California has always felt like magic to me. There’s something about the light, the landscapes, the energy. This spring, I finally carved out time to experience the state in a more intentional way with a road trip that blended city life, beach vibes, and a natural beauty. I flew into San Francisco International Airport, rented a car, and spent several days exploring Oakland, Santa Cruz, and Sonoma. Each destination offered something totally different, and together they created one of my favorite travel experiences in a long time.

Whether you’re craving culture and diversity, a dreamy seaside escape, or a peaceful reset surrounded by wine country views, this Northern California route is a perfect way to experience it all. Here’s how my journey unfolded, plus everything I’d recommend if you’re planning your own.

First Stop: Oakland

Distance from SFO: 30 minutes

I began my trip in Oakland, and honestly, it exceeded my expectations. The city felt vibrant, creative, and most of all, welcoming. I loved the diversity here – not just in the people, but in the food, art, and experiences. There was a sense of belonging I hadn’t expected, and it made me want to explore every corner.

Ride a Gondola on Lake Merritt

Lake Merritt is known for its walking trails and scenic views, but I decided to experience it from the water. I booked a private Venetian-style gondola ride with Dolce Vita Gondola, which turned out to be such a peaceful and charming way to see the lake. I picked up a glass of wine from Lake Chalet, located right on the water, and enjoyed a relaxing float as the city moved around me.

Screenshot

Visit the Oakland Zoo and Ride the Sky Gondola

At the Oakland Zoo, I took the Skyride gondola up over the hills, where I was greeted with sweeping views of the Bay Area. At the top lies the California Trail, a beautiful and educational area that’s home to rescued native wildlife including bison, condors, and even grizzly bears.

Try Something Adventurous with BANDALOOP

If you’re in the mood to step outside of your comfort zone, BANDALOOP offers vertical dance classes that are unlike anything else. I learned how to move and dance while suspended from a harness on the side of a building. It was exhilarating, surprisingly accessible for beginners, and absolutely unforgettable.

Experience Friday Nights at OMCA

One of my favorite evenings was spent at the Oakland Museum of California. On Friday nights, the museum comes alive with food trucks, live music, and open galleries. It’s the perfect way to end a busy day and connect with the community through art, history, and great vibes.

Where I Stayed: Kissel Uptown Oakland

I stayed at Kissel Uptown Oakland, a modern boutique hotel with an onsite restaurant and rooftop lounge. Its central location made it easy to walk to nearly everything I did, and the atmosphere was both stylish and comfortable.

Where to Eat in Oakland

Oakland’s food scene is incredibly diverse and packed with flavor. I dined solo at some of the most memorable spots I’ve visited in recent years.

• Burma Superstar: This was my first time trying Burmese food, and it quickly became a favorite. The flaky platha bread, chicken curry, and calamari were all unforgettable. Every bite was packed with flavor and warmth.

Enssarro: A beloved Ethiopian restaurant known for its bold spices and traditional dishes. I ordered the meat and veggie sampler, which was beautifully seasoned and served with Jebena coffee and incense at the end. It was both comforting and ceremonial.

Parche: A bright and modern restaurant inspired by Afro-Colombian culture. I came here for brunch, and one bite of the brunch bowl instantly transported me back to Colombia.

Jaji: Located right next to my hotel, this was my first experience with Afghan cuisine. The food was flavorful and deeply satisfying, and the space was just as beautiful as the dishes.

Second Stop: Santa Cruz

Drive Time from Oakland: 2 hours

From the city energy of Oakland, I made my way down the coast to Santa Cruz. As soon as I arrived, I felt like I had stepped into the California I used to dream about as a child—sunshine, surfers, colorful boardwalks, and that salty breeze. It was playful, vibrant, and it brought out my inner child in the best way.

Ride the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is iconic, and it didn’t disappoint. I rode the historic Giant Dipper roller coaster and took in a dreamy sunset from the Sky Glider as I floated above the beach. It felt like something out of a summer movie.

Dine at Shadowbrook in Capitola

For dinner, I headed to Shadowbrook, a romantic and cozy spot accessible by cable car. The space was covered in vines and glowing with fairy lights. It felt like I had stepped into a fairytale.

Stroll Through Capitola Village

Capitola Village is full of charm, with pastel storefronts, beachy boutiques, and relaxed cafes. I spent the afternoon wandering through the area, soaking up the laid-back energy and picking up a few local treasures along the way.

Watch Surfers at Steamer Lane and Visit the Surfing Museum

Watching the surfers at Steamer Lane was mesmerizing. I also stopped by the nearby Surfing Museum, located inside a lighthouse with panoramic views. The whole experience captured the carefree spirit of California’s surf culture.

Explore the Redwoods and Visit the Mystery Spot

Just 15 minutes away in Felton, I hiked among the towering redwoods and visited the quirky, gravity-defying Mystery Spot. Whether you believe in energy vortexes or not, it’s a fun and fascinating stop.

Don’t Miss These Local Gems

• Gayle’s Bakery: The perfect spot for fresh pastries

Hidden Peak Teahouse: A peaceful place to slow down and sip

Penny Ice Creamery: A local favorite for small-batch ice cream

The Picnic Basket: Great lunch by the beach

Zameen at the Point: Delicious Mediterranean food with a view

Where I Stayed: Chaminade Resort

I stayed at Chaminade Resort, nestled in the forested hills above Santa Cruz. With its stunning sunset views and quiet surroundings, it was the perfect place to reset before the final leg of the trip.

Final Stop: Sonoma County

Drive Time from Santa Cruz: 3 hours

After a few days of beachside adventure, I met up with the Visit California team and we made our way north to Sonoma. I’ve been traveling slower lately after dealing with burnout, and Sonoma felt like exactly what I needed. The pace was gentler, the scenery was calming, and it gave me space to just breathe and be.

Wine Tasting at Bartholomew Estate

I started the day with a wine tasting at Bartholomew Estate, and I was immediately struck by how peaceful and scenic the property was. It felt like a world away. The wine was lovely, but it was the stillness of the place that left the biggest impression.

Coastal Foraging with a Local Guide

One of the most unique experiences of the trip was booking a coastal foraging tour through California State Parks. I walked along the rugged coastline, tasted wild plants, and learned about the native ecosystem. It was grounding, educational, and surprisingly calming.

Dinner at Sea Ranch Lodge

I wrapped up the day with dinner at Sea Ranch Lodge, where the food was fresh and flavorful, and the sunset view over the cliffs felt almost unreal. We even stumbled upon blooming pink wildflowers on the drive in, adding to the magic of the moment.

Where I stayed in Sonoma

I stayed at Timber Cove Resort, perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific. It felt secluded and peaceful, the kind of place that encourages you to disconnect and soak in the beauty of your surroundings.

How to Plan This California Road Trip

Here’ s a simple overview of the route I followed:

Fly into San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

Oakland: 30-minute drive from SFO

Santa Cruz: 2 hours from Oakland

Sonoma: 3 hours from Santa Cruz

Return to SFO: 1.5 hours from Sonoma

Each destination brought something completely different to the journey. Oakland gave me a sense of community and cultural richness. Santa Cruz let me play and reconnect with joy. And Sonoma reminded me to slow down and savor the present moment.

If you’ve been dreaming of a California road trip that balances energy with ease, this route might just be your sign to go for it.

”If you wait for people to travel, you’ll wait forever.” I’ve lived(and traveled) by this motto for the past nine years and it’s led me to over 30 countries solo. Most recently, it led me to Brazil for Carnival with Luxe Tribes and I’m so glad that I didn’t have to wait around for others to make it happen. I’ve been wanting to experience this legendary celebration for YEARS, but none of my friends could ever make it work. I was blessed to be invited on a Luxe Tribes Group Trip, a Black-owned travel agency specializing in luxury group trips for Black women,  and I’m here to report back on the trip of a life-time.

Though I will always advocate for solo travel, Carnival called for community – both for safety in a party/festival environment and in order to effectively navigate Brazil’s language barriers. While I could have done Carnival solo, Luxe Tribes effortlessly executed a trip that met all of my desires and beyond. The true magic? Being surrounded by Black women who just *got* eachother, creating an instant connection that isn’t always easy to come by.

In this Luxe Tribes Group Trip review, I’m breaking down my entire experience traveling to Rio for Carnival with this Black women travel group. I’ll spill all the tea – the good, the real, and everything you need to know if you’re considering traveling with Luxe Tribes on one of their luxury group trips for Black women.

Where I Traveled with Luxe Tribes

I traveled to Brazil with Luxe Tribes February 26 to March 6 2025 for the biggest Carnival celebration in the world. The trip included a 6-day, 5-night stay at a luxury hotel on Copacabana Beach.

Who I Traveled With – Luxe Tribes

Luxe Tribes is a Black-owned travel agency that organizes some of the best trips for Black female professionals looking for upscale travel experiences worldwide. They plan trips that focus on cultural immersion and authentic experiences without sacrificing comfort and quality. After spending my early twenties hostel-hopping and riding on the struggle bus, my thirties are all about treating myself when the occasion calls for it – and Luxe Tribes definitely delivers in that department.

You can join a Luxe Tribes small group trip with up to 16 like-minded travelers or they can execute a personalized itinerary that will give you the best overview of the destination of your choice. I had the opportunity to experience both their private and group tour options, which were both planned out perfectly.

