I can’t emphasize how long I’ve been waiting to visit Charleston, South Carolina. I’d heard that the city was rich in history, culture, and charm. I’d heard that architecture would make me feel like I stepped back in time and that the food would quite literally make my mouth water. I’d heard this from so many people that I knew I had to go see for myself. Just a few years ago I visited South Carolina for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the Lowcountry – Beaufort, Daufuskie Island, and Hilton Head to be exact. I was simply counting down the days until my return so that I could finally see what all the Charleston hype was about. I was ecstatic when Discover South Carolina invited me to visit at the top of 2022. The timing was perfect, so I couldn’t have said yes quicker. I am now back from a 4-day/3-night trip to Charleston and I’m here to share the (sweet) tea! Before we dive into everything I got up to, here are some things you should know about the ‘Holy City’(one of the city’s many nicknames):

 • The first public US public college, theatre, museum, and golf club were established in Charleston. The city is full of history!

 • The pineapple symbol that you see displayed on buildings around the city represents hospitality. The Southern hospitality that permeates the city is REAL!

 • The state of South Carolina produces more peaches than Georgia. The more you learn!

 • Charleston’s Angel Oak Tree is one of the oldest living trees in the US – 500 years to be exact!

 • Sweetgrass baskets are South Carolina’s official handicraft and you can shop for these cultural souvenirs at the Charleston City Market

Now that we’ve got the basics covered, let’s get into this weekend guide for your trip to Charleston!

Where To Stay In Charleston

I was fortunate enough to stay in the pretty and (very)pink Mills House Wyndham Hotel. Pink is my absolute favorite color, so I thought the hotel was stunning. The architecture is reflective of the vintage allure that radiates through the cobblestone streets of Charleston. The Mills House was built in 1853 and the hotel just steps away from the city’s most historic sites. It’s full of amenities like a fitness center, a pool, a business center, and an onsite restaurant. You’re only .2 miles from the Charleston City Market, 315 feet from the Gibbes Museum of Art, 1.1 miles from the Aiken Rhett House, and .9 miles from the Charleston Museum. That’s just the beginning. Now that you know where you’re staying, let’s get into things to do on your visit.

What To Do In Charleston

Shop For Souvenirs At The Charleston City Market – You cannot go to Charleston without strolling through the historic Charleston City Market. Established in the 1970s, there are four long blocks for you to shop your heart out. What would I recommend picking up? Sweetgrass handicrafts! Sweetgrass basket-weaving is a cultural skill that has been passed down through Gullah culture from generation to generation. I got to meet Corey Alston who is a direct ancestor of the Gullah Geechee family and he demonstrated the process of basket weaving. His stall is set up at the very front of the market and his baskets are artfully crafted. Not to mention, he’ll share a wealth of info on the history and craft of Sweetgrass basket-weaving!!

Go Casual Crabbing With TiaCharleston is known for fresh seafood and this is a unique yet quintessential way to get hands-on with all that’s under the sea. Tia Clark is native to the city and she will show you how to cast a net, set bait, fish, and catch crabs. I hope you have more luck than I did with crab catching, but I can assure you that you’ll enjoy stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new. This is the ultimate way to experience a different side of Charleston that most tourists miss. Plus, Tia is just amazing! There’s a reason why Airbnb hand-selected her experience and story as one of the best on the platform.

Relax at The Battery & White Point Gardens – If you’re looking for a peaceful spot to relax, then you’ve gotta visit The Battery & White Point Gardens. This site was once a public garden and it even served as a fortification for the city during the civil war. You’ll be able to witness historical structures throughout the park along with an incredible view of Charleston Harbor. Soak up the sun, smell the salt water, feel the saltwater breeze against your skin, and sit under the giant oak trees that line the park.

Learn about Black History At The Boone Hall PlantationIt’s impossible to deny the horrors that were once inflicted upon enslaved African-Americans on plantations across the south, but it’s equally important to understand what took place at places like the Boone Hall Plantation. While sobering, it is a moving depiction of the life of an enslaved person. Don’t leave without seeing a live presentation of Gullah Culture from a third-generation Gullah who was born in South Carolina!

Admire THE Angel Oak Tree Drive out to Kiawah Island to witness one of the oldest living trees in the US – over 500 years to be exact! South Carolina is already known for its gorgeous Spanish Moss and Palmetto Trees, but this one takes the cake! The tree is 65 feet tall and the limbs are quite literally grazing the ground. Don’t take it from me though! The Angel Oak Tree is a natural wonder that you must see for yourself!

