I have always had a great experience of travelling with travel buddies , as I choose them wisely from travel social networking sites. But you have very well written your post. Its nice post.

I didn’t travel across the world, but across the US with my THEN-bestie. She wants to road trip to get over her car anxiety. I get it. I was down with that and sensitive, but whenever we got to a cool place, like Montana or elsewhere, she’d stay up allll night so she could sleep allll day. Threw my whole schedule off. We rarely got to really look around the towns, because by the time we were out of the hotel, most places were closing in an hour! Or closed! It was such a downer, and halfway through she says, "Maybe we should just go back now, I don’t want to be like this," because I was getting frustrated with her childishness and lost my cool. I can’t sleep two hours a night and then drive hours during the day to our next destination! We got to Yellowstone and she wouldn’t even get out of the car because, "It seemed touristy and too many tourists were there, she really didn’t care, I could just go." Umm.. why’d you pay to get into the park then? I could have easily not gone if you’re going to act like a freaking baby and not do the things we planned to do/be a good sport and cater to my wants as I’ve catered to yours, which included stopping several times while driving because of her anxiety.

Pick your travel buddies carefully, y’all.

Love your site and this post! I’m a solo traveling guy so I may not fit your audience but relate a lot with what you’re writing about!
I can’t stand travelers that are ageists. At 44 I’ve been told I’m too old for hostels and I’m too old to be out backpacking. They feel when you reach a certain age you’re supposed to be staying in all inclusives and take package tours (yuck). Could be because I’ve seen older travelers staying in hostels and taking longer trips.
The other type I can’t stand are the “social media influencers”. The ones with 10k+ followers on instagram or 20k+ followers on Twitter. They’re constantly trying to tell you how famous they are. Love to brag about how they get paid to travel. While traveling they’re obsessed with growing their follower base. Luckily they’re easy to spot so I give them a very wide berth.
Keep up the great work! Safe travels!

The ones I can’t stand the most is #3. If you’re traveling solo and independently you need to make decisions. My tolerance for “IDK” types has reached its limit. I just walk away and do my own thing when I see those types.

Rachel,

Thanks so much for commenting! I was being silly, I definitely have friends that are more anxious and I try my best to be understanding. I’d never want them to feel bad for something that’s out of their control. I’ve had moments of anxiety, and it’s NOT fun! So I definitely know that it can be as equally horrible and likely worse for the person who is struggling.

I so agree with your point about being the light for others. Sometimes we can help people step outside of their comfort zone and make them feel more courageous. That’s a huge gift to give to a friend! Your comment wasn’t negative at all. I LOVE your view point 🙂 We should definitely give people a chance, even though they may travel differently. It could be beneficial to both people involved!

I just want to say that I appreciate this post because it lets people like me know that we may not be that fun to travel with… at first
But after that first time traveling at 17 my friend and I traveled together again many times and I’m much more relaxed and decisive, I’m glad that my friend took the time to help me appreciate traveling and understanding my anxiety with travel and helping me break out of it! I’m now a totally different traveler and it’s pretty amazing and I owe it all to her… so I don’t want anyone to think that you should suffer traveling with someone who is maybe a little like this but I don’t know give them a chance IN SMALL DOSES, definitely don’t put yourself in a horrible situation, i agree with Ciara all the way that you shouldn’t travel with people who are narrow minded, but it’s also nice to help friends get out of there comfort zone, if you think they are willing to change! I don’t want this comment to be negative AT ALL, that is not my intent, I just wanted to share a little of my personal experience 🙂 (ps I definitely don’t just go to “fast food places” or do all the things mentioned in the post, I’m a firm believer in immersing yourself in the culture!)
