Why isn’t anyone talking about the Southern Illinois Wine Trail?

This thought rang through my head as I drove through vast corn fields that go as far as the eye could see. I could also see long stretches of vineyards, apple trees, sunflower fields, and peach farms scattered throughout. I drove down the quiet streets of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail with my windows down, hearing nothing but strong gusts of wind and my road trip tunes playing aloud. With minimal noise or crowds, it felt like ultimate relaxation, and it was exactly what I needed.

I already had a pretty good impression of Illinois from a previous trip to Chicago, but I didn’t know what to expect from Southern Illinois. Despite being less than a 3-hour flight from Houston and a 1-hour flight from Chicago, I hadn’t heard much about this part of the state.

Fortunately, Enjoy Illinois invited me to explore the Shawnee Wine Trail and discover all that Southern Illinois had to offer. The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail is 40-miles long and consists of eleven wineries along Highway 127 and 51. Most visit for the wineries but the area offers much more for those looking to explore further. From U-pick apple and peach farms to pumpkin patches, sunflower fields and more. Then there’s the sprawling forests that cover the region, like Shawnee National Forest, which spans 289,000 acres. Oh and we’re just getting started. This article will guide you on a journey that will showcase the best of Southern Illinois and the Shawnee Hills for your future roadtrip. Ready? Let’s get into it!

All About the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois

There are 11 wineries in the Shawnee Hills:

Alto Vineyards

Blue Sky Vineyard

Feather Hills Vineyard & Winery

Hickory Ridge Vineyard

Honker Hill Winery

Kite Hill Vineyards

Owl Creek Vineyard

Peachbarn Winery & Café

Pomona Winery

StarView Vineyards

Von Jakob Winery & Brewery

When to Visit the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois:

I visited during the month of September when the weather was quite literally perfect—mid-70s to mid-80s. We often felt like we had the whole place to ourselves, which was sublime. While the summer months are certainly warmer, the weather is still incredible at a high of 90 degrees. In Summer you’ll experience more crowds, but this also means businesses will have longer hours and there will be more events throughout the area. Surprisingly, the winters are relatively mild with an average temperature around 50 degrees. So why visit in the winter? Well, you can receive discounts with the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail Passport Program. This program is only $20 and you’ll save with winter specials on food, wine, and more!

While I couldn’t have been more pleased with the perfectly warm weather we experienced at the end of September, I would have loved to see the changing of the leaves in October or the sunflowers in full bloom during early Spring. Plan accordingly based on your interests!

How to Get Around the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois:

I rented a car to explore the region, which gave me the freedom to make stops wherever my heart desired. Alternatively, you can book a seat on the Shawnee Shuttle, which will include pick-up/drop-off from your accommodation and a trip coordinator to help you map out the ultimate itinerary.

Where to Stay on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois

While there aren’t a huge number of major hotel chains on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, there are certainly some unique bed and breakfast options.

Davie School Inn

We stayed in a former public school! Yes, you heard that right! Davie School Inn is a unique B&B that was once a public school in Anna, Illinois. While the building has been refurbished into a modern hotel, there are still visible remnants of the 1900s school in the gymnasium, classrooms, and other areas of the building. The owners, Tammy & Lyle, are extremely welcoming and make a mean breakfast. You’ll have a homemade spread delivered to your room each morning and it’s just as amazing as it sounds. The cinnamon rolls are to die for, and I don’t say this lightly—we both agreed that they’re the best we’ve ever had. Don’t believe me? Go and see… or taste for yourself. Davie School Inn is full of quirks and it’s clear why it’s rated five stars on Google.

Historic Hull House Inn

As you drive further down the trail towards Murphysboro, you’ll find the charming Historic Hull House Inn. This Victorian-era inn was built in 1887 and was once the home of William H. Hull. There are three different quarters onsite and the property is set just outside of Shawnee National Forest. The Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places and I was in awe of the historic architecture. It felt pretty amazing to be staying in a piece of history. I don’t get that experience often in Texas.