Tour The Aiken Rhett HouseThe Aiken Rhett House demonstrates the stark contrast between the lives of slave owners and the enslaved whom lived under the same roof yet within entirely different realities. You’ll take a self-guided tour through the home and get a unique look at one of the best-preserved homes in the US since the 1830s.

Roam Rainbow Row – Rainbow Row just might be the most picture-perfect neighborhoods I’ve seen in the US! Before you get to the Battery, you’ll walk through a community of pastel-colored and cobblestoned streets wth homes that date back to the 1740s. Don’t forget to be camera ready! You’ll definitely want to snap a few photos!

This should be more than enough to fill your weekend, but you can also take a ghost tour, drink your way through the local craft beer scene, go to the Gibbes Museum of Art, lounge on the beautiful beaches, and bop around King Street! Needless to say, you certainly won’t be bored in Charleston!

What To Eat In Charleston

 • Enjoy Rooftop Vibes at The Watch – Catch the best views of Charleston while sipping on brunch cocktails at the Watch. Get the roasted pimento cheese dip – thank me later!

 • Let’s Taco ‘bout Mesu! What sounds better than Sushi and Mexican fusion at a black-owned restaurant right on King’s Street? I’ll wait!

 • Nothing beats a Southern breakfast and Miller’s All Day has you covered. The biscuits and gravy are truly some of the best I’ve ever tried. And don’t forget to check out the 175-year-old mill in the front of the store as proof that Miller’s All Day is producing some of the best grits around!

 • Slip into Chez Nous for a dining experience like no other! You’ll eat from a daily-changing menu while sitting inside of an intimate, candle-lit home.

 • Nobody does Barbecue like South Carolina and that’s coming from a Texan! Rodney Scott’s is no exception! We’re talking about a James Beard award winner and chef that has been featured by the likes of Anthony Bourdain. Need I say more?

 • Grab a glass of wine to the sounds of live jazz music at The Graft. It’s good vibes only at this black-owned wine bar!

 • Chow down on hand-made biscuits at Callie’s hot Biscuits! These are undoubtedly some of the best biscuits I’ve ever had in my life. And don’t even get me started on the Grits! I had the pleasure of making biscuits with the founder Carrie and she is incredibly inspiring. While Charleston is Callie’s founding location, It’s easy to see why she’s expanded to markets like Atlanta and Charlotte.

 • Grab some speciality goodies to go at Caviar & Bananas! Consider gathering some local snacks for a picnic at Battery Park!

 • Get Gullah at Gillie’s Seafood! Every Gullah I met said I couldn’t leave without tasting some soul food & traditional Gullah cuisine at Gillie’s. As a lover of soul food, I knew I had to visit and I wasn’t disappointed. Show up with an empty stomach because Gillie’s will fill your belly & soul.

 • Eat brunch inside of a refurbished cathedral at Church and Union! The property is one-of-a-kind and the food is just as special.

There’s no shortage of places to eat in Charleston. Make reservations to secure a spot at some of the best spots in town! Regardless of where you choose to dine, there are certain Southern classics that you must try like Grits, Fried Green Tomatoes, and She-Crab soup! Thank me later!

Have I convinced you yet? This is definitely the most dynamic US city that I’ve visited in a long time! As a traveler with an abundance of interests, Charleston ticked every box. From tasty food to exciting adventures to ample history, it undoubtedly lived up to the hype. Whether you want to take a family trip, travel solo, or bring your girls on a bachelorette trip, you’re bound to have a fantastic time! Get yourself to Charleston ASAP so you can see what the hype is all about! Have I steered you wrong yet?

Ever been to Charleston?? If so, share your recs below!

I was hosted by Visit Casper and all opinions are my own.

Welcome to Wyoming – Casper, Wyoming to be exact! This year I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Wyoming TWICE. I first visited Yellowstone in Wyoming back in March and I recently returned for a trip to Casper. To be honest, I didn’t know much about this region of the United States prior to my Yellowstone visit. I was pleasantly surprised on that first trip, so I knew I was in for a treat when Visit Casper invited me to visit for a weekend.

My first impression? Casper is a relatively small town(population: 57k) that reminded me a lot of West Texas. The city is in central Wyoming with a long history of oil and cowboy culture. If you were simply passing through, you might miss all that Casper has to offer. I can definitely say that it’s a great weekend destination for eating your heart out, exploring the great outdoors, fly-fishing, and more.

As my mom is on a mission to visit all 50 states, I brought her along for the journey and we were able to enjoy Casper in ways that we never imagined.

As a very important note, Casper is currently open for safe visitation. They are doing all that they can to protect both citizens and visitors. Masks are enforced, businesses offer outdoor seating, and many activities can be done while social-distancing.