I’ve traveled with many group companies before, but meeting the other Luxe Tribe travelers in Rio showed me that the quality of Black women LT attracts is what sets them apart. Being surrounded by brilliant, accomplished Black women who not only shared my passion for travel but also understood my lived experiences? Priceless.

How many of us have friends who can’t get PTO, can’t afford to travel, or simply don’t prioritize seeing the world? That same dilemma is what made me start traveling solo in the first place and ain’t nobody got time for that. With a Luxe Tribes group trip, you’re instantly placed with women who value these experiences just as much as you do.

Who is a Luxe Tribes group trip for?

  • Black women travelers who want luxury AND authentic travel experiences
  • Solo travelers who want safety and community while exploring
  • First time solo travelers who want to go solo without going completely alone
  • Professional women who work hard and want their vacation to truly FEEL like a vacation. No planning necessary!
  • Travelers who need the perfect balance of structured activities and free time.
  • Women looking to build genuine connections with other like-minded Black female professionals

Why travel to Brazil for Carnival with Luxe Tribes?

Why NOT do Carnival solo or with a small group of friends? As yall know, I never back down from a solo challenge but one thing is for sure – I would NOT recommend doing Carnival solo. Here’s why:

  • With Carnival bringing in tens of millions of travelers to Brazil, advance planning is a must. Day tours sell out quickly, traffic is chaotic, etc. Without local connections on the ground like Luxe Tribes provides, planning may be difficult to manage.
  • The language barrier in Brazil is significant. I met less than 5 people who spoke English across 3 weeks in Brazil. If language barriers overwhelm you, then you’ll feel pretty out of place while trying to navigate the biggest event in the country for 1 week straight. This means booking transportation, reservations, etc. will be a constant struggle. With Luxe Tribes, you’ll have local guides on the ground who speak Portuguese. They’ll take care of the logistics for you.
  • You must be very vigilant about safety in Brazil in general but things get much crazier during Carnival. A luxury group for Black women offers safety in numbers when enjoying block parties and nighttime festivities. I would never recommend partying alone in Brazil, but that’s the entire point of Carnival, so you’d miss out on the main events if you chose to go solo.

How Booking A Trip With Luxe Tribes Works

Booking a Luxe Tribes group trip is straightforward:

1. Visit Luxetribes.com to browse available trips

2. Select a trip based on your interests, dates, and budget

3. Make a down payment to secure your spot

4. Pay the remainder in monthly installments or all at once

5. Receive pre-trip information, including a PowerPoint presentation about the destination and what to expect

6. Join a group chat with other travelers to connect before the trip

7. Show up and enjoy your trip with everything planned for you!

What’s Included in the Luxe Tribes Trip Price?

This will vary depending on which destination you choose, but my 6-day, 5-night Carnival trip in Rio De Janeiro included:

  • 5 nights at a luxury hotel on Copacabana Beach
  • Daily breakfast and five included meals
  • Welcome dinner at Fogo de Chão, a premier steakhouse
  • Airport transfers and transportation to all included activities
  • Christ the Redeemer tour with a professional photographer
  • Helicopter tour over Rio
  • Sugarloaf Mountain and Selarón Steps excursion
  • Cooking class or forest tour option
  • Samba dance class
  • Professional makeup for Carnival
  • Tickets to the Sambadrome for the Carnival parade
  • Local guides and full-time assistance
  • Luxe Tribes group trip goodie bag

Is Luxe Tribes Worth The Cost?

Let’s be honest – traveling with Luxe Tribes(and group travel in general) isn’t the cheapest way to experience Brazil. However, you’ll receive an amazing value for your trip investment:

  • Convenience: Everything is planned and booked for you, saving countless hours of research and coordination.
  • Access: Carnival tickets, restaurant reservations, and activities during peak season are secured on your behalf the moment you book your trip. No thoughts, just vibes!
  • Quality: Luxury accommodations and experiences that have been vetted
  • Safety: Traveling with a group and having local guides in a city known for safety concerns
  • Expertise: Local knowledge that helps you avoid tourist traps and experience the destination authentically
  • Peace of mind: No stress about logistics, transportation, or language barriers

So while you might pay more upfront compared to planning everything yourself, the time saved, stress avoided, and quality of experiences gained makes it worthwhile for those who value these aspects of travel.

How Much Free Time Do You Get with Luxe Tribes?

One of my favorite aspects of traveling with Luxe Tribes was the balance between structured activities and free time. The trip was roughly 50/50:

Mornings and early afternoons were typically dedicated to guided activities and tours while later afternoons and some evenings were free to explore on your own. You’ll have a free day, and ultimately all activities are your choice to attend.

They’ve set it up so that you’ll have enough day tours to ensure you don’t miss the highlights, but plenty of down-time to do your own thing or simply relax at the beach or hotel.

Should You Sign Up to Travel with Luxe Tribes Alone?

Absolutely! As someone who advocates for solo travel, I found traveling with Luxe Tribes to be ideal for solo travelers because you’ll instantly have a group of like-minded travelers to share experiences with. You can join group activities when you want and explore independently when you need time to recharge your batteries.

What’s It Like Traveling with Strangers?

I know what you’re thinking – “Girl, isn’t it awkward being stuck with people you don’t know?” It can be a bit uncomfortable in the beginning, but you quickly build bonds over shared experiences. With a max group size of 16, Luxe Tribes’ group trips are big enough to find your people but small enough not to feel like a tourist herd. There’s ALWAYS someone down to join whatever random activity you want to do during free time and there’s zero pressure to stick with the group 24/7 – unless you want to, of course. That pre-trip group chat helps break the ice before you even land and the welcome dinner on day 1 will help the group break the ice upon arrival.

What really blew me away was meeting multiple women who were on their 2nd, 3rd, even 5th Luxe Tribes group trip! When people keep coming back, you know the company must be doing something right. These repeat travelers shared stories from their previous trips and how Luxe Tribes had handled any issues that came up with care and professionalism. They mentioned seeing consistent improvements based on customer feedback, which is exactly what you want from a travel company.

What Are the Accommodations Like?

Luxe Tribes booked us a stay at the Grand Mercure Rio de Janeiro Copacabana. I loved it so much I paid extra to stay longer after the trip!

They nailed it with the accommodation because the hotel was perfectly situated for an event like Carnival. It was just steps away from Copacabana Beach. I’m talking walk across the street and your toes are in the sand. Not to mention, so many Carnival street parties (blocos) happened right outside of the hotel. When there’s that much traffic and chaos in the city, being able to just walk downstairs to join the fun instead of finding transportation is a game-changer.

The hotel offered room service(which I definitely utilized a time or two), buffet breakfast to feast on before long day tours, and a rooftop pool to watch the sunset from.

Choosing the wrong accommodation location in Brazil could cost you in more ways than one. Back in 2019, I booked what I thought was a cute Airbnb in Rio, and ended up witnessing a literal shootout on my street! This hotel was in a secure area with doormen and proper security. This is why it’s crucial to travel with a tour company that doesn’t cut corners on any aspect of trip planning or logistics.

What’s Transportation Like?

Transportation was seamless throughout the trip:

  • Airport transfers were included and on time
  • Dedicated drivers for all excursions
  • No need to navigate public transportation or deal with language barriers
  • No worries about finding reliable and safe taxis or Ubers (which can be challenging in Rio)
  • Consistency in drivers built trust and eliminated safety concerns

The value of reliable transportation cannot be overstated during Carnival when the city is extremely congested and ride services are in high demand.

Do You Need to Speak the Language in Brazil?

The language barrier in Brazil is no joke. This is where traveling with Luxe Tribes was a lifesaver:

  • Local guides handled all the communication with drivers, restaurants, and attractions
  • I didn’t have to stress about negotiating prices or getting directions. Guides informed us how much we should be paying for street snacks, souvenirs, etc.
  • The pre-trip materials included helpful Portuguese phrases (but honestly, even my attempts at pronunciation got blank stares)
  • All bookings and reservations were handled in advance

If you’re planning to go, start practicing on Duolingo NOW. Even just basic phrases will help, though be prepared for rapid-fire responses you won’t understand. Having guides who speak the language fluently was one of the most valuable parts of this trip.

How’s the Food?

My Luxe Tribes package included:

  • Welcome dinner at Fogo de Chão, Rio’s premier steakhouse. Everything was on point!
  • Lunches at restaurants with stunning views of the city, which would have been difficult to book independently during Carnival.

Finding good restaurants on my own after the trip was actually quite challenging, which proves the value of having local experts select the best dining venues.

How’s Customer Service?

The customer service from Luxe Tribes was excellent from start to finish:

  • Pre-trip communication was on point with detailed information, timely responsiveness, and a helpful PowerPoint presentation about the destination
  • Local guides and staff available 24/7 on the ground
  • Local guides were accommodating and quick to resolve any issues that arose. When one activity had to be rescheduled due to traffic, they quickly arranged an alternative day and time so the group wouldn’t miss out
  • The local guides were professional yet warm. They remembered preferences and made everyone feel valued, which isn’t always easy with a big group.

