Belize Domestic Flights: What Tropic Air and Maya Island Air Actually Publish

Verified on 26 August 2026, against both airlines’ own destination, baggage and fare pages.

Two airlines fly Belize’s domestic network: Tropic Air and Maya Island Air. They do not publish the same things. Maya Island Air publishes a checked-bag weight limit — 50 lbs. Tropic Air publishes none: its baggage policy sets size limits only, and states that all baggage is subject to aircraft weight, balance and cargo-space limitations. Neither airline publishes a usable fare on its route or destination pages — Maya Island Air publishes none at all, and the only figure on Tropic Air’s route pages is a “From USD $” widget we are not quoting, for reasons below — and neither carrier puts a flight duration on a single route page. Six durations do exist; every one of them sits somewhere else, on a cruise-ship page, a tour page, two Maya destination pages, or inside a booking engine.

That is the shape of the whole comparison. The two networks overlap on most of the map, but each carrier is transparent about a different half of the trip — one publishes a weight limit, the other publishes a ladder of fare classes that decides how many bags you get, with no prices attached to them. Tropic Air publishes no timetable at all outside its booking engine; Maya Island Air’s entire published timetable is nine images last modified in February 2023.

Where each airline flies

The two networks are not identical. Caye Chapel and Savannah appear on Maya Island Air’s destination list and not on Tropic Air’s. Both airlines list two separate Belize City airports — the Municipal field and the international airport — which Tropic Air distinguishes by code as TZA and BZE. Maya Island Air prints no IATA codes anywhere on its site; the destinations above are the words it uses.

Baggage: the one number only Maya Island Air publishes

Two details in that table do the most work. Tropic Air’s two personal items are measured together, not each. And Tropic Air’s own maximum checked-bag dimensions add up to 61.5 linear inches — half an inch inside the 62-inch threshold at which it warns a bag may not be accepted.

What third-party pages claim, and why we are not repeating it

We searched Tropic Air’s full published baggage policy — both the summary and the ten-section detailed policy — for “lbs”, “pounds”, “kg” and “kilograms” on 26 August 2026. Zero matches. Tropic Air sets no checked-bag weight.

Two figures circulate in third-party writing anyway, and they contradict both the airline and each other. TripAdvisor forum posts dated 2011 give 35 lbs; a third-party travel aggregator gives 22 kg for domestic flights. Those two are far apart: on our arithmetic 22 kg converts to 48.5 lbs, which is 13.5 lbs — 39% — more than the 35 lb figure. The conversion, the subtraction and the percentage are ours; the 35 lbs and the 22 kg are the third parties’. Both are absent from the airline’s current policy, which instead directs baggage questions to [email protected]. Both figures come from elsewhere rather than from Tropic Air, so we would plan a bag around neither — we are quoting them to show how far apart the internet’s two answers are, not offering either as the limit.

Tropic Air’s fare classes decide how many bags you get

Tropic Air runs two separate fare ladders — one for itineraries that touch the international airport (BZE), another for domestic hops that do not.

All fare classes include two personal items. LITE carries no checked bag at all — the cheapest fare on a search result will not take a suitcase.

An older set of fare-class names — “Premium, Everyday, Getaway & Flash” — still circulates in third-party writing, including on TripAdvisor. It does not match Tropic Air’s own fares page as we fetched it on 26 August 2026, which uses the names above. We cannot reconcile the two lists and are not going to pick one; the names above are the ones the airline publishes today.

Fares: what neither airline publishes

Maya Island Air publishes no route fares at all — fares appear only inside its booking engine after a date search. Its site does carry a standing notice that “prices are displayed in USD dollars”, which matters in a country where government pricing is quoted in Belize dollars using the same “$” symbol.

Tropic Air’s route pages show a “From USD $” widget. We are not quoting it. The figure it displays is internally inconsistent with the airline’s own booking engine, and it comes with no fare breakdown, so there is no way to tell whether it includes Belize’s domestic taxes and fees.