WHERE TO STAY

While visiting Casper, I had the pleasure of staying at the Ramkota Casper. With a downtown location, this was the perfect launchpad for me to explore Casper. Every main attraction I visited was just minutes away, which made it easy to do as much as possible in a certain amount of time. My favorite aspects of staying at the Ramkota included:

 • Free shuttle services to and from the airport

 • Spacious rooms that allowed for complete relaxation with my mom

 • Complimentary breakfast

As a note, masks are required. Measures are being taken to protect both employees and customers at the Ramkota Casper.

WHAT TO DO

Go Fly Fishing

casperwyomingtravelguide

People travel from all over the world to go fly fishing in Casper. With anywhere from 3000 to 5000 fish per mile, the area is one of the best big fish destinations in the USA. You’ve gotta put this on your Casper bucket-list. You can take a guided tour with Ugly Bug Fly Shop and learn everything from casting the rod to the process of tying a fly(bait used to lure the fish in). If you’re anything like my mother and me, you might not catch a single fish. However, I can say that this is the most peaceful thing I’ve done in a while. It certainly tested my patience. There’s a first time for everything, right?

Take The Scenic Route To Freemont Canyon

casperwyomingtravelguide

Drive out to Freemont Canyon to safely catch some of the best views in Natrona Country. You’ll witness geological wonders from start to finish. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can kayak, boat, climb, or fish in the area.

Visit the Nicolaysen Art Museum

casperwyomingtravelguide

The Nicolaysen Art Museum is a self-guided studio that features a collection of traditional and contemporary art. If you visit anytime soon, you must see Georgia Roswell’s exhibit which features Wyoming’s landscape via discarded textiles. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Note: You’ll be required to social distance inside of the museum. Don’t forget your mask!

Chase Waterfalls at Rotary Park

casperwyomingtravelguide

Garden Creek falls is a hidden gem at the base of Casper Mountain. You can safely hike the trails and stand at the base of the waterfall for gorgeous views.

Bring Out Your Inner Artist at Art 321

casperwyomingtravelguide

Stop by this art organization to shop local art or get your creative juices flowing with an onsite art class! Choose from pottery, photography, painting, and more.

Shop For Souvenirs While Supporting Local Businesses

casperwyomingtravelguide

In downtown Casper, you’ll find a local shop at every turn! For reference, you can carry a piece of Casper with you by shopping at Floral Rhino, Lou Taubert Ranch Outfitters, or WyoMade Apparel & Craft goods before you go!

Masks will be enforced inside local businesses.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK

Note: Bring your mask and be prepared to social distance in indoor establishments. Feel free to ask about outdoor seating when possible.

If you find yourself in Casper, I implore you to stick around to discover just how much this town has to offer! Trust me when I say, this is the kind of place that will take you by surprise!

The Biggest Question I Receive As A Black Traveler And Why I Don’t Have An Answer | “Where are you from?” https://heyciara.com/whereareyoufromtravelingwhileblack/ https://heyciara.com/whereareyoufromtravelingwhileblack/#comments Tue, 30 Jun 2020 23:19:13 +0000 https://heyciara.com/whereareyoufromtravelingwhileblack/ But where are you REALLY from?

The post The Biggest Question I Receive As A Black Traveler And Why I Don’t Have An Answer | “Where are you from?” appeared first on Showit Blog.

]]>
Local: “Where are you from?” ⁣

Me: “The United States…America.”⁣

Local: “No, but where are you REALLY from?”⁣

Me: “…America. Texas, to be exact.”⁣

Local: “Where are your parents from?”⁣

Me: “America :).”⁣

Local: “Your grandparents?.”⁣

Me: “Still…America.”⁣ ⁣

whereareyoufrom

I’ve been asked this question by locals all over the world and I know what they’re getting at. I know they see my brown skin and while they can see that I am black by race, they’re curious about my ethnicity. They’re curious about my origins. Sometimes they’ll suggest countries in Africa or even the Caribbean. I simply smile and say, “Maybe. It’s possible.” This has triggered arguments, as if I’m lying or hiding something. I can see the confusion on their face, but I truly do not have an answer for them. ⁣ ⁣There are a few things to note about this conversation…

When I’m asked of my origins, people are often confused about WHY I don’t know where my family is “actually” from. I must then share a history lesson about the transatlantic slave trade in America. I must tell them that most(not all!) African Americans know that we have African Ancestry, but we were robbed of knowing our identity. We don’t know the true extent of our heritage. Eventually, the constant question revealed how great of a privilege it is to know where your ancestors come from. To carry their last names rather than that of a slave owner. To have remnants of family history that weren’t burned and records of your relatives that weren’t “lost” somewhere along the way. By the end of my mini-history lesson, they kinda sorta get it. I walk away feeling proud of the culture that black Americans have created in-spite of, while also having a burning desire to know more about my roots. Because at times, being black in America feels like being in the between.⁣