My Personal Experience on my Carnival Trip in Rio With Luxe Tribes

My top 5 experiences included:

1. The Helicopter Tour – Rio has one of the top five cityscapes in the world, so seeing Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, and those beaches from above? Life changing.

2. Professional Photos at Christ the Redeemer

As someone who’s usually the one behind the camera on solo trips, having a professional photographer at one of the Seven Wonders of the World was a serious highlight. I’ve visited six wonders and have awkward selfies or random tourist-taken photos from all of them except this one! Now I’ve got professional shots that didn’t involve me asking strangers to take 15 versions.

3. Exploring the Santa Teresa Neighborhood

This charming, quiet neighborhood was the perfect contrast to the high-energy beach areas. I visited Rio back in 2019 and never even heard about this spot – it wasn’t on any of my Pinterest boards or TikTok recommendations. This is exactly why traveling with a luxury group trip for Black women that has real local knowledge makes such a difference.

4. Carnival Done RIGHT

Getting tickets to the Sambadrome without the stress, having a professional makeup artist, and experiencing everything with a group of other Black female travelers? This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I’m so glad I didn’t have to DIY it.

5. Learning to Samba (Kind Of)

Dancing is the heartbeat of Brazil and Carnival itself, so having the opportunity to learn from actual Brazilian dancers gave me a deeper appreciation for what I was seeing at the parades. The fact that they offered this cultural experience (alongside a cooking class option) showed that Luxe Tribes really crafted a well-rounded culturally immersive trip.

Would I Recommend Traveling with Luxe Tribes?

Without hesitation, ABSOLUTELY YES! Especially for:

  • Black women who want to travel solo safely without sacrificing authentic experiences or nightlife.
  • First-timers to Brazil who don’t want to deal with that learning curve during the chaos of Carnival
  • Anyone who wants to kick back and relax on vacation without stressing about logistics
  • Black female professionals looking for elevated travel experiences

After hitting 70+ countries through all kinds of travel styles, Luxe Tribes stands out as the absolute best tour company for Black female professionals. They understand our specific needs and preferences in a way that generic travel companies just won’t get.

My General Tips for Traveling to Brazil for Carnival

  • Start practicing your Portuguese NOW!
  • Research activities & restaurants for your free timeI saved some TikToks of restaurants and spots I wanted to check out during downtime.
  • Get an eSIM. I used Holafly which gave me unlimited data throughout my trip with no issues. Having data is non-negotiable for maps, translation apps, and staying connected abroad – especially in Rio, since you won’t be able to use a physical sim card as a tourist
  • Bring a backup phone device for safety – I packed an old iPhone as theft can be common in Rio, especially with the crowds during Carnival
  • Purchase travel insurance so you can be reimbursed incase of lost luggage, theft,  medical emergencies, or transportation issues
  • Extend your trip like I did to explore other parts of Carnival such as Salvador – the Blackest city outside of Africa
  • Limit cash carried. I used Apple Pay for almost everything in Rio, which was super convenient. If your cards get stolen, you can still use your phone to pay. I only took about $50 cash out of the hotel per day and I used my card for bigger purchases
  • Leave any expensive clothing or jewelry at home. I met a girl whose necklace was literally snatched right off her neck at a ‘bloco’ party. Better safe than sorry
  • NEVER walk alone in Rio, especially at night. Take Ubers everywhere if you’re not with the group. I know multiple people who got robbed trying to walk short distances, even in “good” areas
  • Print copies of your passport and store it digitally (I email it to myself)

What to Pack for Carnival

  • Liquid IV for hydration in the heat, while drinking alcohol, etc.
  • Portable fan for the strong Rio sun
  • Fanny pack
  • Money belt to avoid pickpocketing
  • Colorful clothing
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • High SPF sunscreen
  • Packable shopping bag. Stop by Farm Rio for some vacay dresses and customize your own flip-flops at Havaianas

My Final Thoughts On Traveling with Luxe Tribes

If it weren’t for Luxe Tribes, then another year would have flown by without me crossing Carnival off of my bucket-list. What could have been a stressful, potentially overwhelming experience turned into one of the most memorable trips of my life. Having traveled to so many places solo, I was honestly shocked at how much I enjoyed having everything handled for me while still having the freedom to do my own thing.

For my fellow Black women travelers out there, especially those who work demanding jobs and don’t have time(or the desire) to research every little detail – this Black-owned travel agency will curate the ultimate adventure that will suit your travel needs. Luxe Tribes has a true understanding of our unique needs in various destinations around the world such as Brazil, Bali, Thailand, and many more. On top of that, their built-in community is something that you just can’t put a price on.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized how difficult it can be to find people who share both my love for travel and my lived experiences as a Black woman. The women I met through Luxe Tribes were accomplished, intelligent, and inspiring. If you refuse to wait for the trip to make it out of the group chat in 2025 and beyond, then there’s no better tour company for you to travel with than Luxe Tribes.

If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you already know I’ve been having an amazing time exploring Sierra Leone. This West African gem is still relatively off the beaten path, which means it’s ripe for discovery! I’ve been absolutely blown away by the stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality of the people here.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable travel experience, I highly recommend adding Sierra Leone to your list. And to give you a head start, I’ve put together a roundup of my favorite things to do in this incredible country.

Here are my favorite things to do in Sierra Leone:

  • Explore the Capital: Freetown – Freetown, the capital city, will be your launchpad for your trip. It’s a mix of history, culture, and modern life. The city’s museums offer a somber yet important look at the country’s past, while others simply celebrate the culture. Stroll through the chaotically colorful markets, where you can find everything from colorful fabrics and handmade crafts to fresh produce and spices. Engage with the friendly locals, who are always eager to share their stories and traditions. And when the sun sets, immerse yourself in the city’s nightlife scene. While we didn’t get a chance to dive into the nightlife, our guide told us that it’s a must!
  • Take a Cooking Class – Since I’m a total foodie (I will fly for food!), I obviously had to dive into the local cuisine. I personally feel like food reveals so much about a country, so it’s the ultimate way to immerse yourself in the culture. Taking a cooking class in Sierra Leone is hands down the best way to do it. Not only do you learn to whip up authentic dishes, but you also get a taste of the culture and traditions that go along with them. You can contact Susan Senesie for information on the cooking class at info@susansenesie.com. Fun fact: She cooks for Idris Elba when he’s visiting Sierra Leone. Enough said!
  • Visit Bunce Island – One of the most powerful moments of my trip was visiting Bunce Island, a major former slave port. Standing on this island, where countless Africans were forcibly taken from their homes and transported to the Americas, was a powerful and humbling experience – especially as an African American. You’ll need to visit with a guide so that you can learn about all of the historical details along with the importance of the island. It’s a place that carries a heavy history, and it’s impossible not to feel the weight of it while you’re there. It served as a stark reminder of the resilience and strength of my ancestors.
  • Relax on River Beach #2 – I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting to find such a pristine beach in this part of Sierra Leone. River Beach #2 was a pleasant surprise! Our guide hyped it up, and it definitely exceeded my expectations. With its soft white sand, clear water, and breathtaking views, it’s the perfect place to unwind and reflect on my entire trip. I highly recommend staying at The Place Resort at Tokeh Beach, as it was our favorite hotel stay the entire trip.
  • Take a Boat to Banana Island – Picture this: An untouched paradise where turquoise waters lap golden sand, tall palm trees swaying in the wind, and the smell of freshly grilled seafood fills the air. That’s Banana Island. We spent our few days boating along beautiful waters, hanging out in hammocks, snorkeling amongst coral reefs, hiking through lush rainforests, learning about this former slave port island, and feasting on the freshest seafood I’ve ever tasted. My favorite meals were had at Bafa Resort, and I couldn’t recommend dinner and drinks here more. Just don’t forget your sunscreen – the sun here is insanely intense!
  • Visit the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary – Have you ever looked into the eyes of a chimpanzee? It’s a truly humbling experience. These intelligent creatures share 99% of our DNA, and visiting them at the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary was a highlight of my trip. Admittedly, I thought that we would trek alongside the chimps like the gorilla treks that are done in Uganda. However, we quickly learned that this wouldn’t be the best idea after seeing how rowdy they could get! What were we thinking? Nonetheless, it was so heartwarming to watch them play and interact much like humans do. It was simply a reminder that we are all connected to the natural world, and we have a responsibility to protect these amazing animals and their habitats. Shoutout to Tacugama’s for their conservation efforts and their mission to provide a safe space to these incredible animals.

Things to know before you go:

  • You will need a passport AND a visa if you’re a US citizen. Give yourself plenty of time to get a visa before your arrival.
  • You will need a yellow fever vaccine to enter the country. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before your trip!
  • The local currency is the Leone (SLL). US dollars are widely accepted, but it’s advisable to carry cash as card payments are often unavailable. You will get a better value for your money if you convert your dollars into SLL, which I highly recommend.
  • English is the official language, but Kriol is widely spoken. You should have no trouble navigating with English, but it will help to learn some Kriol phrases.
  • The best time to visit Sierra Leone is during the dry season from November to April. I visited during the beginning of rainy season and there were showers periodically, but the rain would quickly pass.
  • Consult with your doctor about malaria medicine and carry an abundance of mosquito spray.
  • Bring plenty of sunscreen, a hat, and a portable fan as the heat can be very strong.
  • When it comes to safety, you should exercise caution and keep your valuables hidden. I would recommend traveling with a guide to navigate the country and culture with ease, especially as a solo traveler. I’m a huge advocate for solo travel, but Sierra Leone’s tourism infrastructure is still in development which means I would not recommend solo travel to most at this point of time.