What one route’s fares actually look like was established not here but on our BZE airport to San Pedro page, which exercised Tropic Air’s live booking engine (booking.tropicair.com) on 26 August 2026 for mid-September travel dates: USD 110 each way Monday to Friday, and USD 33.00–33.88 each way on Saturday 19 September 2026 — with the outbound leg also showing USD 33.88 on Sunday 13 September. That is one route, searched once, on one carrier — not a fare table — but it is what the airline’s own engine returned, and it brackets the route-page widget figure on both sides.

Two published numbers worth planning around

Three hours, if you are connecting internationally. Tropic Air states that passengers connecting to another airline at Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) who have purchased additional baggage are strongly encouraged to allow a minimum connection time of three (3) hours, and that excess baggage may travel on a later flight. The warning appears twice in its policy.

Twenty-four hours, if you are booking Maya Island Air. Its standing site notice reads: “Reservations are recommended to be made at minimum, 24 hours prior to intended flight date and time.”

Mobility aids and medical devices on Tropic Air

Tropic Air accepts wheelchairs, mobility aids and medically necessary devices free of charge, and they do not count toward the baggage allowance. Canes, walkers and CPAP machines may be carried on board if cabin space permits, and are otherwise checked at no additional charge. The airline adds one caveat specific to its aircraft: some powered wheelchairs may not be accommodated due to aircraft size. Everything in this section is Tropic Air’s published rule and applies to Tropic Air — it is not a Belize domestic standard, and we did not extend it to the other carrier.

What the operators don’t publish

These are gaps in the airlines’ own published information, not ours:

• Any checked-baggage weight limit from Tropic Air. Size limits only.
• Any Tropic Air excess or overweight baggage fee amount. The policy says fees apply and that additional bags may be purchased, without naming a price.
• Maya Island Air’s airport codes, on its own site — destinations are named in words. Its own IATA airline code is likewise not published there.
• Maya Island Air route fares. No fare pages exist on the site; fares appear only inside the booking engine.
• A block time on any route page, from either carrier. Six durations exist, but not one of them is on a route page. Tropic Air puts approximately 20 minutes Belize City Municipal–San Pedro and 15 minutes Municipal–Caye Caulker on its cruise-ship page and 1 hour on its Blue Hole tour page, and its booking engine returned 13 minutes for BZE–San Pedro. Maya Island Air is the only carrier that puts durations on destination pages: 15 minutes to Caye Caulker and “only a forty minute flight” to Placencia. Against that last one, Tropic Air’s booking engine returned 25 minutes nonstop and 30 minutes via Dangriga on the same city pair — a figure recorded by our Placencia research, not established here.
• A dated timetable from either carrier. Tropic Air publishes no schedule outside its booking engine. Maya Island Air publishes nine timetable graphics on one page — covering both Belize City airports — but every one of the nine is served with a Last-Modified date of 8 February 2023, and nothing on the site states a validity period, so the frequencies they show cannot be confirmed as current.
• Whether the fare figures on Tropic Air’s route pages include Belize’s domestic taxes and fees. The widget gives a “From USD $” number with no breakdown.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the booking systems, timetables and official sources named below on the date shown; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

On 26 August 2026 we read Tropic Air’s published baggage policy and fare-comparison table, and Maya Island Air’s home page, baggage page and standing site notices, and transcribed the figures above from those pages. The absence of a Tropic Air weight limit was established by full-text searching the fetched baggage policy for four terms. The destination lists come from each airline’s own navigation and destination list. Two numbers on this page are imports, not this page’s own findings, and both are labelled where they appear. The BZE–San Pedro fare range was recorded by our BZE-to-San-Pedro research from a live search on Tropic Air’s booking engine run 26 August 2026; the 25-to-30-minute Tropic Air block time for BZE–Placencia was recorded by our Placencia research from the same engine on the same date. The 35 lb and 22 kg baggage figures come from third-party pages and are labelled as such, and the pounds-to-kilograms conversion and the percentage gap between them are our own arithmetic, labelled in place.

Where the two airlines publish different things, we have said which one publishes what rather than blending them into a single “Belize domestic flights” rule.

Figures on this page labelled our arithmetic are calculated by us from the sourced inputs cited below — comparisons, percentages, multiples, differences, per-night and per-person conversions, running totals and currency conversions. Every other figure is reproduced as its named source published it. Where an operator or authority publishes a per-person or per-night rate directly, that is their figure and it is attributed to them at the point it appears.