Then there’s the fact that many non-Americans(especially from non-western countries) have an idea of what “Americans” look like. Because my skin is brown, I can’t possibly be from the US. Western media tells them that an “All-American” girl is either blonde or brunette. Western media perpetuates the narrative that black & brown people are not REAL Americans.⁣

A few years back, I became fast friends with a blonde German girl in Nicaragua while we were both traveling solo. One day, we decided to visit a UNESCO heritage church in the capital city when suddenly we were swarmed by a large group of local school children. They all whipped their camera phones out and their teacher said they wanted to practice their English with us. Can you guess who they all ran towards? The Blonde GERMAN girl. They were shocked to discover that I spoke English at all & that I was in fact the American. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with this, it’s interesting to see how skin color plays into global perception. ⁣

These instances occur around the world for me, especially when I am alone. Many non-white English teachers struggle to find work in foreign countries because they don’t ‘look the part’ as an American. In this way, travel has truly opened my eyes to my perceived place in the world. It’s revealed the ways an accent, skin color, language, passport, title, etc can subconsciously elevate or lower an individual’s status in the eyes of another.⁣

Who can relate? Can we discuss how media perpetuates the myth of “The Melting Pot” that is America it or that a convo for another day? *sips tea* And maybe one day I’ll take a DNA test. Who Knows? I worry about giving away that access. Can we trust the accuracy of this stuff anyway? Have you taken a DNA test? What were your thoughts about it? ⁣ ⁣

HALT!!

Pause.

Stop right there.

Are you hungry? Angry? lonely? Tired? These are questions I use to check in with myself when I’m traveling, especially solo. There are so many moving parts that make it easy to overlook our basic needs while traveling. Interestingly enough, this weird time at home has caused me to check in just as much, if not more – despite the fact that nothing at all seems to be happening. Here’s what that usually looks like and how it looks now: ⁣

Hungry

“Have I eaten? Have I drank enough water? I’ve gone from bus to train to plane without eating. I should probably eat.” ⁣

Angry

“Has anyone or anything pissed me off? That train I missed? The person that cut me in line? Do I need to process anything or let something/someone go?” Time to whip out the journal, meditate/pray, workout, turn on my favorite song, etc. These are all things that can be done currently in the comfort of your home. ⁣⁣

Lonely

Do I need to phone a friend? Do I need to move from my stunning(but lonely) Airbnb/hotel to a hostel so that I can be around others? Maybe I should go to the park or a local coffee shop.” Right now? You might use the House Party app to Facetime friends or social distance with a friend outdoors. ⁣

Tired

“I live for an adventure, but Lord knows I need my rest. Should I stay in and catch up on sleep tonight? Do I need to take a nap?” Currently, if you’re anything like me, you may ask yourself if living like a nocturnal creature is serving you. Shoutout to quarantine sleep patterns! ⁣

We ALL know what it’s like to be HANGRY, let alone all of these things at once. Once we take a tiny bite of food we feel like ourselves again. Traveling alone has really taught me to tune into how I’m feeling and well since there’s nobody to distract me, I must constantly ask myself where I’m at – mentally. Oftentimes, I simply need to attune to my basic needs. It usually makes a world of difference in the end. ⁣

Many people are currently alone and I know that it may be strange to feel so much at once. Don’t forget to check in with yourself!

How are you feeling?

The Importance Of Optimism https://heyciara.com/frostbankfrostitforward/ https://heyciara.com/frostbankfrostitforward/#comments Fri, 31 Jan 2020 23:02:51 +0000 https://heyciara.com/frostbankfrostitforward/ Travel and life have taught me that miracles can happen and people are mostly kind.

The post The Importance Of Optimism appeared first on Showit Blog.

This post is sponsored by Frost Bank. All opinions are my own.

Let’s talk about optimism. At the end of the day, perspective is everything. If there’s anything I’ve learned throughout this journey of mine, it’s that optimism is key. Travel and life have taught me that miracles can happen and people are mostly kind. My family has been there for me every step of the way and strangers have allowed me to sleep in their home, for crying out loud. The list goes on. Whenever I encounter hardships, I am able to power through using my community, resilience, and faith.

Frost Bank’s ‘Frost It Forward’ Campaign

IMG_4472 (1).JPG

It’s always been my goal to give back to others, whether I’m at home or abroad. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it weren’t for the kindness and generosity of those around me. This is why I think it’s so important to keep the cycle going and pay it forward. When Frost Bank asked me to participate in their ‘Frost It Forward’ campaign, it was a no brainer.