Sierra Leone is a country of contrasts, where natural beauty meets complex history. It’s a place that will challenge your perceptions, open your heart, and leave you with memories that will last a lifetime. If you’re looking for an adventure that’s truly off the beaten path, Sierra Leone is waiting for you!

Okay, so I’ll be honest, when I told my friends I was heading to Sierra Leone, most of them wondered what I could possibly getting up to there. And honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect either. I knew very little about the country, but that’s exactly what intrigued me. Now, I have alot more to say and share about this West African country. It may be small, but allow me to share how Sierra Leone left a huge impression on me.

So, here’s the deal: Sierra Leone, or “Salone” as the locals call it, is this West African nation that most people probably couldn’t even point to on a map. But honestly, that’s part of its charm. It’s totally off-the-beaten-path, and that’s exactly what makes it so special.

An abundance of Natural Wonders

Calling all beach lovers! I can guarantee you that Leone’s coastline is highly likely to impress you. I’m talking golden sand beaches that are relatively untouched. We spent a few days lounging on the beach, sipping on fresh coconuts, and feasting on the most freshest sea food. Don’t even get me started on the lush rainforests and mountains surrounding the capital city.

One of my most memorable experiences was a cooking class on a rooftop in Freetown as the sun set over the city.

A beautiful blend of cultures and customs

I quickly learned that the culture in Sierra Leone is SO rich and diverse. There are over 16 different ethnic groups, each with its own unique traditions and languages. From the Mende to the Temne tribes, the people of Sierra Leone are warm, welcoming, and excited to share their unique traditions and perspectives. It was inspiring to see each ethnic group show pride for both their tribe along with Sierra Leone as a whole.

While English is the official language, Krio (Creole) is the most widely spoken. It’s a blend of English, Portuguese, and various African influences, which derives from a history of colonization. Nonetheless, it was pretty cool to recognize the ways in which their Krio language compares to other creole languages in the diaspora.

Amazing Animal Encounters

Sierra Leone is home to chimpanzees, which are basically our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. Although we watched them

interact from afar, visiting the Chimpanzee sanctuary was a total bucket-list moment for me. Not to mention, Sierra Leone is a hotspot for bird-watching and I witnessed some of the most unique lizards I’ve ever seen.

A complex history

As an African American, learning about the country’s role in the transatlantic slave trade certainly hit home. Visiting Bunce Island, one of the major slave castles, was incredibly sobering. It was a harsh reminder of Sierra Leone’s dark past that we can’t forget. Along with Bunce Island, there are a number of historic landmarks in remembrance of the transatlantic slave trade and they are a must-visit despite all of the challenges and emotions that come with it.

And the country’s rough past doesn’t stop there. Sierra Leone went through a brutal civil war in the 90s only ended in 1992 and it’s obviously left a huge impact on the country as it stands today. But what’s really inspiring is how the country is rebuilding and moving forward. You can still see the scars of the war, but Sierra Leone is teeming with so much hope and potential.

Tourism in Development

Now, let’s be real. Sierra Leone is still developing its tourism industry, so don’t expect the same level of luxury and convenience you might find in other places. Be prepared to go with the flow, embrace the unexpected, and maybe even rough it a little. This one’s for all my backpackers and true adventurers, those who want to fully immerse themselves in a new culture and step outside of their comfort zone!

So should you go?

Absolutely, especially if you want to be ahead of the curve. As you can now see, there’s a bit of something for everyone; endless natural beauty, a vibrant culture, a painful past yet hopeful future, tasty food, and so much more. Sierra Leone is a country that will challenge you, surprise you, and ultimately leave you feeling inspired by its resilience and potential for growth. It’s a place that’s still raw and authentic, and that’s what makes it so special.

A girls trip to the Dominican Republic? In Punta Cana? While staying at an incredible all inclusive resort? YES PLEASE! I’ll be sharing where to eat, stay, and play in this girls trip guide to Punta Cana

My best friend and I just got back from a girls’ trip in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic at Lopesan Costa Bavaro, and it was everything we needed and more.  Curious about where we stayed, what local delights we devoured, and all the exciting adventures we had at Lopesan Costa Bavaro? Allow me to take you on a virtual adventure!. Sit back, relax, and let me take you on a journey through the sun-soaked wonders of Punta Cana.

About The Dominican Republic

Punta Cana, a jewel in the Dominican Republic’s crown, graces the island’s eastern tip.  Picture this: turquoise waters, sugar-white sand beaches, a vibrant nightlife scene pulsating with energy(Fun fact: Bachata originated in the Dominican Republic), and a plethora of resorts catering to your every whim. Punta Cana is a Caribbean paradise waiting to be explored. The key? Staying at a resort that will be the perfect home away from home while you live your best life and Lopesan Costa Bavaro did indeed unlock some life-long memories for myself and my best friend. This girls trip guide to Punta Cana will give you the lowdown on how to make the absolute most of your trip!

High season is December through April with dry weather, fair temperatures due to seasonal trade winds. We visited in February and every local assured us that this was an incredible time to visit with moderate temperatures. The timing was impeccable!

Getting There and Entry Requirements

Since I’m based in Houston, Texas, I flew from Houston (IAH) to Miami (MIA) and then hopped a direct flight to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). The flight is quick and easy, plus there’s no time difference between Texas and the Dominican Republic, so jet lag wasn’t a major concern.

For US citizens, you’ll need a valid passport (and it shouldn’t expire within six months of your trip!). You don’t need a visa, and both entering and leaving the Dominican Republic requires purchasing a tourist card that can be obtained before you travel or at the airport.

Lopesan Costa Bavaro provides super convenient transportation from the airport to the resort and back, taking the stress out of navigating your way around.

Girls trip guide to Punta Cana: Where to Stay | Lopesan Costa Bavaro

Okay, so listen.  Picture this: you pull up to Lopesan Costa Bavaro, and bam!  We were greeted with champagne upon arrival and this truly set the tone for the rest of our stay.   This gorgeous resort, built just a couple years ago in 2019, is all about chic vibes and relaxation.  The rooms are super spacious and clean, just perfect for kicking back and unwinding.

I’ll admit, I’m not exactly a resort regular, but this place seriously redefined the experience for me.  Lopesan boasts incredible restaurants (we’ll get to that deliciousness in a sec!), daily yoga classes for my fellow yogis out there, and even a dedicated adults-only section where you’re searching for tranquility.  And oh man, the beach?  Imagine the most crystal-clear water you’ve ever seen lapping at the softest sand ever – it’s seriously like stepping into a postcard.

Girls trip guide to Punta Cana: Where to Play

Exhilarating ATV and Cave Jumping Excursion:  | An exhilarating four-wheeling excursion took us off-road through rugged terrain and included a frightening yet exciting jump into a crystal-clear cave. It was the perfect prelude to sipping coconuts and eating fried plantain on a picturesque beach.10/10 recommend!

Boozy Boat Party | After seeing the reviews, I knew I just had to book this. Think Caribbean cocktails, a sandbar stop, a perfect blend of Island and hip-hop jams, beautiful weather,  underwater snorkeling, and an infectious energy among a fun crowd of international travelers. Your girl was salsa dancing on board and talkin’ it up with fellow travelers in the ocean all at once.

Starting the day with breakfast and coffee at Bavaro Coffee within the resort and ending with dinner on-site provided ultimate convenience and returning to Lopesan Costa Bavaro each evening was truly the cherry on top.

And despite these off-resort adventures, the best part was coming ‘home’ to the comfort of Lopesan Costa Bavaro each day. Those looking to stay close to the resort will not be disappointed! I met plenty of travelers who never stepped foot off the resort and they were more than satisfied with their trip. It makes complete sense given that Lopesan Costa Bavaro is jam-packed with entertainment.

Don’t miss the various bars, including Chia Lounge, a speakeasy, an English pub, a Tequila Bar, Baco wine bar, and Coralino bar – all perfect for unwinding and meeting fellow travelers. From salsa dancing at the pavilion with a live band to sipping red wine at Baco wine bar to taking shots at the tequila bar, there were countless opportunities to connect with other travelers – which is my favorite thing about travel!  I even tried(and failed) my hand at bowling! Live performances at the theater,  drinks at the Coralino bar,  and a lively atmosphere across multiple bars made sure our evenings were always brimming with fun.

Girls trip guide to Punta Cana: Where and What to Eat

Foodies, get ready! Lopesan Costa Bavaro offers a taste of the Dominican Republic as part of the all-inclusive package. Make sure to indulge in some of these local delights at the Buffet Atlantico.

  • Mangu: Mashed plantains – a savory breakfast staple.
  • Tostones: Twice-fried plantains, my favorite crispy snack!
  • Empanadas: Savory pastries filled with meat, cheese, or veggies. A must try!
  • Habichuelas con Dulce: Suprisingly delicious sweet creamy beans.
  • Sancocho: A hearty stew often with seven types of meat (a national treasure).
  • La Bandera Dominicana: The ‘Dominican flag’ – rice, beans, and stewed meat.
  • Pastelón: A plantain casserole filled with savory goodness.
  • Pescado Frito: Whole fried fish, a coastal staple.

