What a Belize Car Rental Actually Costs: Rates, the Compulsory Insurance, Deposits and Fuel

Verified live on 24 September 2026, on the operators’ own websites and one operator’s own booking engine, priced for pickup at the international airport on Wednesday 21 October 2026 and return there on Saturday 24 October 2026.

The cheapest car on the two Belize rental rate cards we could find is US$39 a day. Booked for three days at the airport it comes to US$158.29 — US$52.76 a day, 35.3 per cent above the headline — and that total still contains no collision cover. Adding the minimum collision cover the same operator requires on a three-day rental takes it to at least US$247.99, and its all-in Full Coverage Protection costs US$59.95 a day, which over three days is more than the car.

The daily rate is the smallest moving part in a Belize rental. What varies between companies is not the headline — the two operators that publish one start US$6 apart — but the deposit they freeze, whether they will let you decline their insurance at all, and how much that insurance costs when they will not.

The published daily rates

The international airport lists fifteen car-rental companies. We reached and read five of their websites, and two of those five put a price on it. These are their own rate cards, read on 24 September 2026.

AQ’s US$39 tier is four vehicles — a Chevy Equinox midsize SUV, a Chevy Sonic economy car, a Kia Soul sub-compact SUV and a Chrysler Sebring 200 sedan, all four marked “PAVED ROADS ONLY”, three of them badged 2014–2017 and the fourth simply “OLDER MODEL”. Its rate card clusters heavily in the middle: ten vehicles at US$79 and nine at US$89. Car-One’s cheapest is a 2014–2016 Jeep Patriot 2WD at $45.00US/day and its dearest a 12- or 15-seat Ford Transit at $120.00US/day; every listing says unlimited mileage and automatic transmission.

Car-One will not rent for less than three days — “3 Days Minimum Reservation”, printed under its rate card — so its floor in money is US$135.00 before anything else is added. It also advertises a “10% Internet Special … (Valid from May 01 – October 31, 2026)” with the coupon code I-Book.

One caution before you use AQ’s number. Its home page title says “$39 Per Day Special”; its fleet and terms pages say “CHEAPEST CAR RENTAL US37 Per day” and its footer “Cheapest Car Rental $37 per DAY”. All three were live on the same day. The bookable floor is US$39 — no US$37 vehicle exists on its rate card, or among the 103 vehicles its booking engine offered us on 24 September 2026. We are not resolving which figure the operator intends.

What US$39 a day becomes at the checkout

We ran that booking on 24 September 2026. Pickup at Phillip Goldson International Airport, 21 October 2026 at 10:00; return to the same place on 24 October at 10:00; three days. The engine offered 103 vehicles — 92 cars, SUVs, pickups and vans and 11 motorbikes — with three-day totals from USD 158.29 to USD 428.29 — US$52.76 to US$142.76 a day, our division. The same search run on 9 September 2026, for 23 to 26 September, returned the same range and the same fourteen distinct totals.

Every card carried the same “What is Included?” panel: General Sales Tax (GST) 12.50 %, Service Fee USD 2.95, Passenger Liability USD 4.95. The two fees are per day. That is enough to rebuild the total exactly:

That is our arithmetic, and it reproduces the operator’s own displayed figure to the cent — and on 24 September 2026 the engine’s options step printed the same lines itself: base rate USD 117.00, service fee USD 8.85, passenger liability USD 14.85, GST USD 17.59, estimated total USD 158.29. The same formula reproduces every one of the fourteen distinct three-day totals the engine returned — US$55 a day gives US$212.29, US$89 gives US$327.04, and US$119 gives the US$428.29 at the top of the range — so it is the operator’s actual pricing rule, not a coincidence on one car.

Collision cover is not in that total. It is the next step.

