Tipping in Belize and What Things Actually Cost

Verified live on 26 August 2026, on Belize businesses’ own rate pages, menus, FAQs and price lists.

Two answers, both checked that day. On tipping, the figure you can verify before you travel is the service charge your hotel adds: across nine Belize properties’ own rate pages, seven quote one and it runs from 6% to 12%, while the other two quote none at all. All nine state the same 9% hotel tax. On prices, every Belize restaurant menu we could read — all three of them — prints a bare “$” and never says whether it is Belize or US dollars. The only price listing we found that labels its currency is a bar’s happy-hour board.

Belize publishes its accommodation add-ons with unusual precision and its street prices with almost none: the service charge is printed on the rate page; the currency on the menu often is not.

The service charge your hotel adds

Every one of these nine properties states its tax and service terms in its own words on its own rate page, so they can be checked against a booking confirmation. Seven quote a service charge; two state a hotel tax and say nothing about a service charge at all — which is not the same as publishing a zero, and we have not turned it into one.

The tax is the constant; the service charge is the variable. Chaa Creek prints “Rates are not inclusive of 9% Hotel Tax & 12% Service Charge”; SunBreeze prints “Room Rates are in $USD and are subject to 9% Room Tax & 6% Service Charge”; Black Rock prints “Please add 9% Hotel tax” and nothing else; Iguana Reef prints “Rates are listed in US dollars and do not include the 9% accommodation tax” and nothing else.

Only one property in this research prints the resulting total. Cahal Pech Village Resort, on the hillside above San Ignacio, publishes a standard cabana at $109.00 + $9.81 tax + $10.90 service = $129.71, with the same line-by-line arithmetic on every category: Deluxe Cabana $139.00 → $165.41, Superior Suite $149.00 → $177.31, Yaxha Family Cabana $165.00 → $196.35, Suites $169.00 → $201.11, additional person aged 10 or over $15.00 → $17.85. Its printed validity note: “Rates are valid from now through Nov 30th, 2026, and are subject to 9% hotel tax and 10% service charge.” Those figures come from the property’s own accommodation rate page, linked below, and they are the same block quoted on our San Ignacio page.

That breakdown also settles how the arithmetic works. 9% of $109.00 is $9.81 and 10% of $109.00 is $10.90 — both taken on the room rate, not stacked on each other. Compounding them instead would give $130.69, which is not the total the resort prints. Every uplift computed anywhere on this site uses that base-additive method for that reason.

The businesses in this research publish no tipping guideline for restaurants, tours or taxis. The hotel service charge is the only gratuity-type charge any of them prints.

The currency question, before any price below

A Belize hotel’s own currency guide states the peg plainly: “It has been pegged to the U.S. Dollar at a fixed exchange rate of 2:1 since 1978. This means that 1 USD is always equivalent to 2 BZD.” One correction to that quote before using it: the hotel’s date is wrong — the Central Bank of Belize dates the 2:1 peg to 11 May 1976, as our currency page documents from the bank itself. The rate is right, the year is not. The same guide adds: “Prices in Belize are typically listed in Belize Dollars, so it’s important to confirm whether a quoted price is in BZD or USD to avoid overpaying,” and recommends asking “Is that in Belize or U.S.?”

That is not a general caution, and the peg itself is the easy half. It is why several of the figures below cannot be converted: the businesses printing them do not say which dollar they mean. Where a source labels its currency, we say so. Where it does not, we quote it exactly as printed and derive nothing from it.

What a meal costs — as printed

Old Belize, Belize City (currency not labelled on the menu): Fry Jacks $5.00; Johnny Cakes $6.50; Belizean Eggs $7.00; Garnaches $8.50; Stew Chicken with Rice and Beans $12.00; Tamales $14.00; Hudut $15.00; Cochinita Pibil $16.00; Rice and Beans with Stew Fish $18.00; Grilled Lobster $22.00; Belikin Beer $4.00; Seaweed Shake $5.50; Sorrel Drink $3.50.

Guava Limb Restaurant & Cafe, San Ignacio (currency not labelled): Mozzarella Sticks $18.00; Handmade Nachos $20.00; Belizean Summer Rolls $24.00; Sticky Guava Wings $25.00; Sticky Asian Pork Belly $28.00; Roasted Eggplant Pasta $29.00; Grilled Chicken, Plantain & Avocado Burger $29.00; Spaghetti alla Carbonara $32.00; Pulled Beef Birria Tacos $35.00; Brazilian Fish Stew $45.00; Fire Grilled Big Bone Pork Chop $51.00. Beer and cocktails are listed without individual prices; Local Ceviche is priced only as “Seasonal”.