Where to Drink on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois

You’ll have plenty of wineries to fill your itinerary as you venture through the region (see above), but here are my recommendations:

Hickory Ridge Vineyard – This winery was the highlight of our trip! It’s homey and quaint, while leaving a lasting impression. With the rolling vineyards and vine-covered patio, you’ll feel right at home. The stunning scenery is accompanied by a superb selection of dry wines. I ordered a flight to sample the best of the best and I was not disappointed. “Sip” back, relax, and enjoy the views!

Alto Vineyards – This is one of the more well-known and frequently visited wineries on the wine trail, and that’s for good reason. It is the oldest and has won the most awards of them all. The server recommended their award-winning Chambourcin, which is a signature red wine in the region. This was one of the many wines I tasted in my sampler and let’s just say I was more than pleased. Oh, and I may be stating the obvious here, but you absolutely must order a charcuterie board alongside your wine flight.

Blue Sky Vineyard – Tuscany or Southern Illinois? You’ll definitely feel like you’re in Italy at the beautiful Blue Sky Vineyard. You can even stay in a suite at the vineyard if a tasting just isn’t enough. Who else could say that they woke up to vineyard views this week? Because I certainly can!

Where to Play on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois

Explore Shawnee National Forest

You’ll have the opportunity to wander through nearly 300,000 acres of land at this national forest.

 • My personal favorite stop? The Garden of The Gods. A local told me that this was an absolute must see, so we had to take his word for it. It lived up to the hype, and I must admit that it exceeded my expectations for natural wonders in Southern Illinois! If you don’t do anything else (aside from wine sipping), visit the Garden of the Gods.

 • Another must-see? Giant City State Park. You’ll hike through greenery and slither through bluffs during your adventure. You can explore by foot or even horseback!

Other places to visit inside the Shawnee National Forest?

Pomona Natural Bridge

Little Grand Canyon

Jackson Falls

Burden Falls

Sand Cave

Get High at Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour

If you’re in need of an adrenaline rush, look no further than Shawnee Bluffs Canopy Tour. You’ll conquer eight zip lines across 83 wooded acres. The guides will provide safety instructions, and they’ll teach you about the ecology of the area. As someone who is always chasing the next thrill, this was exactly what I needed.

Head To The Orchards

Go apple and peach tasting at Rendleman Orchards and Flamm Orchards. The peaches at Rendleman Orchards give Georgia peaches a run for their money. Don’t leave without tasting the peach cobbler! Flamm Orchards will serve you up the best apple pie of your life. We even brought a bag of apples back on the flight! If that doesn’t tell you how amazing their product is, well, then I’m not sure how else to convince you.

Where To Eat On The Shawnee Hills Trail in Southern Illinois

You can certainly eat at the wineries and orchards along the trail, but here are a few food recommendations if you want to switch things up:

17th Street BarbecueThis BBQ joint is said to have the best ribs in the U.S., but the sides are highly underrated. The fried pickles and the baked beans are the best I’ve ever had, and this is coming from a Texan, where BBQ is a staple.

Faye Coffee Shop Faye offers light bites and quality coffee inside a refurbished century-old building. While the building may be historic, you’d never know with its sleek interior design. It’s right across from Historic Hull House Inn in Murphysboro (previously mentioned).

Grafton Winery and BrewhausThis is a bit further out in Grafton, but it’s a great stop for the beer lovers who might need a break from wine. Enjoy some German bites and craft beer as you soak up the Southern Illinois vibes on the restaurant rooftop. Okay, okay, if you haven’t had enough wine, you can order wine that is sourced from their winery too. Live music is often offered on weekends, so be sure to check their Facebook page to keep an eye on events.

I wish I could say “That’s All Folks!”, but there’s so much to do with so little time. As I always say, I’ll have to return for more. Ideally, I’d return when the sunflower fields are in full bloom and the peaches are ripe for pickin’! Another trip, another U.S. gem that has taken me by surprise. You can’t go wrong with the perfect balance of relaxation and exploration. Whether you’re passing through on a roadtrip or planning a dedicated stay along the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, be sure to make the most of your trip with this guide. “‘Wine’ not?” You won’t be disappointed.