The Best of Both Worlds at Lopesan Costa Bavaro

For those days when you crave the resort’s ease and variety, Lopesan delivers with a wide variety of food options:

  • El Charro: My top pick for authentic, drool-worthy Mexican cuisine. Get the Pozole – trust me on this!
  • Mareas: A spot to savor fresh seafood dishes as you overlook the ocean.
  • Mediterraneo: Perfect for indulging in the vibrant flavors of the Mediterranean.
  • Inari: An exciting Japanese hibachi experience!
  • Buffet Atlantico: An international buffet that I enjoyed for breakfast and dinner.

In conclusion, my trip to Punta Cana was a dream come true, filled with unforgettable moments shared with my lifelong friend. As I said, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this resort but ya’ll know I’m all about switching it up and I was certainly rewarded.

From the seamless and convenient travel arrangements to the exceptional stay at Lopesan Costa Bavaro, every aspect of the trip exceeded my expectations. Exploring beyond the resort added an extra layer of adventure, allowing me to experience the best of both worlds. The flavors of the Dominican Republic, coupled with the all-inclusive perks at Lopesan Costa Bavaro, made the trip truly remarkable.

Y’all know I love to be on-the-go but this is why it felt so special to take it easy and soak up all the magic that the Dominican Republic has to offer. Whether you want relaxation or excitement, Punta Cana has it all. Lopesan Costa Bavaro is the perfect base for your Caribbean getaway!

As I embarked on my 3-month solo backpacking trip through Latin America, I knew that I wanted to challenge myself in every way possible. And what better way to push my limits than trekking to the ancient wonder of Machu Picchu in Peru? Little did I know that this experience would not only test me physically, mentally, and emotionally, but also leave me with a profound sense of achievement and connection.

Choosing the Right Tour Company: Action Peru Treks

I used to be the girl who couldn’t breathe after walking up a flight of stairs. I’d never describe exercise as “fun” or “enjoyable”, but I was determined to challenge myself mentally and physically after quitting my job to travel the world solo. Peru would be the last leg of my solo backpacking trip through Central & South America, so I knew that trekking Machu Picchu would prove to be the ultimate test. It would allow me to explore an ancient wonder while pushing my self-imposed physical limits. With my limited hiking experience and a boatload of hesitancy, I knew I needed a reliable team to guide me and ensure my safety.

Action Peru Treks: A Local Company With a Global Reputation

After completing a journey like trekking Machu Picchu, I can now say that choosing the right tour company can make all the difference. While my original tour company has since closed its doors, I’ve stumbled upon a true gem: Action Peru Treks.

Action Peru Treks is an authentic and local company specializing in the Inca trail. Any trail that you’re interested in trekking? They’ve got it! Beyond the trail, they’ve cultivated a team of local guides that embody Peruvian culture and hospitality, each carrying a minimum of five years of experience in. They mostly recruit from the Sacsayhuaman community, where they’ve even built a robust roof for the school.

Whether you’re up for the classic 4 day Inca Trail or prefer a shorter version, Action Peru Treks offers a wide range of locally led treks that are tailored to different fitness levels, time constraints, and personal preferences. There’s something for everyone!

The Trails: A Glimpse into the Adventure

With Peru being home to one of the seven wonders of the world, you likely know about the legendary Inca Trail. And after completing the trek to Machu Picchu for myself across 4-days and 3 nights, I must say that my expectations completely exceeded reality. This beautiful yet challenging journey through the Andes Mountains proved to be the perfect blend of culture, nature, and adventure.
Action Peru Treks offers a diverse range of treks, each with their own appeal. Drawing from my own memorable experience, here are three interesting trek options offered by Action Peru Treks:

● The Ancascocha Trek to Machu Picchu is a 5 day 4 night tour that’s perfect for those seeking a lesser-known yet challenging trail.

● The Short Inca Trail is the way to go for a shorter but equally impactful journey, boasting all the Machu Picchu highlights in a compact 2-day,1-night adventure.

● The Classic Inca Trail is the OG 4-day, 3-night pilgrimage for those who want to immerse themselves in the history, grandeur, and spirituality of the Inca civilization. The Classic Inca Trail will transport you back in time and quite literally take your breath away.

With so many options to choose from, you better believe I’ll be returning to conquer a new trail with Action Peru Treks on my return to Peru. But first, let me share my personal journey through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to Machu Picchu.

An Exciting Yet Anxious Start

Excitement and anxiety mingled as I prepared for the 16-mile trek. I’d promised myself I’d train, but let’s be real, that never happened. The night before, I stuffed my pack with liters of water and layered clothing, giving myself mental pep talks as doubts swirled through my mind. Did I pack the right things? Would I be able to keep up with the group? Why on earth did I sign up for this? But At that point, I was just relieved that I wasn’t doing this alone.

When pre-hike jitters hit hard, I quickly realized that having the support of a group tour like Action Peru Treks makes all the difference. While you’ll certainly be full of excitement, you may feel equally as overwhelmed when it comes to planning.

Action Peru Treks’ website is a treasure trove of information, with detailed descriptions of each trek, what’s included, what to pack, and even reviews from fellow travelers who have conquered those trails before you. Before booking, you can take a look at the daily itinerary, hiking altitude, average distance, and duration. Action Peru Treks lays everything out from the jump so that you know exactly what you’re signing up for. The site is your one-stop-shop for everything you need to know about guided treks in Peru – even the vibrant Rainbow Mountain which I also conquered on my Peru trip. Not to mention, the local guides that will have your back on the ground. You’ll receive a personal porter, a group porter, and a professional cook to stay fueled up on the go. Those hot meals hit different after a long day on the trails. Trust me when I say, this support makes all the difference.

Doubts Turned to Determination

Hiking to 4,450 meters was daunting. Within 15 minutes, I questioned my sanity. Thin air and tightening muscles made me doubt my ability to last three days without a mule. But the porters reassured me, and I took frequent breaks. I wasn’t leading the pack, but they always stuck by my side. Their support was invaluable.

I looked around at my fellow trekkers and guides, realizing that if they could do it, so could I. With each passing day, I trusted my body more. By day two, I was dancing on the trail! Despite wanting to quit multiple times, I felt both physically and mentally empowered.

I gotta keep it real and say that I would have been on the struggle bus without the team. Action Peru Treks offers experienced local porters who speak Spanish, English, and often Quechua. They’ll watch out for you, guide you, and lift you up when you need it most.

An Amazement of Natural Wonders

As we trekked through the Sacred Valley, I marveled at the cascading waterfalls, breathtaking sunrises, and the way I quickly connected with both strangers and myself.

For three days, I was free from my phone and most of my belongings, a rarity in the 21st century. I savored the simple things I rarely see in my daily life: the foliage underfoot, the cool breeze on my face, the snow-capped mountains in the distance, the constant stream of water, and the nearby villagers going about their day.

An experienced operator like Action Peru Treks takes care of everything, from meals and navigation to gear and transport, so you can kick back(well…with a bit of hiking) and simply enjoy the Sacred Valley’s natural beauty.

Picture yourself atop a mountain, gazing at the stunning scenery, free from the distractions of everyday life and at peace with nature.

Accomplishment and Reflections

Reaching Machu Picchu was no easy feat, let me tell you. Three days of tough terrain and a rollercoaster of emotions. But you know what? It was a total triumph. The journey itself was just as transformative as the destination. I discovered a strength in me that I never knew existed, both physically and mentally. The trek left me feeling accomplished and inspired, a reminder of what we are capable of when we push our boundaries and have support in our corner.

The Trek to Machu Picchu was undoubtedly the highlight of my solo trip through Latin America. It pushed me beyond my self-imposed limits and allowed me to grow both mentally and physically. The journey reminded me of the power of perseverance and the profound connection we can forge with nature, ourselves, and those around us.

If you’re considering trekking Machu Picchu, I wholeheartedly recommend choosing a tour company like Action Peru Treks. The right operator that will enhance your journey, enabling you to create lasting memories and discover the true magic of this ancient wonder. Embrace the challenge, soak up the beauty of the Andes, and prepare to be transformed.

My only regret? Missing out on Action Peru Trek’s cultural immersion program. With this, you can sign up for a home stay at your guide’s home where you’ll savor a traditional Andean meal and sleep over before taking off on your trek in the morning. Ultimately, you’ll learn more about their agricultural way of life in a way that most tourists never will.

I’m already counting down the days until I can finally return to Peru and dive even deeper into the Andean culture and way of life.

Tips for Trekking Machu Picchu with Action Peru Treks

● Book your trek in advance, especially if you’re traveling during peak season. You can book directly on the Action Peru Treks website.

● Train for the trek before you go. Machu Picchu is located at a high altitude, so it’s important to be in good physical condition. Arrive a few days early to acclimate. You can get an idea of the daily difficulty level on the Action Peru Treks in order to train appropriately. Hopefully you’ll prep better than I did!

