

The dates that decide the price

Hamanasi publishes its 2026 calendar, and it is the most concrete piece of seasonality any Hopkins business puts in writing:

A three-week September closure at the village’s dive resort is a harder statement about the season than any prose description of it. The page carries the 2026 calendar and 2026 rack rates only; when we read it on 24 September 2026 it gave no rates or season dates for travel after 4 January 2027.

The rain, from the station nine miles away

The National Meteorological Service publishes 1991–2020 normals station by station. Melinda Forest Station sits 9 miles from Dangriga Town — the closest published record to Hopkins — with 30 years of rainfall behind it.

Savannah Forest Station is “approximately 30 Miles from Dangriga Town” and is the wetter of the two in seven months of the twelve — February, March and June through October. Melinda is the wetter station in January, April, May, November and December. Our count, month by month, on the two published columns.

Both stations put the driest month in April — 53.5 mm and five rain days at Melinda, 48.6 mm and four at Savannah. They disagree on the wettest: Melinda’s peak is October at 301.1 mm, Savannah’s is September at 353.3 mm. Same authority, same period, two stations either side of Hopkins; we leave the disagreement standing.

One thing to know about how that table is published. The NMS gives an “Annual” figure of 176.0 mm for Melinda and 197.7 mm for Savannah. Those are the means of the monthly means, not annual totals. Our arithmetic on the twelve months gives 2,112.0 mm at Melinda and 2,371.8 mm at Savannah, and 2,112.0 ÷ 12 = 176.0 exactly. If you see “176 mm a year” quoted for this coast anywhere, it is a misread column.

We could not get the Atlantic hurricane season dates off the National Meteorological Service’s own site — on 6 September 2026 its storm and seasonal-outlook pages loaded their content through scripts and returned nothing readable to us, where the climatology tables above are static, and on 24 September 2026 the seasonal-outlook page again gave us no season dates and the tropical-weather page returned a 404. Our best time to visit Belize page works the rainfall normals station by station across the whole country.

What is actually nearby

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

The Belize Audubon Society manages it and publishes both the fee and the access.

The sanctuary “has expanded from 3,600 acres to 128,000 acres,” and links to Bladen Nature Reserve to make “a continuous corridor of protected areas totaling 250,000 acres.”

It publishes no accommodation prices. Five lodgings are described in detail — the Balum Naj cabin sleeping 6, the White House, a 30-bed dormitory, the Mujan Naj cabin sleeping 4, a rustic cabin sleeping 8 — plus two campgrounds and a rentals list covering tubes, kitchen use, a generator, binoculars and hammocks. Against every price it says: “Please Contact us for detailed Information.” Several of the bathrooms are cold-water only, and the lights in the dormitory and the Balum Naj cabin are solar powered.

None of the sources we read gives a distance from Hopkins to Cockscomb. The 20 miles is from Dangriga.

South Water Caye

The Belize Fisheries Department manages the reserve and publishes its scale but not its price: 117,875 acres, “approximately 47,700 hectares,” the second largest marine protected area in Belize, established in 1996, lying 18 km east of the mainland and forming part of the UNESCO Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System World Heritage Site. Its rules cap guided groups: “no more than eight (8) divers or snorkelrs per licensed tour guide at all times.” The department’s page says that “a fee is charged to visitors to the MPA” and does not give the amount.

Mayflower Bocawina

The only description with a number on it comes from the resort inside the park rather than from a park authority: “the 7000-acre Mayflower Bocawina National Park,” with “300 bird species identified,” part of the Belize Jaguar Corridor. We found no Forest Department page for the park, and no entrance fee, opening hours or distance from Hopkins in any source we read.

Published tour prices from a Hopkins base

Hamanasi’s rate card is the only full one we found, and it states that “a service charge and sales tax are included in adventure rates.” Per person:

Gear rents separately: mask, snorkel and fins US$15/day, full rental US$55/day.

Garifuna drumming: where it is, and the price no page we read gives

The Lebeha Drummers are “based at the Northern end (Lebeha means ’the end’ in the Garifuna tongue) of Hopkins Village,” and describe what they do as offering “local children the chance to learn drumming, dance and cultural heritage of our Garifuna ancestors.”

On price, the whole of what they publish is: “Stop by for a lesson when you’re in town.” No figure on their page. They also state: “We regret Lebeha no longer offers overnight accommodation.” Their site footer reads 2023.

The nearest published price for a Garifuna cultural activity from a Hopkins base is Hamanasi’s Garifuna Cooking Class at US$180 per person, half day — which is a different thing, and priced by a resort rather than by the village.

Money: there is no bank in Hopkins

Both of the banks we checked place their nearest facilities outside the village.

The Belize Bank lists two branches in Stann Creek District, in Dangriga and in Independence, both open Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Under Dangriga it lists three ATM locations: the Dangriga branch itself (2 ATMs), “Shop and Save Supermarket (Hopkins entrance)” and Xaibel Gas Station. The Hopkins-entrance ATM is at the junction — about 4 miles from the village on Hamanasi’s and the Funky Dodo’s own figures for the Hopkins Road.