According to Frost, optimism has the power to improve health, lower stress, improve relationships, extend life, and overall make us happier. I couldn’t agree more.

As part of this campaign, I was provided a $100 gift card and my only task was to brighten a stranger’s day! The holidays are all about joy, but they can also be full of stress. The pressure to purchase gifts, prepare food, and attend parties can create a lot of financial stress for many of us. When I received my ‘Frost It Forward’ gift card, I set out to ease this burden for a stranger in need.

I drove to the neighborhood grocery store and stood near the check-out counter to find someone who might be in need of assistance. After about 15 minutes, I spotted a family of 5 with a cart full of groceries.

I walked over with a huge smile on my face and asked, “Would you mind if I paid for your groceries?” The mother was clearly confused.

“Are you serious?” she asked.

I simply nodded my head.

Tears fell from her eyes.

“I’ve heard about this kind of thing happening to people, but I never thought it would be me,” she said.

“She really needed this,” her son said.

All I could do was smile. I don’t know this woman’s story. Heck, I don’t even know her name. All I know is that she left the store feeling relieved. And who knows? Maybe she’ll try to pass that feeling on to a loved one or a stranger that she encounters. That’s the thing about kindness, though. It has the power to spread like wildfire if we allow it.

frostbankfrostitforward

It brings me joy to know that I was able to brighten this woman and her family’s day. I feel inspired to continue spreading the love because we could all use more of it in our lives. To learn more about how you can get involved and spread optimism and generosity, please visit OptForOptimism.com

frostbankfrostitforward

For now, here are a few ideas on how you can Frost It Forward:

Pay for coffee for the person behind you in line.

Bag groceries for the person behind you in line at the grocery store.

Purchase a meal for a family out to dinner.

Bring flowers to someone in a nursing home and spend time with them.

Buy holiday gifts for a family in need.

Buy a coat for someone in need.

Invest in a YMCA membership for someone.

Happy New Year! Don’t forget to Frost It Forward!

issolotravelscary

Don’t get it twisted.

I have doubts every time I take a solo trip

Every-time I’m in an Airbnb alone and I hear a thump

As I walk down the street with a man following closely behind behind

When I slide into the backseat of an cab- just a male driver and I

When I notice someone’s eyes lingering for a second too long

As I grip my valuables closely to my side on a crowded bus

And as I stare out the plane window during takeoff.

Despite how the photos turn out, it’s not always twirling in the streets,

sometimes it’s speed walking down a dimly lit alley while looking over my shoulder

Solo travel doesn’t necessarily get easier or less scary, at least not for me.

These thoughts still sit in the back of my mind because let’s face it, anything can happen anywhere at any time.

Even still, I refuse to let that stop me from living and seeing this great big world.

I choose to acknowledge the fear, be vigilant, and enjoy everything as much as possible.

I choose to go and keep going.

The post 22 Amazon Travel Essentials For Every Solo Traveler appeared first on Showit Blog.

]]>
So, you’re going on a solo trip?

You probably have so many things running through your mind. At least, I know I did when I first started traveling solo.

“How will I secure my bag?”

“How will I fit everything inside of my bag?”

“How will I get photos of myself”

“How will I alert someone if I need help?”

My mind was full of worries when I departed for my first solo trip. While I’ve learned that there’s no guaranteed way to prevent bad things from happening, I’ve also learned that preparation can go a long way.

These days, I’m able to pack in a less than ten minutes(when my Uber is around the corner) and I know exactly what to bring to make my trip a breeze. These are my favorite Amazon essentials that I’d suggest to every solo female traveler for a safe journey and every adventure along the way:

1. Compression Packing Cubes

Compression cubes have changed the packing game. They’ll help you organise and compress your clothing on the road. You might be suprised to discover just how much you can fit into a single compression cube. I was skeptical in the beginning, but now I’m a believer.

It’s worth investing in high quality packing cubes that have a good zipper and water-resistant material.

2. TSA Security Lock

Whether you plan to check your bag or store it in a hostel, it’s crucial that you secure your baggage. A TSA Security lock will give you a peace of mind when your bag is out of site. If you plan to lock your luggage before flying, then it’s important to purchase a TSA approved lock incase they need to check your bags. If you plan to stay in a hostel, then you’ll need to bring your own lock for storage lockers inside of the room.

Keep in mind that a combination lock will likely be more convenient than a lock with a key. I’ve lost a few keys in my day.

3. Portable Charger

A portable charger is absolutely necessary when you’re on the road, especially as a solo traveler. Traveling solo without a phone could be a huge safety concern. After taking way too many photos and using travel apps to help guide you, you’ll find that your phone battery drains rather quickly. Be prepared with a portable charger to use on-the-go.

