Belize City Airport (BZE) to San Pedro: Flight vs Water Taxi, Priced Door to Door

Verified live on 26 August 2026, on Tropic Air’s booking engine and both water-taxi operators’ own booking systems, for travel on Wednesday 16 September 2026.

Tropic Air: 13 minutes nonstop, USD 110.00 one way, 15 departures, last at 5:40 PM. San Pedro Belize Express: USD 34.00, 1 hour 30 minutes, 8 sailings. Caribbean Sprinter: US$35.50–37.00, approximately 75 minutes, 6 sailings. The plane leaves from the international airport itself. Both ferry terminals sit elsewhere: both operators sell a separate airport transfer, which San Pedro Belize Express puts at about 25 minutes.

Once that transfer is counted, the two ferry operators land within a few dollars of each other, and the aeroplane costs roughly twice either of them at every party size we priced.

Tropic Air’s times come from its booking engine for Wednesday 16 September 2026 — 15 departures out, 16 back. Every BZE to San Pedro flight that day was nonstop at 13 minutes; on the return, the 6:00 AM is the only one that is not direct, shown as “1 Stop via CUK” and 20 minutes.

San Pedro Belize Express’s times come from its printed schedule and were confirmed departure-for-departure against its live booking engine for the same date. Caribbean Sprinter’s come from its booking system.

The last boat off the island is 4:30 PM; the last flight off it is 5:00 PM. In the other direction the two tie: the last sailing to San Pedro is Caribbean Sprinter’s 5:40 PM and the last flight is Tropic Air’s 5:40 PM, to the minute. San Pedro Belize Express stops earlier, at 5:30 PM.

Fares, one way

All priced on 26 August 2026 for one adult travelling on 16 September 2026.

Tropic Air returned USD 110.00 on every one of the 15 outbound and 16 return departures. San Pedro Belize Express returned USD 34.00 on all eight sailings in both directions. Caribbean Sprinter varies by departure: outbound 08:00 US$36.50, 10:30 US$35.50, 13:30 US$36.00, 15:00 US$36.50, 16:30 US$37.00, 17:40 US$37.00; returning 06:00 US$35.50, 07:00 US$37.00, 08:00 US$36.50, 10:00 US$36.50, 13:00 US$35.50, 16:00 US$37.00. Sprinter states its rates are total per passenger “including all ancillary fees, charges and applicable government fees & taxes”.

The cost the ferry fare doesn’t include

The ferry terminals are not at the international airport, and both operators sell the transfer separately — about 25 minutes, by San Pedro Belize Express’s own account. San Pedro Belize Express charges USD 25.00 for the first person and USD 10.00 for each additional. Caribbean Sprinter charges $15 USD per person.

Our arithmetic from those published figures, one way, airport to San Pedro, adult passengers:

Sprinter’s totals span a range because its ferry fare changes with the sailing. At two adults that range straddles the answer: Sprinter is cheaper on the 10:30 (US$101.00) and the 13:30 (US$102.00), identical on the 08:00 and 15:00 (US$103.00), and dearer on the 16:30 and 17:40 (US$104.00).

The transfers alone do not point one way either. Sprinter’s is cheaper at one and two passengers, the two tie at three (US$45.00), and Belize Express’s is cheaper at four (US$55.00 against US$60.00).

Tropic Air is the dearest at every party size in this table, and it is the only one of the three that needs no transfer at all: the fare is airport to island.

The Saturday fare

Tropic Air’s flexible-date strip showed USD 33.88 for BZE to San Pedro on Saturday 19 September 2026 and on Sunday 13 September, and USD 33.00 for San Pedro to BZE on that Saturday — against USD 110.00 Monday to Friday.

Two things to keep straight about that number. The strip is a “From USD” figure, so it is the lowest fare offered on the date rather than the price of every departure. And the booking engine displays no fare class or condition behind it, so we cannot tell you whether it is a promotional bucket, a resident fare or an ordinary weekend price. On those two dates it undercuts even the ferry fare on its own — USD 33.88 against USD 34.00 — before the airport transfer is counted.

The airline’s three different headline numbers

The same airline advertises this route in three places, and they do not agree:

We are deliberately not printing the widget’s number. It carries its own disclaimer — “Fares displayed have been collected within the last 48hrs and may no longer be available at time of booking” — and it labels a round trip at less than half the one-way fare the live booking engine returned on the same day, which cannot be reconciled. A figure we would have to surround with a warning is a figure that travels without the warning attached, so it stays off the page. Use the engine’s numbers above; they are the ones you can actually book.

How long each takes

San Pedro Belize Express’s booking engine shows “1h, 30m” on every sailing in both directions — an 8:00 AM departure arriving 9:30 AM — and its own San Pedro page repeats it as “just a short 1 hour 30 minute ride from Belize City”. Caribbean Sprinter’s booking results page states that “The sailing duration for Belize City to San Pedro is approximately 75 minutes.” These are two operators describing their own boats, not a contradiction: Sprinter’s is the faster of the two by about 15 minutes.