The insurance menu, priced per day

This is the part only one of the five operators’ sites we could read prints numbers for. AQ Belize’s booking engine lists them at the options step:

Three days of Full Coverage Protection is US$179.85 — US$21.56 more than the US$158.29 AQ’s cheapest car itself costs over the same three days. That is our arithmetic on two figures the same operator displayed on the same day, and it is conservative in the insurance’s favour: the car total already includes GST and the engine does not show, at that step, whether GST is then added to the coverage.

You cannot always decline it. AQ states the rule three times, in the engine and in its terms: “full coverage insurance is mandatory for all 1-2 day rentals, regardless of payment method”; “For rentals paid with a debit card or cash, CDW insurance is required”; and “For credit card payments, CDW may only be declined on rentals for 4 days and more.” For a three-day credit-card rental its terms set CDW and Deductible Protection as the minimum, which is US$89.70 over three days — taking that US$39-a-day car to at least US$247.99, or about US$82.66 a day, 2.1 times the advertised rate. All of that is our arithmetic on the operator’s own daily figures, and “at least” is doing real work: the engine does not show whether GST is added on top of the coverage.

The deductible is what the cover buys down. With CDW you are still liable for the first US$1,000; Deductible Protection at US$9.95 a day removes it. Car-One publishes the same US$1,000.00 deductible and states it applies “no matter the extent of damages or whether fault is accepted or not” — and publishes no price for the cover. Budget Belize takes a different shape again: Loss Damage Waiver is mandatory for anyone paying with a Visa card, while American Express, Mastercard and Discover holders may take a Partial Damage Waiver “which includes a $750USD non-waiveable excess”. Its price for either is “varies by car group confirmed”.

Deposits, and what you must pay with

Declining the cover is not free even where it is allowed: at both AQ and Car-One it triggers the deposit and full liability. Car-One puts it bluntly — “Declining Collision Insurance makes customers 100% responsible and declining our collision insurance you must put a Security Deposit of US$1,000.00.”

Age rules, as the operators publish them

These are rental conditions, and the four operators that publish them do not agree.

Crystal is worth reading twice, because the company publishes two different answers at once. Its current site sets the A Class band at 21 to 80 and the B Class band at 25 to 70. Its older site — still served in full, and still reachable — says “All drivers must be over the age of 25 yrs. Maximum rental age limit is 75 yrs.” Three different maximum ages, 70, 75 and 80, all live on 9 and again on 24 September 2026 from the same company. If you are near either end of a band, the operator’s answer depends on which of its pages you land on, which is a good reason to get it in writing before you fly.

The extras that are actually priced

Crystal publishes two per-day extras: additional driver US$3.95 per day and child seat US$6.95 per day — the only child-seat price on the five sites we read; Dollar Belize says child seats are “available upon request for a fee” without stating it — with ice chests free subject to availability, and no additional-driver charge for a spouse at the same address. Over three days that is US$11.85 and US$20.85 — our arithmetic. AQ’s additional driver is US$4.95 a day.

Crystal is also the only one of the five that publishes a one-way and delivery price list:

Those are the operator’s own figures, and it states “Prices are for one-way delivery. Return pickups may incur an additional fee.” Out-district collection and delivery run 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM only. There is a Punta Gorda pick-up price and no Punta Gorda delivery price. Moving the car between Crystal’s own two locations carries no published charge at all: “you can conveniently pick up or return your rental at either our Main Office or the Airport Office”, plus free pick-up and drop-off anywhere within Belize City and Ladyville. Getting to San Ignacio without a car — the same journey Crystal charges US$125.00 to deliver into — is priced on our Belize City to San Ignacio page.

AQ’s equivalent is a drop-off fee of “US$200 and up” for returning the car to its sister company in Placencia; Car-One quotes any non-standard drop-off “at the time of booking or request” and publishes no figure. Car-One’s home page also offers free pick-up and drop-off at the water taxi, which is the same Belize City terminal our BZE airport to Caye Caulker page prices the transfers into. None of the five publishes an airport surcharge, and none states that there isn’t one.