4. Filtered Water Bottle

Bottles of water can really add up, so I never leave home without my water-bottle. By using a water-bottle, I avoid overusing plastic and buying several bottles of water a day. Many hotels, hostels & rental homes have water for you to re-fill your bottle every morning. This also makes it easy to stay hydrated!

I personally love insulated water-bottles that keep my drink cold or warm! Alternatively, a filtered water bottle may be useful when traveling to developing countries.

5. Electrolyte Packets

Speaking of hydration, electrolyte powder is a total life-saver on the road. If you end up with an unfortunate case of food poisoning, then you’ll need electrolytes to bring you back to life. I’ve used hydration salts for food poisoning, extreme heat, dehydration, jet lag, fatigue, general sickness, and hangovers! I can’t necessarily count on someone else to take care of me while traveling solo, so these bring me back to life rather quickly. Gatorade/Powerade can be difficult to find in certain countries, so I prefer to bring packets. Pour these into your water-bottle and voila! They work like magic.

I swear by this particular brand and it helps that they supply clean water to a child in need with every purchase. Trust that you’ll be feeling brand new after you rehydrate with these.

6. Waterproof Phone Pouch

I’ve traveled all around the world with this $6 waterproof phone case and it has never let me down. This phone pouch is high quality and It’s the perfect alternative to an expensive underwater camera. In addition, I’m able to wear it around the neck during beach trips – which is perfect for those times when I have no-one to watch my belongings. #solotravelstruggle

7. Universal Travel Adapter

Don’t forget to pack a universal travel adapter if you plan to travel internationally!

8. Menstrual Cup

It’s important to consider how you plan to handle your period while traveling. It can be difficult to find tampons in many developing countries and you may have a hard time communicating this with the language barrier if you’re overseas. A menstrual cup may be much more convenient and sustainable when you’re on the road for an extended period of time.

9. Pepper Spray

If you want to take extra safety measures while traveling solo in the U.S, then consider bringing mace. Keep in mind that pepper spray must be packed into your checked bag and it cannot be taken in your carry-on.

Pepper spray is illegal in many countries outside of the US, so be sure to do your research before flying!

10. Personal Alarm

If you don’t feel comfortable traveling with pepper spray, then a personal alarm is a great alternative. If an attacker approaches you, then a personal alarm may deter them from acting further and alert by-standers. This is unlikely to happen, but it’s best to prepare for any outcome. This is perfectly legal

11. Carry-On Bag

It may seem impossible, but #teamcarryon is the way to go as a solo traveler. There’s nobody to help you carry your bags or watch your bags while run to the bathroom, so I recommend packing as light as possible. I’ve made the mistake( still do) of overpacking, and trust me – it’s no fun.

When you pack in a carry-on, you’ll save money and avoid long baggage claim lines. Whether you decide to bring a backpack or suitcase, packing light will make things alot easier. http://fbuy.me/kWrR1

12. Micro-Fiber Travel Towel

Most hostels require you to bring your own towel. Regular towels can be bulky and they take way too long to dry, so a light weight, quick-drying towel will be useful. Think about those beach days too!

13. Tripod

When it comes to taking photos as a solo traveler, the struggle is REAL! If you’re not a fan of selfies, then it may be worth buying a tripod! You’ll be able to take photos without depending on a stranger’s help. Be sure to purchase a sturdy tripod, arrive as early as possible to avoid awkward stares/crowds, and keep an eye on your gear to prevent theft. Always be aware of your surroundings while shooting with a tripod to remain safe.

 • Set a Timer – Use the timer function so that you have time to set up your shot & pose before pressing the shutter.

 • Buy a remote Use a remote to control the shutter without having to run back and forth. Hide the timer by putting your hand behind your hat or body using a clever pose.

 • Use burst mode – Burst mode will help you capture many photos in a short amount of time. Switch up your poses and WORK IT!

14. Travel Journal

My travel journal keeps me sane. You’ll have some incredible experiences on the road, but your memories will fade quicker than you think. When you travel solo, you don’t have a travel buddy who that will always be there to say ‘remember that one time in *insert location* when…?’. A journal can help you keep track of reflections, goals, encounters, pictures, train tickets, ideas, feelings, and more.

15. Money Belt

Want to avoid pick-pockets? A money belt will keep your money and travel documents hidden. You can easily keep your money, passport cards, IDs, and keys close under your clothing as you explore a new destination. This is especially useful in big cities, large crowds, and public transportation! Look out for features like RFID blocking protection & water resistant fabric for rainy days.