I can’t emphasize how long I’ve been waiting to visit Charleston, South Carolina. I’d heard that the city was rich in history, culture, and charm. I’d heard that architecture would make me feel like I stepped back in time and that the food would quite literally make my mouth water. I’d heard this from so many people that I knew I had to go see for myself. Just a few years ago I visited South Carolina for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the Lowcountry – Beaufort, Daufuskie Island, and Hilton Head to be exact. I was simply counting down the days until my return so that I could finally see what all the Charleston hype was about. I was ecstatic when Discover South Carolina invited me to visit at the top of 2022. The timing was perfect, so I couldn’t have said yes quicker. I am now back from a 4-day/3-night trip to Charleston and I’m here to share the (sweet) tea! Before we dive into everything I got up to, here are some things you should know about the ‘Holy City’(one of the city’s many nicknames):

 • The first public US public college, theatre, museum, and golf club were established in Charleston. The city is full of history!

 • The pineapple symbol that you see displayed on buildings around the city represents hospitality. The Southern hospitality that permeates the city is REAL!

 • The state of South Carolina produces more peaches than Georgia. The more you learn!

 • Charleston’s Angel Oak Tree is one of the oldest living trees in the US – 500 years to be exact!

 • Sweetgrass baskets are South Carolina’s official handicraft and you can shop for these cultural souvenirs at the Charleston City Market

Now that we’ve got the basics covered, let’s get into this weekend guide for your trip to Charleston!

Where To Stay In Charleston

I was fortunate enough to stay in the pretty and (very)pink Mills House Wyndham Hotel. Pink is my absolute favorite color, so I thought the hotel was stunning. The architecture is reflective of the vintage allure that radiates through the cobblestone streets of Charleston. The Mills House was built in 1853 and the hotel just steps away from the city’s most historic sites. It’s full of amenities like a fitness center, a pool, a business center, and an onsite restaurant. You’re only .2 miles from the Charleston City Market, 315 feet from the Gibbes Museum of Art, 1.1 miles from the Aiken Rhett House, and .9 miles from the Charleston Museum. That’s just the beginning. Now that you know where you’re staying, let’s get into things to do on your visit.

What To Do In Charleston

Shop For Souvenirs At The Charleston City Market – You cannot go to Charleston without strolling through the historic Charleston City Market. Established in the 1970s, there are four long blocks for you to shop your heart out. What would I recommend picking up? Sweetgrass handicrafts! Sweetgrass basket-weaving is a cultural skill that has been passed down through Gullah culture from generation to generation. I got to meet Corey Alston who is a direct ancestor of the Gullah Geechee family and he demonstrated the process of basket weaving. His stall is set up at the very front of the market and his baskets are artfully crafted. Not to mention, he’ll share a wealth of info on the history and craft of Sweetgrass basket-weaving!!

Go Casual Crabbing With TiaCharleston is known for fresh seafood and this is a unique yet quintessential way to get hands-on with all that’s under the sea. Tia Clark is native to the city and she will show you how to cast a net, set bait, fish, and catch crabs. I hope you have more luck than I did with crab catching, but I can assure you that you’ll enjoy stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new. This is the ultimate way to experience a different side of Charleston that most tourists miss. Plus, Tia is just amazing! There’s a reason why Airbnb hand-selected her experience and story as one of the best on the platform.

Relax at The Battery & White Point Gardens – If you’re looking for a peaceful spot to relax, then you’ve gotta visit The Battery & White Point Gardens. This site was once a public garden and it even served as a fortification for the city during the civil war. You’ll be able to witness historical structures throughout the park along with an incredible view of Charleston Harbor. Soak up the sun, smell the salt water, feel the saltwater breeze against your skin, and sit under the giant oak trees that line the park.

Learn about Black History At The Boone Hall PlantationIt’s impossible to deny the horrors that were once inflicted upon enslaved African-Americans on plantations across the south, but it’s equally important to understand what took place at places like the Boone Hall Plantation. While sobering, it is a moving depiction of the life of an enslaved person. Don’t leave without seeing a live presentation of Gullah Culture from a third-generation Gullah who was born in South Carolina!

