A 7-Day Belize Itinerary: The Transfer Times, Fares and Cut-Offs That Set It

Verified live on 26 August 2026, on San Pedro Belize Express’s booking engine (sampled for Thursday 10 September 2026), Tropic Air’s booking engine and policy pages, Maya Island Air’s published schedules, Caribbean Sprinter’s sailings page, eight shuttle operators’ and lodges’ own transfer pages, and the Belize Institute of Archaeology’s site rules.

Four published numbers set the outer edges of a seven-day Belize trip. San Pedro Belize Express’s last water taxi from San Pedro to Belize City is 4:30 PM — a full hour earlier than its own last sailing in the other direction. Tropic Air asks 3 hours between a domestic flight and an international carrier. The ATM cave’s last tour of the day is 2:00 pm, with no entry after 3:00 pm. And the US State Department discourages driving between cities after dark.

A week in Belize is not a distance problem — the whole country’s tourist circuit is inside a 90-minute boat ride and a 40-minute flight. It is a timetable problem, and the timetables are asymmetric: on San Pedro Belize Express the last boat out of San Pedro leaves an hour before its last boat into the cayes.

Every leg, with its published time and fare

On that bus fare. Belize bus operators publish no fare table, so the “about US$10” is not a primary figure. It comes from a transfer seller’s own comparison table — tilde and all — on a page selling the expensive alternative, and a bus-enthusiast guide separately gives BZ$9.00, about US$4.50, on a page dated January 2020. Both are secondary and they differ by more than two to one; we print both and pick neither. What credibility the US$10 has is that it runs against the seller’s interest: it is telling you its own product costs about nine times the bus.

And on that shuttle price. The three quotes on this corridor do not all start in the same place, which is most of the spread between them. Cayo Inland Expeditions prices US$75 per person for two, i.e. US$150, from the airport door; Pacz Tours prices US$180 for two from the airport or the water taxi terminal; San Ignacio Shuttles’ US$140 for two is quoted from Belize City, a shorter run. The Caye Caulker → San Pedro list starts at 8:45 AM. The operator’s printed schedule shows one additional 7:00 AM departure on that leg, but it runs on three days of the week only.

Caribbean Sprinter is the second ferry operator on the same routes. Its sailings page publishes departure times only — no arrival times, no durations and no fares — and carries no operating-days note, so nothing there tells you whether the timetable varies by day of the week. Its booking engine does publish both: per-departure fares and an approximate crossing time for each route, which our Belize City to Caye Caulker ferry and BZE airport to San Pedro pages price sailing by sailing. From the sailings page:

• Belize City → Caye Caulker: 8:00, 10:30 AM, 1:30, 3:00, 4:30, 5:40 PM — ten minutes later than the last Belize Express sailing, which is occasionally the difference on an arrival day.
• Caye Caulker → Belize City: 6:30, 7:30, 8:30, 10:30 AM, 1:30, 4:30 PM — half an hour earlier than Belize Express’s last on that leg.
• Caye Caulker → San Pedro: 8:45, 11:15 AM, 2:15, 3:45, 5:15, 6:25 PM — ten minutes later than Belize Express’s last.

Last departures — the numbers that decide your first and last day

Two companies run these routes and their last sailings are not the same, so every row names who is sailing. The bolded figure is the later of the two — the one that actually bounds your day. Sprinter’s San Pedro departures are the one column its public sailings page omits; the six times come from its booking engine, priced for 16 September 2026:

Maya Island Air appears to extend the arrival-day window further than either of those: its published BZE → San Pedro schedule runs 10:40 AM to 5:40 PM, plus seasonal 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM departures marked “RESTRICTED FOR PASSENGERS ARRIVING VIA INTERNATIONAL CARRIERS”.

⚠️ Call the airline before building an arrival day on those two departures. Maya Island Air publishes its whole network as nine timetable graphics on one page, and every one of the nine is served with a Last-Modified date of Wednesday 8 February 2023 — we checked all nine on 26 August 2026. The airline publishes no dated timetable anywhere else, and its booking engine returns HTTP 403 to non-browser clients, so nothing available to us confirms that any of these times is still flown. Treat them as the airline’s standing published document, not as today’s schedule. Tropic Air’s 5:40 PM, by contrast, came from a live booking engine priced for a real date.