● Pack for all types of weather. The weather in the Andes Mountains can be unpredictable, so it’s important to be ready for anything. You can find a packing list on the Action Peru Treks website.

● Live your best life!

Why isn’t anyone talking about the Southern Illinois Wine Trail?

This thought rang through my head as I drove through vast corn fields that go as far as the eye could see. I could also see long stretches of vineyards, apple trees, sunflower fields, and peach farms scattered throughout. I drove down the quiet streets of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail with my windows down, hearing nothing but strong gusts of wind and my road trip tunes playing aloud. With minimal noise or crowds, it felt like ultimate relaxation, and it was exactly what I needed.

I already had a pretty good impression of Illinois from a previous trip to Chicago, but I didn’t know what to expect from Southern Illinois. Despite being less than a 3-hour flight from Houston and a 1-hour flight from Chicago, I hadn’t heard much about this part of the state.

Fortunately, Enjoy Illinois invited me to explore the Shawnee Wine Trail and discover all that Southern Illinois had to offer. The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail is 40-miles long and consists of eleven wineries along Highway 127 and 51. Most visit for the wineries but the area offers much more for those looking to explore further. From U-pick apple and peach farms to pumpkin patches, sunflower fields and more. Then there’s the sprawling forests that cover the region, like Shawnee National Forest, which spans 289,000 acres. Oh and we’re just getting started. This article will guide you on a journey that will showcase the best of Southern Illinois and the Shawnee Hills for your future roadtrip. Ready? Let’s get into it!

All About the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois

There are 11 wineries in the Shawnee Hills:

Alto Vineyards

Blue Sky Vineyard

Feather Hills Vineyard & Winery

Hickory Ridge Vineyard

Honker Hill Winery

Kite Hill Vineyards

Owl Creek Vineyard

Peachbarn Winery & Café

Pomona Winery

StarView Vineyards

Von Jakob Winery & Brewery

When to Visit the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois:

I visited during the month of September when the weather was quite literally perfect—mid-70s to mid-80s. We often felt like we had the whole place to ourselves, which was sublime. While the summer months are certainly warmer, the weather is still incredible at a high of 90 degrees. In Summer you’ll experience more crowds, but this also means businesses will have longer hours and there will be more events throughout the area. Surprisingly, the winters are relatively mild with an average temperature around 50 degrees. So why visit in the winter? Well, you can receive discounts with the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail Passport Program. This program is only $20 and you’ll save with winter specials on food, wine, and more!

While I couldn’t have been more pleased with the perfectly warm weather we experienced at the end of September, I would have loved to see the changing of the leaves in October or the sunflowers in full bloom during early Spring. Plan accordingly based on your interests!

How to Get Around the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois:

I rented a car to explore the region, which gave me the freedom to make stops wherever my heart desired. Alternatively, you can book a seat on the Shawnee Shuttle, which will include pick-up/drop-off from your accommodation and a trip coordinator to help you map out the ultimate itinerary.

Where to Stay on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois

While there aren’t a huge number of major hotel chains on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, there are certainly some unique bed and breakfast options.

Davie School Inn

We stayed in a former public school! Yes, you heard that right! Davie School Inn is a unique B&B that was once a public school in Anna, Illinois. While the building has been refurbished into a modern hotel, there are still visible remnants of the 1900s school in the gymnasium, classrooms, and other areas of the building. The owners, Tammy & Lyle, are extremely welcoming and make a mean breakfast. You’ll have a homemade spread delivered to your room each morning and it’s just as amazing as it sounds. The cinnamon rolls are to die for, and I don’t say this lightly—we both agreed that they’re the best we’ve ever had. Don’t believe me? Go and see… or taste for yourself. Davie School Inn is full of quirks and it’s clear why it’s rated five stars on Google.

Historic Hull House Inn

As you drive further down the trail towards Murphysboro, you’ll find the charming Historic Hull House Inn. This Victorian-era inn was built in 1887 and was once the home of William H. Hull. There are three different quarters onsite and the property is set just outside of Shawnee National Forest. The Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places and I was in awe of the historic architecture. It felt pretty amazing to be staying in a piece of history. I don’t get that experience often in Texas.

Where to Drink on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois

You’ll have plenty of wineries to fill your itinerary as you venture through the region (see above), but here are my recommendations:

Hickory Ridge Vineyard – This winery was the highlight of our trip! It’s homey and quaint, while leaving a lasting impression. With the rolling vineyards and vine-covered patio, you’ll feel right at home. The stunning scenery is accompanied by a superb selection of dry wines. I ordered a flight to sample the best of the best and I was not disappointed. “Sip” back, relax, and enjoy the views!

Alto Vineyards – This is one of the more well-known and frequently visited wineries on the wine trail, and that’s for good reason. It is the oldest and has won the most awards of them all. The server recommended their award-winning Chambourcin, which is a signature red wine in the region. This was one of the many wines I tasted in my sampler and let’s just say I was more than pleased. Oh, and I may be stating the obvious here, but you absolutely must order a charcuterie board alongside your wine flight.

Blue Sky Vineyard – Tuscany or Southern Illinois? You’ll definitely feel like you’re in Italy at the beautiful Blue Sky Vineyard. You can even stay in a suite at the vineyard if a tasting just isn’t enough. Who else could say that they woke up to vineyard views this week? Because I certainly can!

Where to Play on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois

Explore Shawnee National Forest

You’ll have the opportunity to wander through nearly 300,000 acres of land at this national forest.

  • My personal favorite stop? The Garden of The Gods. A local told me that this was an absolute must see, so we had to take his word for it. It lived up to the hype, and I must admit that it exceeded my expectations for natural wonders in Southern Illinois! If you don’t do anything else (aside from wine sipping), visit the Garden of the Gods.

  • Another must-see? Giant City State Park. You’ll hike through greenery and slither through bluffs during your adventure. You can explore by foot or even horseback!

Other places to visit inside the Shawnee National Forest?

Pomona Natural Bridge

Little Grand Canyon

Jackson Falls

Burden Falls

Sand Cave

Get High at Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour

If you’re in need of an adrenaline rush, look no further than Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour. You’ll conquer eight zip lines across 83 wooded acres. The guides will provide safety instructions, and they’ll teach you about the ecology of the area. As someone who is always chasing the next thrill, this was exactly what I needed.

Head To The Orchards

Go apple and peach tasting at Rendleman Orchards and Flamm Orchards. The peaches at Rendleman Orchards give Georgia peaches a run for their money. Don’t leave without tasting the peach cobbler! Flamm Orchards will serve you up the best apple pie of your life. We even brought a bag of apples back on the flight! If that doesn’t tell you how amazing their product is, well, then I’m not sure how else to convince you.

Where To Eat On The Shawnee Hills Trail in Southern Illinois

You can certainly eat at the wineries and orchards along the trail, but here are a few food recommendations if you want to switch things up:

17th Street BarbecueThis BBQ joint is said to have the best ribs in the U.S., but the sides are highly underrated. The fried pickles and the baked beans are the best I’ve ever had, and this is coming from a Texan, where BBQ is a staple.

Faye Coffee Shop Faye offers light bites and quality coffee inside a refurbished century-old building. While the building may be historic, you’d never know with its sleek interior design. It’s right across from Historic Hull House Inn in Murphysboro (previously mentioned).

Grafton Winery and BrewhausThis is a bit further out in Grafton, but it’s a great stop for the beer lovers who might need a break from wine. Enjoy some German bites and craft beer as you soak up the Southern Illinois vibes on the restaurant rooftop. Okay, okay, if you haven’t had enough wine, you can order wine that is sourced from their winery too. Live music is often offered on weekends, so be sure to check their Facebook page to keep an eye on events.

I wish I could say “That’s All Folks!”, but there’s so much to do with so little time. As I always say, I’ll have to return for more. Ideally, I’d return when the sunflower fields are in full bloom and the peaches are ripe for pickin’! Another trip, another U.S. gem that has taken me by surprise. You can’t go wrong with the perfect balance of relaxation and exploration. Whether you’re passing through on a roadtrip or planning a dedicated stay along the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, be sure to make the most of your trip with this guide. “‘Wine’ not?” You won’t be disappointed.

Hey Ciara

You Need To Know How To Get To Tulum

Did you know that you can’t fly directly into Tulum? You should know that Tulum is two hours away from Cancun. The closest airport to Tulum is 2 hours away, so you’ll need to fly into Cancun. Once you’ve flown into Cancun, you’ll need to find a way to get from the airport to Tulum. You have three options:

  1. Private/group transfer Shuttle – You can book a private transfer shuttle as a group or you can join a shuttle as an individual. You can arrange this ahead of time and this might feel safer than jumping into a random taxi once you land.

  2. Taxi – This is by far the most expensive option. Once you step outside of the Cancun airport, you’ll be swarmed by taxi drivers. If you take a taxi, you can expect to pay between $60-$100 to get to Tulum. You can attempt to negotiate the price, but you’ll likely be paying close to $100.

  3. ADO bus – This is your cheapest option. You’ll pay about $10 for a ride to Tulum. You can either book a bus that stops in Playa Del Carmen and transfers to Tulum or you can book a direct bus to Tulum. You can find an ADO bus kiosk in the airport alongside the rental car kiosks as you exit the airport OR you can pay for your ticket outside near the bus stop. After riding the ADO bus for years across Mexico, I can say that they are clean and completely safe.