The charges for getting it wrong

Budget Belize gives a sixty-minute grace period on returns “after such time, an hourly rate will be charged” and never says what the hourly rate is. Crystal charges a no-show fee equal to one day’s rental if you neither turn up nor cancel, and asks 24 hours’ notice for an early return or it charges an extra day.

Fuel: the government’s number, and the operator’s

The Statistical Institute of Belize publishes average pump prices in its monthly Consumer Price Index release. The most recent one on 24 September 2026 still covers July 2026 and was published on 26 August 2026; no August release was on the SIB’s site when we checked:

Those are Belize dollars, as the table’s own heading states, converted here at the fixed rate our Belize currency and ATMs page sources from the Central Bank. Diesel is the one that moved: up BZ$2.98 a gallon in a year, and the release attributes a 12.4 per cent rise in the whole Transport category to fuel.

Set that against what a rental company tells you. Crystal’s FAQ answers “What is the fuel cost in Belize?” with “Fuel prices fluctuates between $5.50 to $7 USD per gallon” — a band that contains regular gasoline and sits below both premium and diesel on the government’s own July figures. The operator’s band carries no date; the government’s figure does. We are not averaging them.

Two things about the government number. It is a national monthly average, not the price on the pump on the day you fill up. And inside the same release the narrative says regular gasoline was “$11.89 in July of last year” while Table 1 says $11.86 — BZ$13.77 minus BZ$11.86 is exactly the $1.91 rise the narrative itself quotes, so the table is the self-consistent half, and that is the figure in our table above. The narrative slips twice: it also puts premium gasoline’s rise at $2.33 where its own table pair, BZ$13.22 to BZ$15.54, gives $2.32.

If you want a more current official price than a July average, we could not find one. The Government of Belize Press Office used to announce every pump-price change; the most recent such announcement we could find on it is dated 31 March 2022, on a site whose five newest posts on 24 September 2026 were dated 18 to 24 September 2026. Its 2026 posts that mention fuel are an April decision to keep bus fares unchanged and a 4 September Cabinet brief extending “a $2-per-gallon fuel subsidy for the Belize Bus Association”; neither states a pump price. The channel is alive; the pump-price announcements stopped.

Which vehicle you need, per the operators

Every operator that discusses it says the same thing in different words: the highways are fine and the attractions are not. AQ: “Most major roads are paved. 2WD high-clearance recommended for many attractions; 4WD strongly recommended for Mountain Pine Ridge and terrain roads.” Car-One: “Road from Belize City to Placencia is all paved, but most tourist attractions requires a 2WD High Clearance Vehicle”, with a heavy-duty 4×4 required beyond the Douglas Silva checkpoint to Caracol. Dollar Belize permits no off-road use at all “with the exception of unpaved government maintained roads leading to the resorts and official attractions.”

That matters to the bill, because it decides which rate tier applies: every vehicle in AQ’s US$39 tier is marked “PAVED ROADS ONLY” on its own rate card, so the cheapest number on this page is not a number you can take to Mountain Pine Ridge. The Cayo District sites most of those warnings point at are the reason people rent in the first place.

On speed limits the operators agree with each other: 55 mph / 90 km/h on the highway, with AQ and Car-One both putting villages at 15–25 mph and Crystal putting cities and towns at 25 mph (40 km/h).

Whether you can take it out of the country

Five operators, three different answers, all published on the same day:

• AQ Belize allows Tikal in Guatemala and Chetumal in Mexico, and charges US$49 for the authorisation letter it requires 48 hours ahead, plus a US$1000 security deposit for either.
• Crystal Auto Rental “allows it’s vehicles to go to Tikal and Flores, Peten only.”
• Car-One: “ALL vehicles must remain within the country of Belize… NOT ALLOWED in Chetumal Quintana-Roo (Mexico) or Flores Peten/ Tikal (Guatemala).”
• Budget Belize: “All vehicles must remain within Belize. You may not exit the country with a rental car.”
• Dollar Belize: “Our vehicles are not permitted across the borders of Belize into either Guatemala or Mexico including the border towns of Melchor de Mencos and Chetumal.”