Elvi’s Kitchen, San Pedro (currency not labelled): cocktails $16–$20; lunch items $24–$35; dinner entrees $45–$55; vegan dishes $22–$30. The menu carries no beer section.

The one food or drink price here that states its currency is a bar listing on Caye Caulker: Barrier Reef Sports Bar advertises "$4 BZ Belikin Beer" and "$4 BZ Local Cocktails" at happy hour, 3 pm to 6 pm daily — about US$2 at the 2:1 peg. Old Belize prints its Belikin at $4.00 with no currency label.

Golf carts: three San Pedro operators, and no single day rate

On the same date, three Ambergris Caye operators published different figures for a four-seater day. We are not averaging them.

That first row is one business with two names, and it is worth saying so because both appear on this site: ambergriscayecartsbelize.com brands itself Ambergris Caye Carts and signs its copyright footer “Advanced Golf Cart Rentals”, and our Ambergris Caye and San Pedro and Caye Caulker pages use the second name. It is one rate card, not two operators. A fourth San Pedro operator, Mark’s Cart Rentals, prints US$40 a day for the same four-seater and is the only one of the four to state that 12.5% tax is added at payment, taking it to US$45.00.

Ambergris Caye Carts is the only operator found publishing both currencies side by side — its six-seater runs USD $60 / BZD $120 a day, USD $340 / BZD $680 a week and USD $1,330 / BZD $2,660 a month, which is the 2:1 peg shown in practice. Its printed inclusions: “Free Delivery and Pick Up”, “Vehicles are delivered with a full tank of Gas”, basic third-party insurance, a monthly bridge pass and “Free Car wash on rentals more than 48 hours” — alongside “Extra Charges may apply if cart is not returned on-time” and “No Refund for Unused Time”. Go San Pedro Rental prints “Bridge Toll Pass Included” and free delivery to San Pedro Town, the airport, the water taxi or your hotel.

One Love’s own article also quotes $45–$75 a day — but explicitly as a market-wide range across San Pedro operators, not as its own four-seater tariff, which is why that figure is not in the table above.

The extras are published by that one operator only, and as market-wide ranges rather than its own tariff: security deposit $200–$500, insurance or damage waiver $10–$15 per day, late return $10–$25 per hour, extra driver $5–$10 per day, cleaning fee $10–$25, and 12.5% GST. Hourly hire is listed at $10–$15 per hour, limited availability. That article carries no publication date, so unlike everything else here it cannot be tied to one.

Caye Caulker prices carts by the hour instead. Eco Beach Rides, on Chapoose Street, advertises golf carts “Starting at $15/hr!” and scooters “Starting at $10/hr!” — no daily or weekly rate is published, and the currency is not labelled. Buddy’s Golf Cart Rentals, listed as a Caye Caulker operator by the Belize Tourism Industry Association, publishes no rates at all.

Taxis, shuttles and transfers

• San Pedro airstrip into town: “The cost is about US$5.00”, per SunBreeze Suites’ own guest FAQ, which also states the airstrip is about a ten-minute walk from that property.
• A hotel-arranged transfer to the same airport: The Watermark Belize advertises “transfers to and from San Pedro Airport for just $22.50 US one way” — about four and a half times the street taxi fare quoted above, for the same airport on the same island.
• International airport to the Belize City water taxi terminal: San Pedro Belize Express’s FAQ states “One Way cost is USD$25.00 for the 1st person and USD$10 for each additional person.”
• Belize City to San Ignacio, private: San Ignacio Shuttles publishes "$140 USD for two people" and adds that “Larger groups benefit from lower per-person rates” without publishing a per-head table.

The one full published tariff. Cahal Pech Village Resort prints a complete point-to-point transfer rate card, all in USD, with 12.5% GST applying and “Kids below the age of 10 yrs - Free”:

Rows are quoted as the card labels them, and the card never uses the word “shared”: the $125.00 airport line carries no qualifier at all, and the $175.00 line is labelled “Private” — that is the only distinction it draws. One more printed condition is worth knowing before you compare it with a per-person fare: “Prices are based on a minimum of two persons, a single pays rate of two.” Selected rows; the card lists eighteen destinations, several of them outside this site’s scope.

A day on the water, priced two different ways

From San Pedro, Ambergris Caye: Amigos del Mar prices a Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley snorkel trip at $50.00 plus a $15USD cash marine entrance fee — the fee sits outside the price. Its local two-tank dive is $90 per person.