Admire THE Angel Oak Tree Drive out to Kiawah Island to witness one of the oldest living trees in the US – over 500 years to be exact! South Carolina is already known for its gorgeous Spanish Moss and Palmetto Trees, but this one takes the cake! The tree is 65 feet tall and the limbs are quite literally grazing the ground. Don’t take it from me though! The Angel Oak Tree is a natural wonder that you must see for yourself!

Tour The Aiken Rhett HouseThe Aiken Rhett House demonstrates the stark contrast between the lives of slave owners and the enslaved whom lived under the same roof yet within entirely different realities. You’ll take a self-guided tour through the home and get a unique look at one of the best-preserved homes in the US since the 1830s.

Roam Rainbow Row – Rainbow Row just might be the most picture-perfect neighborhoods I’ve seen in the US! Before you get to the Battery, you’ll walk through a community of pastel-colored and cobblestoned streets wth homes that date back to the 1740s. Don’t forget to be camera ready! You’ll definitely want to snap a few photos!

This should be more than enough to fill your weekend, but you can also take a ghost tour, drink your way through the local craft beer scene, go to the Gibbes Museum of Art, lounge on the beautiful beaches, and bop around King Street! Needless to say, you certainly won’t be bored in Charleston!

What To Eat In Charleston

 • Enjoy Rooftop Vibes at The Watch – Catch the best views of Charleston while sipping on brunch cocktails at the Watch. Get the roasted pimento cheese dip – thank me later!

 • Let’s Taco ‘bout Mesu! What sounds better than Sushi and Mexican fusion at a black-owned restaurant right on King’s Street? I’ll wait!

 • Nothing beats a Southern breakfast and Miller’s All Day has you covered. The biscuits and gravy are truly some of the best I’ve ever tried. And don’t forget to check out the 175-year-old mill in the front of the store as proof that Miller’s All Day is producing some of the best grits around!

 • Slip into Chez Nous for a dining experience like no other! You’ll eat from a daily-changing menu while sitting inside of an intimate, candle-lit home.

 • Nobody does Barbecue like South Carolina and that’s coming from a Texan! Rodney Scott’s is no exception! We’re talking about a James Beard award winner and chef that has been featured by the likes of Anthony Bourdain. Need I say more?

 • Grab a glass of wine to the sounds of live jazz music at The Graft. It’s good vibes only at this black-owned wine bar!

 • Chow down on hand-made biscuits at Callie’s hot Biscuits! These are undoubtedly some of the best biscuits I’ve ever had in my life. And don’t even get me started on the Grits! I had the pleasure of making biscuits with the founder Carrie and she is incredibly inspiring. While Charleston is Callie’s founding location, It’s easy to see why she’s expanded to markets like Atlanta and Charlotte.

 • Grab some speciality goodies to go at Caviar & Bananas! Consider gathering some local snacks for a picnic at Battery Park!

 • Get Gullah at Gillie’s Seafood! Every Gullah I met said I couldn’t leave without tasting some soul food & traditional Gullah cuisine at Gillie’s. As a lover of soul food, I knew I had to visit and I wasn’t disappointed. Show up with an empty stomach because Gillie’s will fill your belly & soul.

 • Eat brunch inside of a refurbished cathedral at Church and Union! The property is one-of-a-kind and the food is just as special.

There’s no shortage of places to eat in Charleston. Make reservations to secure a spot at some of the best spots in town! Regardless of where you choose to dine, there are certain Southern classics that you must try like Grits, Fried Green Tomatoes, and She-Crab soup! Thank me later!

Have I convinced you yet? This is definitely the most dynamic US city that I’ve visited in a long time! As a traveler with an abundance of interests, Charleston ticked every box. From tasty food to exciting adventures to ample history, it undoubtedly lived up to the hype. Whether you want to take a family trip, travel solo, or bring your girls on a bachelorette trip, you’re bound to have a fantastic time! Get yourself to Charleston ASAP so you can see what the hype is all about! Have I steered you wrong yet?

Ever been to Charleston?? If so, share your recs below!