The best thing about this specific money belt by Peak? It comes with $250 theft insurance for reimbursement incase your valuables are stolen, along with a lifetime guarantee. I haven’t seen any other brand offer this. Alternatively, they sell a neck wallet which includes $250 theft insurance as well.

16. Travel Wallet

If money belts aren’t your thing, then a simple travel wallet will do the trick. You can easily organize your travel documents as you go through airport security or customs.

Bonus tip: Separate your cards and limit the cash you carry on a daily basis!

17. Mini First Aid Kit

You’ve gotta look out for yourself whenever you travel solo. A mini-first aid kit can be useful for cuts, scrapes, aches, burns, colds, and much more. You can either purchase a pre-made packet or create your own DIY first aid kit full of your favorite products. Either way, I wouldn’t recommend traveling solo without one.

18. Neck Pillow

I don’t fly without this neck pillow because it provides incredible all-around neck support. It’s a life-saver during long flights or bus rides!

You receive a lifetime warranty with this specific pillow – they’ll even replace it if it’s lost or stolen.

19. Anti-Theft Daypack

A day-pack is absolutely essential for any traveler. You’ll use a day-pack for day trips, excursions, and any other time spent outside of your hotel room. You can store your camera, journal, travel documents, and other day-to-day essentials inside while you’re on the go. Aim for an anti-theft bag to prevent pick-pockets and bag-cutters!

20. Wrinkle Releaser

Clothes wrinkle easily when they’re stuffed in a suitcase and you may not have access to an iron, especially if you’re staying in a hostel. This wrinkle releaser is my go-to product for dresses and shirts. I’m constantly impressed by how well this works. It won’t replace an iron, but it definitely gets the job done if you don’t have one!

It’s also an odor eliminator and fabric refresher – so it’s perfect for hikes or busy trips where you may not have time to wash often.

21. Door stopper

A door stop security alarm would be especially useful if you plan to stay in hotel rooms or rental homes alone. This serves as an extra level of security that will alert you and potentially scare away any intruders. You can never be too safe.

22. Multi-Purpose Cleaner

My best-friend brought this organic multi-purpose cleaner on our Iceland road-trip and I thought it was genius! We were able to use it on our bodies, faces, hair, dishes, and even clothes. Ever since then, I can’t travel without it. It’s perfect for solo travelers with limited luggage space.

I hope this was helpful to you! As always, I encourage reading reviews, comparing products, checking warranties/return policies and deciding which products/brands work best for you! Enjoy and stay safe on your solo trip!

This post is brought to you in partnership with Wealthfront and all opinions are my own.

I dreamed of traveling the world one day.

I spent the past two years making it happen through saving and budgeting.

It’s been the greatest investment I’ve ever made in myself.

Now I’m living that dream, so it’s time to refocus my goals and aim for more. That’s what 2019 is about for me.

Financial freedom is my greatest goal in 2019 and beyond.

In the traveling community, people often share that they desire travel above all else and I’ve always felt differently. Travel has truly been my been my greatest passion and teacher, but I have plenty of goals that are unrelated to travel. I want to see the world AND I want a cozy home. I want to experience different cultures AND I want to live a comfortable life. I believe that it’s possible for me to have both.

Financial freedom has provided me the opportunity to travel and I know that it can lead to much more. It’s not necessarily about having more money or material items, but the simple fact that it would allow me invest in myself, my dreams, and the people around me.

wealthfrontfinancialplanning

It means that I can afford to invest in my physical and mental health, whether that be through purchasing healthy food items or paying for therapy.

It means that I can afford to invest in my personal development, which ultimately affects the people around me and the world at large.

It means that I can afford to invest in charities, organisations, and people that I support.

It means that I can experience security and stability in the long term.

It means that I can continue to see the world, have location independence, and invest in life-changing experiences.

It means that I can afford to create the life that I truly desire.

wealthfrontfinancialplanning

I’m excited to start this financial journey in 2019 because I know that it will be so beneficial in the long run. Aside from the standard ‘save your money’ talk while growing up, finances weren’t a major topic of discussion in my household. Therefore, I still have so much to learn when it comes to earning, saving, budgeting, and investing money. I’ve been reading books, listening to podcasts, watching youtube videos, and even using apps to increase my financial knowledge.

Weatlhfront, an automated financial planning app, has been an extremely helpful resource during this process. It’s free, easy to use, and convenient for someone like me who travels full time. I’m not ready for a financial advisor just yet, so this app has been an incredible(did I mention free?) alternative.