  4. Rental Car – A rental car will offer you plenty of flexibility in Tulum and nearby towns. I advise booking your rental car ahead of time. During high season, you should book the rental car directly through the company(I.e. Hertz, Avis) website as opposed to a third-party site (Expedia, Skyscanner, etc.)

You Need To Know How Exchange Money

While many places in Tulum certainly accept US dollars, you’ll need to know how to exchange your money to the local currency – Pesos. Skip the currency exchange kiosk in the airport. You’ll get the best exchange rate by withdrawing money from a local ATM once you arrive in Mexico.  You can withdraw cash from a local bank in the airport, in Cancun, or once you arrive in Tulum. Tulum Centro/pueblo is the best place to withdraw cash in Tulum as the ATMs in the hotel zone often run out of money.

Many businesses in Tulum accept credit cards, but you’ll need pesos for taxi rides, taco stands, excursions, etc. It’s also wise to carry cash in order to tip taxi drivers, servers, housekeepers, or anyone who provides a service/assistance during your trip. This goes a long way, especially now.

As a heads up, local businesses will charge you more if you do decide to use US dollars instead of Pesos.

You Need To Know Where Stay In Tulum

There are two sides to Tulum: the Tulum hotel zone and Tulum Centro.

Tulum Hotel Zone is full of villas, treehouses, & boutique hotels with direct access to the beach. It’s expensive AF but you’ll have direct beach access. Many hotels in the hotel zone don’t offer A/C during the daytime and the internet is all but non-existent. If you find yourself in the hotel zone, you’ll need to use hotel and restaurant wifi to stay connected.

Tulum Centro is an affordable area to stay and it’s about 10-15 minutes driving distance from the beach.  This is where the locals live and as a result, you’ll have a much more ‘local’ experience in the area.

Alternatively, Aldea Zama is a new development area in Tulum which is about a 5 minute drive from the beach. It’s directly between Tulum Centro and the Hotel Zone. You’ll find plenty of nice Airbnb’s to book in the area, which are great for large groups!

You Need To Know That Tulum Is Not A Resort Town

Unlike Cancun, Tulum is not a resort town. While the town changed tremendously, the original appeal of the town was it’s laid-back atmosphere and bungalow/boutique hotel vibe. There are plenty of boutique hotels, bungalow, and villas that have gone above & beyond to curate that bohemian vibe that Tulum is known for. Not to mention, the insane amount of resteraunts along the hotel zone with much better food than resort food. Trust me when I say, you won’t regret staying at a stunning bungalow in the hotel zone OR a sick airbnb in Tulum Centro. The options are endless.

There is only resort that is currently in Tulum is Kore Tulum. Other than that, you’ll need to drive 20-30 minutes outside of town to get to Dreams Tulum. Know that you’ll pay $50-$100 ONE WAY to get to the Tulum ruins, beach, and hotel zone if you decided to stay outside of town.

You Need To Know What To Pack

Ladies, leave your heels at home. The hotel zone is one long, rocky dirt road and you don’t want to twist an ankle or break a heel in that mud. I’ve seen it happen before.

The style in Tulum is very beachy, bohemian. Pack plenty of bikinis along with loose clothing for the daytime. Bring a few cute dresses to bar hop at night along with sandals.

The heat/humidity is on 100. Not too different than Houston, but it can be a lot of you’re not used to it, so be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen!

Do not forget the bugspray. The mosquitos in Tulum are from another planet. Better safe than sorry!

If you’re in need of anything, you can find anything you need at the Super-Aki(local supermarket) along with pharmacy’s in town. If you get sick, you should know that you don’t need a prescription to pick up medication in town.

You Need To Know When How To Get Around

Prior to leaving, you should decide how you plan to get around Tulum. If you choose not to rent a car, you should know that taxi costs can really add up. If you don’t plan to stay in the hotel zone, you will be paying for a taxi everytime you go to the beach or a restaurant in the area. While you don’t need a car in Tulum, it’s certainly more convenient to explore the town and surrounding areas. Traffic is pretty bad at nighttime and during holidays in the hotel zone, so you can expect to pay a lot for a taxi and/or wait up to an hour in traffic to get to your destination.

You Need To Know Where To Eat

You’ll have the opportunity to eat your heart out in Tulum, but first you need to make reservations. If you plan to eat at the best restaurants in the hotel zone – particularly on a weekend trip – you’ll need to book a table ahead of time. I recommend downloading the opentable app to make reservations or emailing/calling the resteraunt to book directly.

You Need To Know When To Go SightSeeing

When it comes to visiting ruins or cenotes, you’ll need to arrive close to open or closing time to have some peace without tour crowds. You can visit cenotes or ruins with a tour group, but it will be cheaper to pay directly at the door. If you’re curious about booking day trips in the area, you can book via viator or airbnb experiences.

You Need To Know That Tulum Is Not Cheap

While you can certainly do Tulum on a budget, the prices in the hotel zone rival New York and Las Vegas prices. If you plan to stay along the hotel zone, drink craft cocktails alongside hipsters, and party in Instagram-worthy beach clubs, be prepared to spend a pretty penny. The Tulum Hotel Zone is one of the most expensive areas in the entire country.

You Need To Know How To Do Tulum On A Budget

As I stated above, Tulum is a place where you can splurge OR save. It just depends on how you decide to travel. You can stay at a nice airbnb or hostel in Tulum centro on a for less than $30 a night. You can bike or take a collective bus to the beach for less than $10 a day. You can enjoy local street food for less than $5 a plate and enjoy cheap drinks at a variety of bars in Tulum Centro. You can get to and from Tulum using the ADO bus for less than $10 a day. If you go with a group, you can split a dope Airbnb for less than $50 a person. If you plan ahead, Tulum doesn’t have to be so expensive.

You Need To Know That Tulum Has Changed

I visited Tulum for the first time 5 years and I’ll be the first to tell you that Tulum has changed. You need to know that Tulum is not the low-key, unknown beach destination that it once was. There’s a Starbucks, there’s plenty of traffic, and it can get extremely busy in the high season. Despite it’s rapid growth, I still adore the area. If you manage your expectations, you can have an great time.

I can’t emphasize how long I’ve been waiting to visit Charleston, South Carolina. I’d heard that the city was rich in history, culture, and charm. I’d heard that architecture would make me feel like I stepped back in time and that the food would quite literally make my mouth water. I’d heard this from so many people that I knew I had to go see for myself. Just a few years ago I visited South Carolina for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the Lowcountry – Beaufort, Daufuskie Island, and Hilton Head to be exact. I was simply counting down the days until my return so that I could finally see what all the Charleston hype was about. I was ecstatic when Discover South Carolina invited me to visit at the top of 2022. The timing was perfect, so I couldn’t have said yes quicker. I am now back from a 4-day/3-night trip to Charleston and I’m here to share the (sweet) tea! Before we dive into everything I got up to, here are some things you should know about the ‘Holy City’(one of the city’s many nicknames):

  • The first public US public college, theatre, museum, and golf club were established in Charleston. The city is full of history!

  • The pineapple symbol that you see displayed on buildings around the city represents hospitality. The Southern hospitality that permeates the city is REAL!

  • The state of South Carolina produces more peaches than Georgia. The more you learn!

  • Charleston’s Angel Oak Tree is one of the oldest living trees in the US – 500 years to be exact!

  • Sweetgrass baskets are South Carolina’s official handicraft and you can shop for these cultural souvenirs at the Charleston City Market

Now that we’ve got the basics covered, let’s get into this weekend guide for your trip to Charleston!

Where To Stay In Charleston

I was fortunate enough to stay in the pretty and (very)pink Mills House Wyndham Hotel. Pink is my absolute favorite color, so I thought the hotel was stunning. The architecture is reflective of the vintage allure that radiates through the cobblestone streets of Charleston. The Mills House was built in 1853 and the hotel just steps away from the city’s most historic sites. It’s full of amenities like a fitness center, a pool, a business center, and an onsite restaurant. You’re only .2 miles from the Charleston City Market, 315 feet from the Gibbes Museum of Art, 1.1 miles from the Aiken Rhett House, and .9 miles from the Charleston Museum. That’s just the beginning. Now that you know where you’re staying, let’s get into things to do on your visit.

What To Do In Charleston

Shop For Souvenirs At The Charleston City Market – You cannot go to Charleston without strolling through the historic Charleston City Market. Established in the 1970s, there are four long blocks for you to shop your heart out. What would I recommend picking up? Sweetgrass handicrafts! Sweetgrass basket-weaving is a cultural skill that has been passed down through Gullah culture from generation to generation. I got to meet Corey Alston who is a direct ancestor of the Gullah Geechee family and he demonstrated the process of basket weaving. His stall is set up at the very front of the market and his baskets are artfully crafted. Not to mention, he’ll share a wealth of info on the history and craft of Sweetgrass basket-weaving!!

Go Casual Crabbing With TiaCharleston is known for fresh seafood and this is a unique yet quintessential way to get hands-on with all that’s under the sea. Tia Clark is native to the city and she will show you how to cast a net, set bait, fish, and catch crabs. I hope you have more luck than I did with crab catching, but I can assure you that you’ll enjoy stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new. This is the ultimate way to experience a different side of Charleston that most tourists miss. Plus, Tia is just amazing! There’s a reason why Airbnb hand-selected her experience and story as one of the best on the platform.

