Belize Entry Requirements for US Citizens: Visa, Passport, Funds

On this page 5 sections

Verified on 7 November 2026 on Belize Immigration’s own visa pages (immigration.gov.bz), the Belize Tourism Board, the Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport operator, and the US State Department’s Belize page (read rendered in a browser).

US citizens do not need a visa to visit Belize. Belize Immigration’s country table lists the United States of America as “NO” under visa required, with a visa needed only “if stay in Belize is longer than” 180 days. Entry gives you 30 days: Immigration says anyone “staying longer that [sic] 30 days in Belize … will need to visit an Immigration Office to extend your stay”. You need a passport book — the State Department says “You can’t use a U.S. passport card to enter Belize by air or land” — plus a return or onward ticket and enough money for the stay, which the airport operator puts at US$60.00 per day.

What the sources agree on is short: no visa for a US citizen arriving by air or land, and a 30-day stay on entry. They differ on the ticket (the airport operator says a return ticket to the country of origin; the State Department accepts an onward or return ticket), and on passport validity, and that disagreement is still open (below).

The US$60.00-a-day figure is the airport operator’s list of what Immigration officials will require; we did not find it on immigration.gov.bz itself, and the State Department asks only for “sufficient funds to cover the cost of your stay” with no amount. For how far that money goes on the ground, our Belize trip cost page sets the Belize Tourism Board’s own visitor-spending figure against operator prices.

Belize Immigration is the authority on every rule on this page, and these rules can change by government decision; confirm with the Immigration Department before you rely on them.

Who to contact

Belize Immigration (immigration.gov.bz)

  • Headquarters, Belmopan: +(501) 822-3860
  • WhatsApp: +(501) 610-2143
  • Online contact form on its Contact Us page
  • Immigration’s page says: “We are currently working on updating our contact information for the immigration offices and stations throughout the country.” It publishes no office addresses or opening hours, so we give none.
  • The airport operator separately lists Immigration at the International Airport on +(501) 205-2214 and the Belize City office on +(501) 222-4620.

Embassy of Belize, Washington DC

  • 2535 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008-2826
  • Tel (202) 332-9636; consular appointments (202)-905-0920

The passport-validity conflict

Two Belizean sources give different figures, and we have not resolved it:

  • The Belize Tourism Board says a visa-exempt visitor’s passport must be valid for at least 30 days after the date of arrival, unless you are transiting to a third country that requires six months’ validity.
  • Belize Immigration’s Visa Requirements page says the passport “must be valid for more than 6 months”. That page is written for visa applicants, and US citizens are visa-exempt — but it is Immigration’s only published validity figure, and we found no Immigration page stating a separate rule for visa-exempt visitors.
  • The US State Department’s Belize page gives no validity period and no blank-page count at all.

Read the 30-day figure as the Tourism Board’s and the six-month figure as Immigration’s visa rule; if your passport falls between the two, the Immigration Department is the office that can settle it.

Other rules for US travellers

  • Arrival form. The State Department: “Upon arrival, you must present a completed immigration and customs form. You may fill out a physical form or submit online on the Belize immigration website in advance of your arrival.”
  • Cruise passengers. On a closed-loop cruise from and to the same US port, the State Department lists an original or certified government-issued birth certificate with a raised seal, plus government photo ID for those 16 or older. Our Belize City cruise port page covers the port itself.
  • Children travelling without both parents. The State Department says Belize Immigration officials are required to ask for proof of consent and identification from the non-travelling parent, plus the children’s birth certificates.
  • Staying longer than 30 days. That needs a Visitor’s Permit Extension from an Immigration Office; the fee and limits are on our Belize visa extension page.
  • Non-US citizens with US status. Immigration exempts visits of up to 30 days for holders of a valid multiple-entry US visa or a US Permanent Residence Card (and of a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa, or a valid multiple-entry Canadian visa or Canadian Permanent Residence Card). For the nationalities Immigration’s fee table groups as “all other nationals”, a visa costs BZ$200.00 single entry (valid 6 months) or BZ$300.00 multiple entry (valid 12 months), in Belize dollars, with effect from 1 May 2020; the same table prints higher amounts for a few named nationalities, and none of these fees applies to US citizens.

What we could not establish

  • Passport validity at Immigration for visa-exempt visitors. Only the Tourism Board figure and the visa-applicant figure exist on the pages we read (see the conflict above).
  • The source of the US$60.00-a-day rule. It appears on the airport operator’s page; we did not find it on immigration.gov.bz.
  • Blank passport pages, vaccinations and yellow fever. None of the pages we read states a rule.
  • A visitor-rules page at the Embassy. The Embassy of Belize’s US site has no page on visa-exempt visitors, and the Government of Belize portal, belize.gov.bz, returned an error on 7 November 2026.

How we researched this

On 7 November 2026 we read Belize Immigration’s Visa Who Qualify, Visa Requirements, Visa Fees and Contact Us pages; the Belize Tourism Board’s Visas and Immigration page; the airport operator’s Passenger Info page; the Embassy of Belize’s consular pages; and the US State Department’s Belize entry-requirements section, rendered in a browser. The State Department is a US government source, not a Belizean one, and is labelled that way throughout.