What the rental companies don’t publish

These are gaps in their own information, and on this topic they are the story. Of the fifteen companies the airport lists, the airport gives phone numbers and email addresses and not one website. We derived each site from the email domain it published, reached five of them, and read them in full:

• Crystal Auto Rental publishes no daily rate, on either of its two live websites.
• Dollar Belize publishes no daily rate, no deposit amount and no insurance price — ten vehicles listed across nine class codes, and “the best available rates”. The airport lists that company’s email under the name “Hertz/Safari Belize”; the site it leads to is branded Dollar Belize throughout.
• Budget Belize publishes no daily rate on its own site — it hands the search to a third-party booking host — and no price for LDW or PDW.
• Car-One publishes rates and no price for any coverage.
• Crystal and Budget both require a credit-card deposit and neither says how much.
• Budget’s hourly late-return rate is referred to and never stated.
• Of the remaining ten operators, one domain — discountcarrentalbelize.com, from the email the airport still lists — now redirects to a GoDaddy for-sale URL, and avis.com.bz refused our requests — HTTP 403 on 9 September, and HTTP 403 and then 406 on two requests on 24 September 2026. Five others returned no HTTP response to our requests at all, which is our route failing rather than proof that no site exists.

What we did not check

Separate from the list above, because these are our limits and not the operators’: we priced one rental length — three days, airport to airport, for 21 to 24 October 2026 (and, on 9 September, for 23 to 26 September 2026) — so weekly and monthly rates are unpriced here. We stopped the AQ booking at the vehicle-options step rather than paying, so a later step could add a charge, or tax the coverage, in a way we did not see. We did not price anything through Budget’s external booking host, because it is not the operator’s own site. And we priced nothing for a driver under 25, so the doubled deposits are reported as the operators state them, not as amounts we saw quoted.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not a rental we took. We read the operators’ own websites and ran one live booking on 9 September 2026, and re-read every page and re-ran the booking for a later date on 24 September 2026; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

The list of fifteen companies, and the finding that the airport publishes no website for any of them, comes from the airport operator’s own Travel & Ground Transportation page. Each company’s website address was derived from the email domain on that page, so the set of sites checked is the airport’s list rather than ours.

The rate cards come from AQ Belize’s and Car-One’s own fleet pages, read in full and counted. The three-day totals, the 103 vehicles, the GST rate, the service fee, the passenger liability and every insurance price come from one live search on AQ Belize’s own booking engine, run on 24 September 2026 for pickup at the international airport on 21 October and return there on 24 October, carried forward into its vehicle-options step, which also printed the base-rate, fee and GST lines; the same search run on 9 September 2026 for 23 to 26 September returned the same fourteen totals. Age rules, deposits, late-return charges, fuel policies and cross-border rules come from each operator’s own terms page — AQ’s Terms & Conditions, Car-One’s Terms of Service, Budget Belize’s Terms & Conditions, Crystal’s Rental Conditions and FAQ, and Dollar Belize’s own site. Crystal’s older site was read separately at its Policies page, which is still served and does not redirect.

The fuel prices come from the Statistical Institute of Belize’s Consumer Price Index release for July 2026, published 26 August 2026 — Table 1 for the figures and the release narrative for the year-on-year changes. The finding that we could not find a newer government pump-price announcement comes from querying the Government of Belize Press Office’s own post index for “fuel” (the 30 newest matches) and for “gasoline”, newest first, on 24 September 2026 — the most recent price announcement among them is 31 March 2022, and the 2026 matches are the bus-fare decision and the Cabinet brief named above — and from checking that the site’s newest posts overall were dated that week.

Figures on this page labelled our arithmetic or our conversion are calculated by us from the sourced inputs cited below — totals, differences, percentages, per-day divisions and currency conversions at the peg. Every other figure is reproduced as its named source published it.