San Pedro Belize Express’s last boat out of San Pedro is 4:30 PM; its last boat into the cayes is 5:30 PM — and Caribbean Sprinter stretches that second figure to 5:40 PM. The operator states the asymmetry nowhere; it is only visible by reading its own two departure lists side by side.

Working backwards from your flight home, by water taxi from San Pedro

The crossing is 1 hour 30 minutes on the booking engine, and the operator’s airport shuttle is about 25 minutes. This table is our arithmetic from those two published figures against the operator’s own departure list:

Add the operator’s own front-end buffer to your departure from San Pedro: San Pedro Belize Express tells passengers to be at the terminal 30 to 45 minutes early. Caribbean Sprinter opens check-in 24 hours before departure and makes its final boarding call 10 minutes prior.

Then apply your own airline’s check-in requirement. We are not going to invent one: the only published figure we have is Tropic Air’s, and it applies to Tropic Air passengers — domestic check-in 30 minutes; international check-in 2 hours; connecting from an international airport 2 hours; connecting to an international carrier 3 hours. Maya Island Air separately asks for 40 minutes: “KINDLY CHECK-IN AT LEAST 40 MINUTES BEFORE FLIGHT DEPARTURE TIME”.

Fly the last leg instead and the picture changes completely. The first San Pedro → BZE flight is 6:00 AM and the flight is 13 minutes, landing about 6:13 AM; on Tropic Air’s own 3-hour connection rule that supports an international departure from about 9:15 AM.

Flying versus the boat to San Pedro — we checked every party size

Air is 13 minutes gate to gate from BZE. Water is about 25 minutes of shuttle plus a 90-minute crossing, so about 1 hour 55 minutes of moving time — a difference of about an hour and forty minutes. That excludes waiting for the next sailing, which can reach 90 minutes on an eight-departure timetable, and excludes Tropic Air’s 30-minute domestic check-in.

On the midweek US$110 fare, the water route is cheaper at every party size we computed, and it does not flip:

The one thing that would reverse it is the fare itself. Tropic Air’s flexible-date strip showed US$33.88 on Saturday 19 September 2026 and on Sunday 13 September 2026 against US$110 Monday to Friday — the two dates our BZE airport to San Pedro page priced. At a fare in the thirties, flying is cheaper and faster at every party size in the table. The engine shows no fare class or condition behind that number, so we cannot tell you whether it is a promotional bucket, a resident fare or an ordinary weekend price. Price your own dates.

The airline also runs a separate fare-deals widget showing a lower round-trip “from” figure. We are not printing it, for the reason our two transport pages give: it labels a round trip at less than half the one-way fare the live booking engine returned the same day, and it carries a 48-hour staleness disclaimer. A figure that needs a warning wrapped round it travels without the warning attached.

The two Belize City airports are not interchangeable

Philip Goldson International (BZE) is 10 miles (16 km) outside Belize City, in Ladyville. Belize City Municipal (TZA) is about 1 mile (1.5 km) from downtown and 5 minutes by taxi from the cruise terminal.

Both Tropic Air and Maya Island Air publish separate timetables from each airport. Booking a municipal departure after an international arrival at BZE means an unplanned cross-city transfer; San Ignacio Shuttles’ airport page quotes a taxi between BZE and Belize City at "~$30 USD" and 15–25 minutes.

The hard cut-offs on the big day trips

Two of those reshape a week. The Blue Hole dive is roughly an eleven-hour day and cannot share a day with a transfer. Maya Island Air’s scenic flight runs four days a week, so building the week around that carrier’s flight means the caye nights have to straddle a Sunday, Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Tropic Air publishes a 1:00 PM departure for the same tour and states no day restriction on it.

The ATM cave’s 2:00 pm last tour interacts badly with an arrival day. On the longer published drive time from the international airport — 3 hours — a landing later than about 11:00 am cannot reach it, and that leaves nothing for getting out of the airport.

Hol Chan is the opposite: its 2:00 pm departure pairs with the 8:00 or 9:00 AM water taxi from Belize City, which lands on Ambergris Caye at 9:30 or 10:30 AM.

One seven-day shape that satisfies every published constraint above

This is our assembly of published timetables, not a recommendation about what is worth seeing. Every leg below has a published departure and every activity fits inside its own published cut-off.