From Placencia: Seahorse Dive Shop prices a barrier reef snorkel day at $100 USD and a two-dive barrier reef day at $150 USD, both stated to include “All Diving and Snorkeling Equipment, Belizean-Style Lunch, Bottled Water, Beach towels, Marine Reserve Conservation fees, Hotel Transfer (some restrictions may apply), 12.5% Sales Tax.”

The difference worth carrying is not the headline number but the quoting convention: one shop puts the marine park fee outside its price, the other folds the conservation fees and the sales tax inside.

Fares rose in April 2026 — reported, not published by the carriers

This is the one figure here that does not come from the business charging it. The San Pedro Sun, 11 April 2026, reported San Pedro Belize Express’s Belize City–Ambergris Caye round trip rising “from BZ$81 to BZ$83”, a membership-card round trip at BZ$77, Caribbean Sprinter adding “A BZ$2 surcharge added to all routes”, and Thunderbolt (Ambergris Caye–Corozal) holding at BZ$65 one way. The same article reported domestic flight surcharges up “approximately BZ$6”, flights from the international airport up “approximately BZ$10”, and Tropic Air international routes up “approximately BZ$20”. The notice gives no implementation date and mentions no Belize City–Caye Caulker fare. Treat it as a newspaper report, because that is what it is. It also does not reconcile with what the same operator’s own ticketing system sells. BZ$83 round trip is US$41.50, or US$20.75 each way, against the USD 34.00 one way San Pedro Belize Express quoted for Belize City–San Pedro for travel on 16 September 2026. The article does not say which ticket type or sales channel its figure covers, so we print both and reconcile neither.

What the operators don’t publish

These are gaps in Belize businesses’ own published information, not ours.

• Both water taxi operators omit a static fare table from their own websites. belizewatertaxi.com shows a schedule image and no fares; belizewatertaxi.com/schedule-fares/ returns 404; oceanferrybelize.com could not be fetched at all because its TLS certificate has expired. Fares do exist inside both operators’ booking engines, and we priced them there for travel on 16 September 2026 — USD 29.00 and USD 34.00 on San Pedro Belize Express, and US$30.50–37.00 by departure on Caribbean Sprinter, all on our Belize City to Caye Caulker ferry and BZE airport to San Pedro pages. What no operator publishes is a fare you can read without running a dated search, which is why the newspaper report below is the only published fare figure.
• An official or regulated taxi tariff for Belize could not be sourced. The US$5 airstrip fare comes from a hotel FAQ, not a town council or transport authority. The commonly repeated BZ$50 / US$25 flat rate from the international airport into Belize City appears only in secondary travel write-ups, so we have deliberately not recorded it as a figure.
• Every Belize restaurant menu we found omits its currency. Four menus were fetched; only the Caye Caulker bar listing labelled its prices BZ. The two mobile carriers split the same way — Smart labels its prices BZD, Digi prints a bare “$” — on our Belize SIM cards and eSIMs page.
• Three restaurants publish menus as PDF downloads only, so the prices are not readable in the page text: The Bohemian (Placencia), The Placencia, and Blue Water Grill (San Pedro).
• No Belize supermarket publishes an online price list that could be fetched, so there are no grocery figures here.
• No marine-reserve authority figure for the entrance fee. It appears here only as a line item on one operator’s trip price, and we are not treating that as the reserve’s own published fee. The nearest thing to an authority is Hol Chan’s own press release of 27 July 2024 setting it at US$15, which reaches us second-hand through The San Pedro Sun because the reserve’s websites are offline — see our Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley page.
• No tipping guideline from any Belize restaurant, tour operator or taxi.
• No publication date on the golf cart fee breakdown, which is why its ranges are marked indicative rather than dated.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the booking systems, timetables and official sources named below on the date shown; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

On 26 August 2026 we read Belize businesses’ own published pages and recorded what they print. The service charges and the 9% hotel tax come from nine properties’ own rate pages, quoted verbatim. The tax-inclusive rack totals come from Cahal Pech’s own published rate table. Menu prices come from three restaurants’ own online menus and one bar’s happy-hour listing. Cart rates come from three operators’ own price pages, and the fee ranges from one operator’s own article about market costs. Taxi, shuttle and transfer prices come from a hotel FAQ, a hotel’s getting-here page, a ferry operator’s FAQ, a shuttle company’s home page and a resort’s transfer rate card. Tour prices come from two dive shops’ own trip pages. The peg and the currency convention come from a Belize hotel’s own currency guide. The April 2026 fare increases come from a local newspaper and are labelled as such.

Where sources disagree — the golf cart day rate — we print all three figures rather than choosing. Where a price carries no currency label, we quote it as printed and convert nothing.