Atlantic Bank lists exactly one branch in the entire Stann Creek District: Placencia Branch, Main St., Monday to Friday 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Its site carries a 2020 copyright line, so that list may be older than our check.

How big Hopkins is, and how it compares

The Statistical Institute of Belize’s Census 2022 workbook displays Hopkins as 1,767 people — 801 male, 966 female — in 572 households. The cells behind those whole numbers hold fractional values (the raw cell for Hopkins is 1767.2397966173114); the SIB’s 2022 Key Findings Report describes “non-response adjustment through the assignment of weights”, which is consistent with weighted estimates, though the workbook itself carries no note (checked 6 and 24 September 2026). We quote the figures as the workbook displays them.

On that table Hopkins is smaller than Silk Grass, the village you pass on the Southern Highway to reach it, and larger than Placencia — the village whose airstrip Hamanasi’s own transfer card prices at US$100 one way from Hopkins. Placencia’s own trade association publishes a much larger figure for its village, quoted on that page; the column above is the census, and the two are not measuring the same thing.

Note what circulates instead. BZ Shuttle Service tells prospective passengers that “Hopkins is a small but vibrant community of approximately 1,000 villagers.” The census says 1,767. Both numbers are in print; only one of them is a census.

What the operators and authorities don’t publish

These are gaps in other people’s published information. We looked and they are not there:

• Any bus fare for Hopkins, from James Bus Line or any other source we read. A shuttle firm’s “just a few dollars” is the nearest thing to a figure, and the only timetable — two Dangriga-to-Hopkins departures — comes from a hostel’s getting-here page.
• Any shuttle price. BZ Shuttle Service, which markets the route hardest, says outright that it does not publish prices.
• Any Tropic Air fare for Belize City–Dangriga, on any date. Tropic Air’s Dangriga page carries no fare and no timetable, and the “From USD $” widget on its flights-to-Dangriga page attached one headline price to two different date pairs on the same page on both dates we read it, so it is not a fare for anything.
• A price for a Garifuna drumming lesson, from the village’s own drum school or from any other source we read.
• Any accommodation or rental price at Cockscomb Basin. The Belize Audubon Society describes five lodgings and five rental items and prices none of them.
• The amount of the South Water Caye Marine Reserve visitor fee. The Belize Fisheries Department’s own page says a fee is charged and does not state it.
• Any distance or drive time from Hopkins to Cockscomb, to Mayflower Bocawina, or to the Sittee River. Cockscomb’s 20 miles is measured from Dangriga.
• Any entrance fee, opening hours or managing-authority page for Mayflower Bocawina National Park. The only description we found belongs to a resort.
• Hamanasi’s peak-season room rates. High, Shoulder and Low are published; Peak is “inquire.”
• The Atlantic hurricane season dates on the National Meteorological Service’s own site. Its storm and seasonal-outlook pages render through scripts and gave us nothing readable.

What we did not check

Separate from the list above, because these are our limits and not theirs:

• Live availability or a dated quote at any Hopkins property. Every rate above is a published rate card, not a booking we ran.
• Any Maya Island Air fare. We priced no Maya Island Air route for this page.
• Any Hopkins property beyond the three that publish full rate cards. There are more places to stay in the village than three; these are the ones whose prices are public.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the census workbook, climate tables, rate cards, park pages and airline pages named below on 6 September 2026 and re-checked every figure on 24 September 2026; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

The population figures were read out of the Statistical Institute of Belize’s own Census 2022 workbook, “Population by District, City/Town/Village and Sex,” downloaded from the SIB’s 2022 Census page. The rainfall and temperature normals were read from the National Meteorological Service’s Climatology (1991–2020) tables for the two Stann Creek stations, and the sums, the month-by-month station comparison and the monthly-mean explanation are our arithmetic on them. The leg-by-leg drive, the transfer prices, the room rates, the season dates and the tour prices come from the resorts’ and hostel’s own published pages, and the 130.4 km and 120-minute totals are our sums of the legs as published. The bus and shuttle statements, the Dangriga-to-Hopkins bus times and the Dangriga taxi figure come from BZ Shuttle Service’s own Hopkins pages and from the Funky Dodo’s getting-here page. Cockscomb’s fee, hours and access come from the Belize Audubon Society; the marine reserve’s scale and rules from the Belize Fisheries Department; the park acreage from the resort inside it, which is why it is flagged as a resort’s figure. We read the fare object embedded in Tropic Air’s own flights-to-Dangriga page and did not use it, for the reason given above; this page therefore carries no Dangriga air fare. Bank and ATM locations were read from The Belize Bank’s Branches & ATMs listing and Atlantic Bank’s Locations page.

Where two sources disagree — the road distance, the Dangriga drive time, the hostel’s own floor price, the wettest month, the village’s population — we print both and do not average.

Figures on this page labelled our arithmetic are calculated by us from the sourced inputs cited below — sums of published legs, monthly totals, and the implied speed on one operator’s own numbers. Every other figure is reproduced as its named source published it.