• Day 1 — land at BZE, reach Ambergris Caye. Tropic Air until 5:40 PM (13 min) is the leg we can price live. Maya Island Air’s international-connection departures at 6:30 and 7:30 PM are on a schedule graphic dated February 2023 — call the airline before you count on them. By water: shuttle about 25 minutes, then the last Belize City sailing — 5:30 PM on San Pedro Belize Express, 5:40 PM on Caribbean Sprinter — and a crossing of 1 hr 30 min.
• Day 2 — Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley. The 9:00 am or the 2:00 pm departure; about 90 minutes; US$50.00 plus US$15 cash.
• Day 3 — Blue Hole, all of it. 5:30 AM check-in to about 4:30 PM. If you are not diving, the scenic flight is one hour instead — check which carrier flies on your day.
• Day 4 — transfer to Cayo. San Pedro → Belize City on a morning sailing (1 hr 30 min, US$34.00), then the road west: 1.5 to 3 hours, sources disagree. Take a morning boat, because a late start puts the drive into the dark.
• Day 5 — the ATM cave. US$145 from San Ignacio, and be on a tour that starts well before the 2:00 pm cut-off.
• Day 6 — Xunantunich, 8 miles west, open until 5:00 pm with last entry at 4:00 pm driving.
• Day 7 — fly home. From Cayo the drive back to BZE is the same disputed 1.5 to 3 hours; plan on the longer figure and on your airline’s check-in rule.

Swap the Cayo half for Placencia or Hopkins and the transfer arithmetic changes sharply: the road from the international airport to Placencia is a disputed 2.5 to 5 hours across eight sources — the widest spread on this page — while Maya Island Air publishes forty minutes for its Belize City–Placencia flight and Tropic Air’s booking engine returns 25 minutes nonstop, 30 via Dangriga. That is the strongest case in this cohort for flying one internal leg.

Where the operators disagree — printed both ways

Caye Caulker → Belize City crossing time. The same company contradicts itself. Its live booking engine shows 1 hour 0 minutes on every sailing (a 6:30 AM departure arriving 7:30 AM); its own FAQ says “approximately 45 mins” both ways. The engine is per-sailing, dated and transactional, so it is what we put in the table — but we are not presenting the asymmetry as settled.

Caye Caulker ↔ San Pedro. Same pattern: the engine gives 45 minutes Caye Caulker → San Pedro and 30 minutes San Pedro → Caye Caulker; the FAQ gives “approximately 30 mins” in both directions.

BZE → San Ignacio. Six sources on this one leg, a 2× spread, and the split is not random. The lodges quote the short time — San Ignacio Resort Hotel (“72 miles west … about one and a half hour drive”) and The Lodge at Chaa Creek (“about 1.5 hours”). The shuttle operators quote the long one — 2 hours 30 minutes (William’s Belize Shuttle), 2.5 to 3 hours (San Ignacio Shuttles and BZ Shuttle Service), about 2 hours (Cayo Inland Expeditions). We publish 1.5 to 3 hours with both ends attributed.

BZE → Placencia. Naia Resort calls it a “scenic three-hour drive”. San Ignacio Shuttles gives approximately 4 hours on its destination page, 4 to 4.5 hours on its airport page, and 4 to 5 hours on its home page — three figures from one operator across three of its own pages, and the 4-to-5 is the outer edge of everything we found.

Four more sources sit on our Placencia page and they run shorter, not longer: the Placencia chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association says approximately 3 hours, Belize Ground Transfers lists 3 hr, and BZ Shuttle Service contradicts itself at 2.5 hours on one of its own pages and 3.5 to 4 hours on another. Put all eight together and the published spread is 2.5 to 5 hours, with no two operators obliged to agree and one of them disagreeing with itself. Plan on the long end, because that is the end an afternoon departure has to survive.

Belize City ↔ San Pedro between the two ferry operators. Belize Express’s engine says 1 hour 30 minutes; Caribbean Sprinter’s booking results page states that “The sailing duration for Belize City to San Pedro is approximately 75 minutes” — about fifteen minutes quicker. Those are two operators timing their own boats, not a contested number. What we are not using is Sprinter’s separate marketing claim, “Save about an hour on a Belize City to San Pedro round trip sailing compared to other carriers” — a round-trip claim, unverified, and not convertible into a one-way crossing time.

