Belize City to San Ignacio: Bus Fare, Shuttle Prices, and Why They Are Not the Same Trip

Verified on 26 August 2026 on five shuttle operators’ own pages. The bus fare below could not be verified on any operator or government source — the caveat sits with the number.

A private shuttle from Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) to San Ignacio is US$75 per person for two, falling to US$40 per person at seven or more, on the only complete rate card we found published — Cayo Inland Expeditions’. A second operator prices the same airport run at US$180 for two. The public bus along the same corridor is quoted at BZ$9.00 (about US$4.50) for about 2 hours, but that figure comes from an independent route guide dated 16 January 2020, and the bus leaves from downtown Belize City, not the airport.

These are not two prices for one journey. One is a private car from the airport door to your accommodation; the other is a stopping bus from a downtown terminal, whose fare no bus company and no government body publishes anywhere.

Shuttle prices from the airport

Cayo Inland Expeditions & Tours publishes a full tier card. The totals are our arithmetic on it:

The tiers are reproduced as the operator prints them, and they overlap — “3+” and “4+” both cover a party of four — so we have read them as a ladder taking the lowest applicable rate. The service is fully private door-to-door with a two-person minimum, which means one traveller alone pays the two-person price: US$150. The operator states these prices include tax.

Three other operators corroborate the top of that range and one does not publish rates at all:

• Pacz Tours: US$180 one way for two guests, plus US$20 for each extra person, quoted for pickup at the international airport or the Belize City water taxi terminal. That is the second airport-door figure on this page, and it sits US$30 above Cayo Inland’s US$150 for the same party size and the same start point.
• San Ignacio Shuttles: “Our shuttle service from Belize City to San Ignacio typically costs $140 USD for two people” — US$70 per person. Note where that quote starts: Belize City, not the airport. So we are not treating it as a check on Cayo Inland’s US$75, which prices the airport. Two prices, two different journeys — the exact distinction this page is about, and it applies to us too. Where our what a Belize trip costs and 7-day itinerary pages quote a range for this leg, that is the range they are drawing on, and they label the origins the same way.
• Ron’s Belize Private Shuttle: “All rates are in U.S Dollars per person”, single riders pay the full price of a group of two, and pickups or drop-offs outside San Ignacio add US$10 to US$50 per group.
• BZ Shuttle Service advertises “rates start as low as $45 US” in marketing copy, with no group size attached and no rate card anywhere on the site.

Read as headline numbers those four look like a conflict — US$90, US$75, US$70 and US$45 a head. They are mostly describing different party sizes, different pickup points and different service levels, but only Cayo Inland publishes enough detail to know which. From the airport, for two people, the two figures that are strictly comparable are Cayo Inland’s US$150 and Pacz Tours’ US$180 — a real US$30 spread on the same journey. We are not collapsing any of them into a single figure.

Pickup is directly outside the airport terminal, with drop-off at San Ignacio accommodation and, in San Ignacio Shuttles’ words, “flexible timing based on your arrival” rather than a fixed schedule.

The bus

Everything in this table rests on one independent source, the Belize Bus and Travel Guide, on a page dated 16 January 2020:

Intermediate stops on the same westbound run: the Belize Zoo (29 miles), about 45 minutes and BZ$4.00; Belmopan (50 miles), about 1.5 hours and BZ$6.00; Benque Viejo del Carmen, about BZ$10.00. The corridor is described as the Western Zone, Belize City to Benque Viejo del Carmen, 130 km / 81 miles.

A second secondary figure exists and it is more than twice this one. Pacz Tours publishes a comparison table on the page selling its own transfer, and puts the bus at "~$10" per person and 3–4 hours — against BZ$9.00 (about US$4.50) and about 2 hours here. Both are secondary, they disagree by 2.2× on fare and by roughly two hours on time, and no operator or government source exists to break the tie. Why we are flagging rather than asserting that BZ$9.00. The source is a long-running independent guide, not an operator and not a tariff. Its page is dated 16 January 2020, and neighbouring route notes on it reference service changes from 2013. Six companies are licensed on this corridor — BBOC, D and E, Guerra’s Bus Service, Middleton’s, Shaw Bus Service and Westline — and none of them publishes a website with fares. There is no single national operator. “Novelo’s” is the old name of the Belize City terminal rather than a current bus company, which is worth saying because much travel writing still calls the terminal by that name. Treat BZ$9.00 as indicative.

The comparison, and the leg nobody prices

The bus and the shuttle start in different places. Every bus source we found references the downtown Belize City terminal; the shuttle quotes are all from Philip Goldson International Airport. The sources we fetched neither confirm nor deny that buses serve the airport at all.

So the honest comparison carries a hole in it, and we are going to leave the hole visible rather than fill it:

The bus fares are BZ$9.00 per person converted at the fixed 2:1 peg, and they carry the 2020 caveat above. Even ignoring the missing transfer, the ratio between the two narrows steeply at first and then stops narrowing: the shuttle costs roughly 33 times the bus fare for one traveller, 11 times at four, and exactly 10 times at both five and six — the operator’s US$45 tier covers 5–6, so the sixth passenger does not change the ratio — before easing to about 9 times at seven. A traveller landing at BZE and choosing the bus still has to reach the downtown terminal, and we could not price that leg from any source.

How long it takes — two figures on each side

Rome2Rio is an aggregator rather than an operator, so neither bus figure is authoritative; an express versus regular stopping pattern would plausibly explain the gap. On the shuttle side the two figures belong to two different companies. Use the one for the operator you book.

What the operators don’t publish

• Any Government of Belize bus tariff for the Western Highway. We looked; the BZ$9.00 rests on one independent guide.
• A 2025 or 2026 bus fare confirmed by a bus company. None of the six licensed operators publishes a website carrying fares.
• A fixed bus timetable with named departure times. Service is described only as “about every half hour” between 5:00 am and 9:30 pm.
• Shared shuttle rates, as opposed to private ones, from BZ Shuttle Service and William Shuttle Service. Both quote by WhatsApp or phone only; we fetched both pages and neither carries a figure.
• Whether buses serve Philip Goldson International Airport at all. No source we fetched confirms it or rules it out.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the booking systems, timetables and official sources named below on the date shown; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

We read six shuttle operators’ own pages on 26 August 2026: Cayo Inland Expeditions’ full tier card, Pacz Tours’ two-person transfer price, San Ignacio Shuttles’ two-person quote and airport-pickup terms, Ron’s Belize Private Shuttle’s rate terms, and BZ Shuttle Service’s and William Shuttle Service’s route pages, which carry no rate card between them. Where an operator names its pickup point we say so against the price, because on this corridor the pickup point is most of the difference.

Every bus fare, distance, frequency and payment detail on this page comes from a single independent source — the Belize Bus and Travel Guide, on a page dated 16 January 2020 — and we say so beside the numbers rather than in a footnote, because no operator or government source publishes an alternative to check it against. The second bus journey time comes from Rome2Rio, an aggregator.

The group totals, the currency conversions at the fixed 2:1 peg and the shuttle-to-bus ratios are our arithmetic, computed at every party size from one to seven.