I recently got to visit Yosemite National Park and I had so much fun exploring, just like I was a kid in a candy store. Yosemite has been on my bucket list for ages, yet I’ve never managed to fit it into my California travels. A few weeks back, I had the opportunity to road trip the region and so many people recommended Yosemite. Let me tell you— it was so worth it. When it comes to nature, I’m a waterfall kind of gal and Yosemite was a waterfall wonderland. My inner child felt at peace. Of course, I had to share the experience with you so that you, too, can make this destination a reality for yourself!

Getting There

There are many airports in the areas surrounding Yosemite. Do some research to find the cheapest flight! Take note that Yosemite National Park is extremely large, so when mapping from the airport to the park, do not map to the entrance, map to Yosemite Valley, as this is where the majority of the sites are.

The closest airport is Merced, two hours away. Fresno is a close second at two hours and 15 minutes. The Sacramento and Oakland airports are just under four hours, and the San Fransisco Airport sits right at four. Although San Francisco is a bit further than other options, it is often the cheapest, because of its size

Alternatively, It was significantly cheaper for me to fly into Los Angeles from Houston than both Merced and San Francisco. I flew directly into Los Angeles and drove approximately 4.5 hours into Yosemite Park just after landing. It sounds brutal but the drive wasn’t bad at all. And trust me when I say it was absolutely worth it.

Flight costs will vary depending on your departure airport. Search flights HERE and find my guide to finding cheap flights HERE.

Campsites

Take it from me – Campsites MUST be booked months in advance. This last-minute or as I like to call myself *spontaneous* traveler had no idea. This was a last-minute trip so I got lucky with what must have been a cancellation the night before we arrived.

If you want to stay in the park, you should start booking campsites as soon as you know you’re going! You can book ahead of time on www.recreation.gov. You can find nearby campgrounds using apps like Kampgrounds of America, Reserve America, or Allstays. There are nearby hotels & Airbnb’s just outside the park if you prefer to stay in traditional accommodation.

Also, as of June 2021, visitors will now need a reservation to enter the park so make sure you book your spot ahead of time.

When to Go

If you want to see endless waterfalls, you’d need to visit in the Springtime. Summertime is obviously a prime time to visit, but you’ll have an increase in crowds and temperature. Waterfalls dry up by the end of summer, but fall will bring cooler weather and fewer crowds. Wintertime would obviously bring harsher weather, with many trail/road closures. I’m so happy that we visited during the springtime. I heard that Yosemite can feel a bit like Disneyland with the summertime crowds, so I’m glad we were able to avoid that.

REMINDER: YOU NOW NEED A RESERVATION TO ENTER THE PARK.

The Itinerary

When I planned my trip, I didn’t have any set goals. I simply went with the flow. I just wanted to be there, and it did not disappoint. I encourage you to do the same; do not worry about having every detail figured out but let yourself be present and enjoy every moment in one of the most beautiful places. Use this itinerary as a guide to get you started, but leave yourself time to do your own thing!

Day 1

See Yosemite Falls

Yosemite Falls (2,425 ft) is one of the tallest waterfalls in North America. It doesn’t get much higher than that! The falls are made up of 3 separate tiers, upper-tier with an average height reaching close to 1,430 feet tall while lower levels plunge down some 675+/-feet below ground level. sometimes you might feel like you’re standing underneath it while other times on top of the world. You can even take an all-day hike to the top of the falls.

You can see the Lower Yosemite Falls with a short, easy hike that starts at the Lower Yosemite Falls trailhead. If you’re in need of a cool down, hit the Bridalveil Trail where you’ll be able to get up close & personal with Lower Yosemite Falls. It was such a rush to be standing on massive rocks and feel the cool mist of the falls.

Glacier Point

Glacier Point is a must-see. With breathtaking views of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and the high country it’s easy to see why visitors come from all over just get their fill of this incredible spot! From late May through October or November you’ll be able to take advantage of these picturesque spots, so plan accordingly.

Day 2

Hey Ciara Yosemite

Tunnel View

One of the most famous views in Yosemite Valley, Tunnel View can be found just outside Wawona tunnel on State Highway 41. There’s no hiking required and it’s a popular spot with tourists during summer so try arriving early if you want to avoid long lines! This is a great place to grab a photo as you explore other points in Yosemite Valley.