If you have an onward flight

Tropic Air publishes its own advice on the San Pedro to BZE results page, verbatim: “If you are traveling onward with another carrier from the Belize International Airport (BZE) we suggest you allow three (3) hours for your connection. Tropic Air will not be responsible for missed connections.”

Chartering a boat instead

Belize Private Express Water Taxi runs from the international airport straight to San Pedro for $100.00 US per person one way, minimum 6 passengers, or $150.00 US per person round trip, minimum 8 passengers, in 60 to 70 minutes. Departures run in hourly windows from 9AM–10AM through 6PM–7PM.

At its own six-passenger minimum that is US$600 one way for the group — against US$660 for six Tropic Air seats, and US$279 for six people on San Pedro Belize Express including its airport transfer.

Maya Island Air: the airline we could not price

Maya Island Air states it operates “11 daily flights from Belize City and 3 from Corozal to San Pedro”. Its San Pedro page does not say whether “Belize City” means the international airport (BZE) or the municipal airstrip (TZA) — which is the single most useful thing it could have said, because a cross-city transfer separates them: Tropic Air’s own airport pages put the international airport 10 miles (16 km) outside Belize City at Ladyville, and the municipal airstrip about 1 mile (1.5 km) from downtown.

Its schedule page answers that only indirectly, and it answers it in pictures: the airline publishes its whole network as nine timetable graphics. The one we transcribed here is Belize City Municipal ↔ San Pedro: to San Pedro at 07:30, 08:30, 09:30, 11:30 AM, 12:30, 01:30, 02:30, 04:30 and 05:30 PM, and back at 07:00, 08:00, 09:00, 11:00 AM, 12:00, 01:00, 02:00, 04:00 and 05:00 PM. A separate international-airport (BZE) → San Pedro graphic on the same page runs 10:40 AM to 5:40 PM plus two evening departures marked “RESTRICTED FOR PASSENGERS ARRIVING VIA INTERNATIONAL CARRIERS” — transcribed on our 7-day Belize itinerary page.

All nine of those graphics are stale by the same amount. We requested every one on 26 August 2026 and each came back with a Last-Modified date of Wed, 08 Feb 2023. The airline publishes no dated timetable anywhere else and its booking engine returned HTTP 403 to our requests, so no Maya fare could be checked at all and no Maya departure time could be confirmed as current. Treat the whole set as the airline’s standing published document rather than as today’s service.

If you search for Ocean Ferry Belize, you will land on oceanferrybelize.com, which now serves a page titled “Maint – Caribbean Sprinter – Back Soon”. Its TLS certificate has expired, so browsers show a security warning before it loads. The operator trades as Caribbean Sprinter LTD and books at sprinter.bz; Direct Ferries records it as “Caribbean Sprinter, formally known as Ocean Ferry Belize.”

What the operators don’t publish

• What the USD 33.00 / 33.88 Saturday fares are. The engine shows no fare class, no conditions and no explanation.
• Any Maya Island Air fare, on any route. Its public site publishes no prices anywhere.
• Any Maya Island Air timetable a reader can date. It publishes nine schedule graphics covering both Belize City airports, and all nine carry a Last-Modified date of 8 February 2023. The site stamps no validity period on any of it.
• The child fare amount. The FAQ says ages 4 to 10 pay “a children’s rate” and never states what it is.
• An ordinary taxi fare from BZE to the water taxi terminal, as distinct from the operator’s own shared shuttle.

What we did not check

Separate from the list above, because these are our limits and not the operators':

• Round-trip fares on any of the three. We exercised every engine one way only, so we cannot tell you whether a return is discounted.
• Maya Island Air’s fares. Its booking engine returned HTTP 403 to our requests. That is our route in failing, not the airline declining to publish; what its engine returns to an ordinary browser is something we cannot report either way.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the booking systems, timetables and official sources named below on the date shown; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

We ran real one-way searches on all three operators’ own booking systems on 26 August 2026, priced for one adult travelling 16 September 2026. Tropic Air’s fares, flight times, departure lists, connection notice and the Saturday strip all come from its live booking engine. Its separate fare-deals widget shows a third, lower round-trip “from” figure that we read but do not reproduce, because it contradicts the bookable fare and carries a 48-hour staleness disclaimer. The water-taxi fares and durations come from the two operators’ live engines; San Pedro Belize Express’s departure times additionally come from its printed schedule, which matched the engine departure for departure.

The airport transfer prices come from San Pedro Belize Express’s FAQ and Caribbean Sprinter’s home page. The charter rates come from Belize Private Express Water Taxi’s own rate page. Maya Island Air’s flight counts and timetable come from its own pages; the 8 February 2023 date comes from the HTTP metadata of the schedule images themselves, requested individually — all nine returned the same date. The Ocean Ferry renaming comes from a live fetch of the retired domain plus Direct Ferries’ listing.

All the door-to-door arithmetic is ours, computed at every party size from one to four rather than at the endpoints, because the answer changes inside the range.