Once I entered my financial information into the app, I began receiving financial advice from experts. I’ve been able to learn about the longterm tradeoffs of my current decisions, which has been extremely eye-opening. I receive actionable advice for different scenarios and goals that may arise. I’m still a bit lost, but I’m learning more about investing – which I can’t wait to dig into this year! Like I said in a recent Instagram caption, I’m not tryna be balling on a budget all of my life.

I’m all about goal-setting and planning, so this app has been very insightful. I’ve been SO pleased with Wealthfront’s services and I trust that this is the best start on my journey to financial wellness.

“Be featured in a podcast”

This was one of my biggest goals of 2018. And what do you know? It happened. I was featured in the ‘On She Goes’ podcast, which is a platform made for and by women of color who travel. I discovered ‘On She Goes’ nearly a year ago and it was amazing to find an online space that was dedicated to a demographic of underrepresented travelers. Check out their podcast and website!

In this podcast I discuss everything from being the best version of my self while traveling solo to being a minority traveler.

I start talking at 18:00. You can listen here:

A Weekend In La Paz, Mexico | Places That Leave You Pleasantly Surprised https://heyciara.com/lapazmexicoguide/ https://heyciara.com/lapazmexicoguide/#comments Mon, 10 Dec 2018 07:27:28 +0000 https://heyciara.com/lapazmexicoguide/ Mexico always leaves me pleasantly surprised and La Paz was no different.

Have you ever heard of La Paz, Mexico?

I have to be honest. I visit different towns in Mexico yearly, and I only recently heard of La Paz. This is exactly why Mexico just might be my favorite country in the world. I spent a month traveling through lesser known towns in Mexico earlier this year, yet I somehow missed La Paz. I find myself pleasantly surprised to discover a new side of Mexico every time I visit. This also means that I will always have reason to return. It doesn’t hurt that a flight from Texas is usually $200 and less than 2 hours away.

ABOUT LA PAZ

La Paz lies just two hours outside of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It’s the capital of Baja California Sur, but it remains laid back in comparison to many of the larger resort towns that many visit Mexico for. I stand by the fact that Mexico has much more to offer than the stereotypical resort vacation, and La Paz is the perfect example of that. It’s basically Heaven for anyone who is searching for adventure(think swimming with whale sharks & sea lions), idyllic beaches(#1 beach in Mexico), and possibly the best Ceviche that has ever touched your lips(#FACTS).

GETTING TO LA PAZ

La Paz has a small airport, but I flew directly into Cabo from Houston. You’ll likely pay less to fly into a larger airport, and then you can arrange transportation from there. Consider booking a shuttle with Eco Baja from the Cabo airport to the La Paz Malecon/Boardwalk

HOW LONG TO STAY IN LA PAZ

Admittedly, La Paz is a relatively small town. It’s perfect for day-trips or possibly even a two/three day weekend. You can definitely see everything within a weekend!

lapazmexicoguide

Things to do

SNORKEL WITH WHALE SHARKS

Most people visit La Paz to get up close & personal with whale sharks. I am proud to say that I found myself face to face with 5 whale sharks within a period of three hours. This was by far one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. Check out Tuna Tuna Tours to book this experience!

SWIM WITH SEA LIONS

As if swimming with whale sharks wasn’t enough, I had the opportunity to swim with Sea Lions. It was hilarious to hear their howls and witness them in their natural habitat.

GO STAND-UP PADDLE BOARDING

This was my first time stand-up paddle boarding and I fell in love! My legs were wobbling like crazy in the beginning, but it was so much fun once I got the hang of it! Check out Baja Desconocida Tours to book a session at Balandra Beach.

SWIM AT BALANDRA BEACH

Balandra Beach is known as the most beautiful beach in Mexico! There’s a lot of competition, so that’s saying a-lot. The beach is mostly full of locals and man, is it breathtaking! Be sure to take the short hike at the entrance of the beach for an incredible view from above!

VISIT ENSANADA GRANDE

Ensanada Grande was a true gem in every sense of the word. This beach can only be reached by boat, but I encourage you to make it a point to visit. It has the most crystal clear water I’ve ever seen with a pink hue of sand.

STICK AROUND FOR SUNSET

They say that no sunset in La Paz looks the same and I definitely believe it. Within the short amount of time that I was there, I saw the most beautiful pink and orange sunset.

CHECK OUT TODOS SANTOS

Todos Santos is a nearby ‘Pueblo Magic’(Magic Town) that’s worth a day-trip if you have the time. This is where I took surf lessons at Mario Surf School and simply admired the colonial architecture.

La Paz is literally a hop, skip & jump from Texas, so I’m sure that I’ll be back. It’s another destination has rekindled my love affair with Mexico.

Thank you to the La Paz tourism board for Inviting me to experience this destination. All opinions are my own.