Taft Point

If you are looking for something more challenging, take a hike to Taft Point. It’s a shorter distance that will give your legs some good exercise while also providing an unforgettable view of Yosemite Valley! It is sure to test your fear of heights, being a dramatic lookout point where there isn’t any guardrail around. Climbers can get vertigo-inducing glimpses into the depths below them. It is an experience for the true adventure seeker!

This was one of my favorite spots and it’s perfect for sunset or sunrise. You’ll witness dramatic views of Yosemite Valley and you’ll get a bit of a workout on the way up.

Day 3

Travel Yosemite

The Mist Trail

Take a hike to see Vernon and Nevada falls on Yosemite’s signature trail. The Mist Trail has fabulous views scattered along it beginning with the bridge overlooks that provide stunning scenery for miles in every direction before finally ending at two unforgettable waterfalls totaling over 900 feet (270 meters) high! The hike can take up to five hours if you take advantage of the entire trail. If anything, try to get to the top of Nevada Falls. Trust me on this!

This one is definitely more challenging than the other trails listed. At certain points, the trail is completely vertical. The steps seem never-ending, but the views are EVERYTHING. If you visit during the springtime, you will see(and feel) some of the most jaw-dropping waterfalls. I felt like I was in Iceland for a minute there. Take your time and spend the day seeing everything there is to see on this trail. Even consider bringing a notebook and pen, and journal as you relax in the middle of the most beautiful spot in North America.

NOTE: You could be able to make these stops in 3 days or less, but I recommend giving yourself time to truly wander and disconnect. And you will be disconnecting(whether you like it or not) because there is hardly any service in the park.

Accommodations

Visiting Yosemite is an experience like no other and is different than a lot of places I travel to. That is because you won’t be looking for the perfect hotel or restaurant; instead, you will be surrounded by beautiful nature and scenery. When looking for accommodations, get a camper van and make it an adventure.

If there’s any way to see California, it’s with a camper van – Cabana Vans to be exact. I spent a week road tripping up through Yosemite and along the Pacific Coast Highway, and I cannot put into words the experience it was. Let’s just say, I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I’ve stayed in a campervan before, and this was definitely an elevated experience. Allow me to break down all that Cabana Vans has to offer:

Hey Ciara

– A toilet, shower with hot water, and outdoor shower

– Wifi in areas where cell service is available

– A kitchenette available as an add-on

– Fridge, sink, trash can, and coffee maker

– A/C and heater

– Concierge service

– A Smart TV

– Insurance included

– Storage space and power outlets

– Touchless pick up

– A gear garage

– A safe

If you are interested in seeing it for yourself, go check out my Yosemite profile highlights on my Instagram (@hey_ciara). The van is a converted Ford Transit, with a length of about 20 feet (similar to a suburban). It’s the biggest vehicle I’ve ever driven, and I had no issues at all. Cabana Vans is based out of both Los Angeles and Seattle. It’s the campervan of my dreams, and you will want one too once you experience it for yourself.

Food

Cooking in a camper van isn’t as hard or boring as you might think, it just takes a bit of planning! As you cook in your camper van, keep these tips handy:

– Plan to cook things that can be easily stored and prepared. We basically lived off fruit, sandwiches, and granola bars during the daytime.

– Breakfast burritos and wraps are a great way to get a nutritious and easy meal in.

– If you get the kitchenette add-on, experiment by throwing different fillings into the skillet, like rice, veggies, and spices. Get creative with it! I made breakfast, pasta, and burgers using the mini kitchen.

Final Thoughts

“What is there to even do in Yosemite?”, asked my dad upon my return. I showed him endless photos of cascading waterfalls and massive granite slabs that towered above Yosemite Valley. “Other than hiking and observing your surroundings? Just be.” That’s the thing about nature. It’s a space where your soul can BE. Sure, you could go hiking, rafting, climbing, all the things…but you are also free to just be. I implore you to go and see for yourself.

Have you visited Yosemite? Share your experience below and let me know if there are more sites that you would have included!