Relax at The Battery & White Point Gardens  – If you’re looking for a peaceful spot to relax, then you’ve gotta visit The Battery & White Point Gardens. This site was once a public garden and it even served as a fortification for the city during the civil war. You’ll be able to witness historical structures throughout the park along with an incredible view of Charleston Harbor. Soak up the sun, smell the salt water, feel the saltwater breeze against your skin, and sit under the giant oak trees that line the park.

Learn about Black History At The Boone Hall PlantationIt’s impossible to deny the horrors that were once inflicted upon enslaved African-Americans on plantations across the south, but it’s equally important to understand what took place at places like the Boone Hall Plantation. While sobering, it is a moving depiction of the life of an enslaved person. Don’t leave without seeing a live presentation of Gullah Culture from a third-generation Gullah who was born in South Carolina!

Admire THE Angel Oak Tree Drive out to Kiawah Island to witness one of the oldest living trees in the US – over 500 years to be exact! South Carolina is already known for its gorgeous Spanish Moss and Palmetto Trees, but this one takes the cake! The tree is 65 feet tall and the limbs are quite literally grazing the ground. Don’t take it from me though! The Angel Oak Tree is a natural wonder that you must see for yourself!

Tour The Aiken Rhett HouseThe Aiken Rhett House demonstrates the stark contrast between the lives of slave owners and the enslaved whom lived under the same roof yet within entirely different realities. You’ll take a self-guided tour through the home and get a unique look at one of the best-preserved homes in the US since the 1830s.

Roam Rainbow Row – Rainbow Row just might be the most picture-perfect neighborhoods I’ve seen in the US! Before you get to the Battery, you’ll walk through a community of pastel-colored and cobblestoned streets wth homes that date back to the 1740s. Don’t forget to be camera ready! You’ll definitely want to snap a few photos!

This should be more than enough to fill your weekend, but you can also take a ghost tour, drink your way through the local craft beer scene, go to the Gibbes Museum of Art, lounge on the beautiful beaches, and bop around King Street! Needless to say, you certainly won’t be bored in Charleston!

What To Eat In Charleston

  • Enjoy Rooftop Vibes at The Watch – Catch the best views of Charleston while sipping on brunch cocktails at the Watch. Get the roasted pimento cheese dip – thank me later!

  • Let’s Taco ‘bout Mesu! What sounds better than  Sushi and Mexican fusion at a black-owned restaurant right on King’s Street? I’ll wait!

  • Nothing beats a Southern breakfast and Miller’s All Day has you covered. The biscuits and gravy are truly some of the best I’ve ever tried. And don’t forget to check out the 175-year-old mill in the front of the store as proof that Miller’s All Day is producing some of the best grits around!

  • Slip into Chez Nous for a dining experience like no other! You’ll eat from a daily-changing menu while sitting inside of an intimate, candle-lit home.

  • Nobody does Barbecue like South Carolina and that’s coming from a Texan! Rodney Scott’s is no exception! We’re talking about a James Beard award winner and chef that has been featured by the likes of Anthony Bourdain. Need I say more?

  • Grab a glass of wine to the sounds of live jazz music at The Graft. It’s good vibes only at this black-owned wine bar!

  • Chow down on hand-made biscuits at Callie’s hot Biscuits! These are undoubtedly some of the best biscuits I’ve ever had in my life. And don’t even get me started on the Grits! I had the pleasure of making biscuits with the founder Carrie and she is incredibly inspiring. While Charleston is Callie’s founding location, It’s easy to see why she’s expanded to markets like Atlanta and Charlotte.

  • Grab some speciality goodies to go at Caviar & Bananas! Consider gathering some local snacks for a picnic at Battery Park!

  • Get Gullah at Gillie’s Seafood! Every Gullah I met said I couldn’t leave without tasting some soul food & traditional Gullah cuisine at Gillie’s. As a lover of soul food, I knew I had to visit and I wasn’t disappointed. Show up with an empty stomach because Gillie’s will fill your belly & soul.

  • Eat brunch inside of a refurbished cathedral at Church and Union! The property is one-of-a-kind and the food is just as special.

There’s no shortage of places to eat in Charleston. Make reservations to secure a spot at some of the best spots in town! Regardless of where you choose to dine, there are certain Southern classics that you must try like Grits, Fried Green Tomatoes, and She-Crab soup! Thank me later!

Have I convinced you yet? This is definitely the most dynamic US city that I’ve visited in a long time! As a traveler with an abundance of interests, Charleston ticked every box. From tasty food to exciting adventures to ample history, it undoubtedly lived up to the hype. Whether you want to take a family trip, travel solo, or bring your girls on a bachelorette trip, you’re bound to have a fantastic time! Get yourself to Charleston ASAP so you can see what the hype is all about! Have I steered you wrong yet?

Ever been to Charleston?? If so, share your recs below!

So you’re headed to Puerto Rico and you need some things to do? I’ve got you! I’ve visited countless times and I still believe that Puerto Rico is an incredible travel destination for everyone but especially US Citizens. When people ask me where they should travel WITHOUT a passport, I always recommend this Caribbean island. The best part? There’s no US passport needed. It was a no-brainer for me years ago before having much international travel experience due to the ease of access, while also having the ability to dive into a new culture. Needless to say, you’re in store for a great time. Here are some things you can do on your trip to Puerto Rico:

1. Go Horseback Riding at Campo Rico Ranch

We galloped through lush green farmland on this famous ranch where famous movies like Fast & Furious have been shot. I felt like a kid again as I rode through cornfields under the island sun. You can book ziplining and four-wheeling at the same ranch!

2. Take Foodie Tour Through Old San Juan

No better way to discover a place than through its food right? Ate my way all the way through old San Juan while learning about the history of the Island. Learned how to make Mofongo, enjoyed some tasty Mallorca sandwiches, and devoured the mango popsicle/paleta you see in the video here. You can’t miss Senor Paletas!

3. Have A Rum Experience

I got the chance to taste the rum and sip on cocktails in both classic and hidden gems throughout old San Juan on a cocktail tour. I’m a sucker for a good cocktail so this was the oneeeeeeee! If you’re going to visit the Bacardi Factory, be sure to plan ahead! I missed out because there was no availability when I arrived.

4. Go Island Hopping via Catamaran

I’ve been to both Culebra and Icacos Island vía catamaran on separate trips to PR. If you ask me, I personally preferred Icacos! However, both islands are gorg and worth the day trip! If you book the right one, you’ll get unlimited rum punch along with lunch onboard!

5. Venture out to Cueva Ventana

Which is a large cave in a limestone cliff out in Aricebe, Puerto Rico. The views are everything and this is definitely more off the beaten path!

6. Take a Foodie Tour

Wander the streets of Old San Juan while tasting traditional foods like the Mallorca, Mofongo, Tostones, lechón a la vara, Mallorca, and Arroz con Habichuelas with every single meal. Make a stop at Veradura, one of my Favorite restaurants in old San Juan.

7. Listen to La Bomba Music

If you’re looking for Afro- Puerto Rican music and culture, then La Bomba music might interest you!  Check out Terraza de Bonanza to experience the lively sounds of La Bomba!

8. Go Salsa Dancing

Salsa dancing to live music at la factoría on Monday nights(once rated top bar in the world, has 3 diff rooms and the backroom is live Salsa on certain nights). If you don’t know where to start, take salsa lessons! When In Puerto Rico, right?

9. Explore El Yunque Rainforest

Get ready to soak or dive(if you’re feeling adventurous)  into Puerto Rico’s National rainforest. El Yunque is rich in biodiversity and there’s no shortage of waterfalls throughout this massive rainforest. It’s absolutely worth the visit and it will give you a chance to discover Puerto Rico’s natural beauty! You can rent a car and visit the park for free. If you don’t have a car, you’ll need to book a day tour that included transportation. Get there early to beat the crowds and do some waterfall jumping if you get the opportunity!

10. Go Partying at La Placita(Plaza del Mercado)

There are several streets of markets & restaurants that turn into bars at night. SO much fun! We wanted to go back each night, *best nights are Thursday & Friday*

11. Stroll through Santurce

The Santurce neighborhood in San Juan is closer to the beach, street art, and yummy food. Check out La Placita(where market stalls basically transform into a block party by night), street art, and Lote 23(a fairly new food truck park) while you’re in the neighborhood.

12. You can book excursions using Get Your Guide, Trip Advisor, or Airbnb Experiences.

These are invaluable resources for booking with local companies via a trustworthy website where you can read reviews. They’re also ideal for solo travelers to join a group and meet new people. If you don’t rent a car, these sites will make it possible for you to discover more of the island without running up an Uber tab.

13. Kayak the Bioluminescence Bay

Ever seen sparkly plankton particles glow in the sea at dark? It’s pretty cool! If you visit during the right season, you’ll be able to see the water sparkle!

14. More than anything, just explore!

Wander the streets and talk to as many locals as possible to really get a feel for the city. With everything that we did, we still didn’t scratch the surface in San Juan!