The rules that are not in any timetable

• Schedule inter-city drives to finish before dark. The State Department strongly discourages US government employees from driving between cities in Belize after dark and tells US citizens to follow the same guidance — one of the two specific behaviours inside the 11 March 2026 advisory. The UK FCDO adds that Belize roads are “often unlit”, with a “lack of emergency road assistance”. At three hours from San Ignacio to Placencia, a 3:00 PM departure is already marginal.
• Water taxi children and groups. Under 1 year travels free as a lap child. Children aged 4 to 10 pay a children’s rate on domestic routes and anyone over 10 pays the full adult fare. Groups over 12 people get one free ticket.
• Domestic baggage. Tropic Air publishes size limits and no weight limit for checked bags (maximum 18 × 30 × 13.5 in; over 62 linear inches may be refused) — we confirmed that absence across both its summary and its ten-section detailed policy, so it is a finding rather than a gap. Maya Island Air allows one checked bag at a maximum of 50 lbs and 62 linear inches, carry-on 15 lbs, with excess from BZE at BZ$0.41–1.13 per pound. Tropic Air warns excess baggage may travel on a later flight, which is part of why it asks for 3 hours on international connections.

What the operators don’t publish

Gaps in the operators’ own information, not in ours:

• Tropic Air fares for every leg except BZE–San Pedro and BZE–Placencia, the two we exercised on its engine. The site publishes fare brands (Lite, Everyday, Flexi, Flexi Plus, Local, Business) but no fare table and no timetable on the route pages. On durations it publishes three and no more: 13 minutes BZE–San Pedro from the engine, and approximately 20 minutes TZA–San Pedro and 15 minutes TZA–Caye Caulker on its cruise-ship page.
• Maya Island Air’s current fares. Its booking site returns HTTP 403 to non-browser clients. The only fare document it publishes is a downloads-page sheet whose own header reads “Effective November 1st, 2015”. We are not quoting those as 2026 fares.
• Any Caribbean Sprinter fare, duration or operating-days note on its public sailings page. The page is departure times only. The fares and the approximate crossing times exist, but only inside the booking engine after a date search — we exercised it for 16 September 2026 and the results are on the two ferry pages linked above.
• Whether Caribbean Sprinter’s timetable varies by day of the week. It publishes one schedule and no operating-days statement either way.
• Official public bus fares and timetables. No Belize operator publishes a fare table; one operator’s booking site returned “no bus trip found” for every date tried and another domain does not resolve. The “about US$10” figure above is a competing transfer seller’s comparison, and a bus-enthusiast guide gives BZ$9.00 — both secondary.
• Prices from William’s Belize Shuttle and BZ Shuttle Service. William’s says so outright: “Our Transfer Prices are for a private, combined, or shared shuttle and not a schedule, therefore it cannot be listed.”
• The Blue Hole scenic flight price. Both carriers publish the tour; neither publishes a fare.
• San Pedro Belize Express round-trip fares. We priced one way only and will not extrapolate a return.
• On-time performance for any Belize ferry or airline.
• Whether a no-fly interval applies between a Blue Hole dive day and a flight. Neither dive operator published one, and we are not going to assert the usual guidance without a citation.

How we researched this

Scope: this page reports source research, not an on-site test. We checked the booking systems, timetables and official sources named below on the date shown; calculations, unresolved disagreements and information we could not verify are labelled explicitly.

Water taxi departure times, per-sailing crossing durations and one-way fares came from San Pedro Belize Express’s live booking engine on 26 August 2026, sampled for Thursday 10 September 2026, cross-read against the operator’s printed 2025 schedule and its FAQ — which is where the contradictions above surfaced. Caribbean Sprinter’s sailing list came from its sailings page and its boarding rules from its contract of carriage. Tropic Air’s 13-minute BZE–San Pedro duration and its US$110 midweek fare came from its booking engine; its check-in and connection buffers, airport distances and scenic-flight slot from its own policy and tour pages. Maya Island Air’s schedules, restricted evening departures and baggage rules came from its published schedule and policy pages.

Ground transfer times and prices were read from eight operators’ and lodges’ own pages, which is how the 2× spread became visible; we name who says what rather than averaging. Site opening hours, last-entry rules and the ATM cave’s guide requirement came from the Belize Institute of Archaeology. Tour times and prices came from the operators selling them. The after-dark driving rule is the US State Department advisory of 11 March 2026.

Arrival times at BZE, the per-person water fares and the party-size comparison are our own arithmetic from those published figures, computed for every case in the range rather than at the endpoints.