A Weekend Guide To Deer Valley and Heber Valley Utah https://heyciara.com/deervalleyandhebervalleyguide/ https://heyciara.com/deervalleyandhebervalleyguide/#comments Thu, 10 Mar 2022 09:59:20 +0000 https://heyciara.com/deervalleyandhebervalleyguide/ Where to stay, eat, and play in Deer Valley & Heber Valley, Utah

The post A Weekend Guide To Deer Valley and Heber Valley Utah appeared first on Showit Blog.

]]>
There’s nothing like a ski trip to make the most of the fresh powder once winter comes around. Skiing along with snowmobiling, snowshoeing, Apres ski, s’mores, hot cider, and more are practically snow trip essentials. That’s why I was stoked to be invited to Deer Valley and Heber Valley by the Utah Office of Tourism for a quintessential ski trip this past winter. First and foremost, I would have the opportunity to ski for the very first time in my life. Secondly, I’d get the chance to partake in many other winter activities like snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and more! I had a blast living my best snow-bunny life and in the end, I discovered that skiing in Park City hardly scratches the surface of things to do. From skiing in Deer Valley to discovering what Heber Valley has to offer, there’s plenty to experience in the area. Trust me when I say that you’ll want to stay longer or plan your next trip to Park City before you’ve even left. I’ve created a guide for all that you can see, do, and eat on your next winter trip in Deer Valley and Heber Valley.

How To Get To Deer Valley and Heber Valley:

The best option for visiting Park City is to fly directly into Salt Lake City. Once you’ve landed, you can arrange a car or take an Uber about 50 minutes out to Park City.

If you want to visit Heber Valley from Park City, you’ll need to arrange transportation to drive 20 minutes to Heber Valley. Heber is a small town so a rental car would be the best form of transportation in order to navigate the area.

How To Get Around Deer Valley and Heber Valley:

You can easily use ridesharing apps and taxis to get around the Deer Valley area but they aren’t as readily available in Heber Valley. I’d recommend renting a car if you plan on exploring both areas!

Where I stayed in Deer Valley and Heber Valley:

The Lodges at Deer Valley In Deer Valley

The Lodges at Deer Valley are practically steps away from the slopes, which makes it the perfect launchpad for skiing and exploring Park City! You’ll get the quintessential ski lodge vibes while having plenty of amenities that will help you make the most of your time in Deer Valley. You’ll receive free breakfast, hot tub access, complimentary shuttle access, complimentary ride-sharing(imagine Uber or Lyft…but free!), fresh daily cookies, and so much more! There’s also a restaurant on-site that served what may have been one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. Service is impeccable and you’re less than 10 minutes away from exploring downtown Park City!

Homestead Resort in Heber Valley

If you’re searching for a place to stay in Heber Valley, Homestead resort is it. While being steeped in history, the modern farmhouse design will take you by surprise. There’s an on-site restaurant and you’re only steps away from The Crater – which is an underground thermal pool reminiscent of cenotes you might find in Mexico. This sprawling property was absolutely stunning!

Things To Do In Deer Valley and Heber Valley:

Go Skiing In Deer Valley – Did you even visit Park Valley if you didn’t ski? I’m nearly 30 and I went skiing for the first time on this trip. I took lessons and I may have been learning to ski alongside 2-year-olds but I honestly had the time of my life. Skiing has always appealed to me but it was never a priority because….

1. I live in Texas. What snow?

2. It’s cold. Refer to 2

3. Skiing and snowsports can be expensive

4. Never saw people that looked like me doing it!

Deer Valley is known to have some of the best instructors, so it’s ideal for more experienced skiers and beginners like myself. If skiing has been on your bucket list, then this is the place to do it. Allow yourself to be a beginner and fall and feel a bit silly. Once you get going, I promise you’ll feel so free.

If skiing isn’t your thing, then there’s still plenty of fun and thrill for your to indulge in on tour visit! What else can you get up to?

Go Snowshoeing In Deer Valley – Skiing May not be for you, but what about hiking? Snowshoeing is essentially hiking, but you’ll be rocking specialized gear to help you navigate through the snow. This is a great way to spend time outdoors, explore more of the area on foot, and move your body. I truly enjoyed Snowshoeing with All Season Adventures because it allowed me to experience Deer Valley in a completely different way. This was my first time snowshoeing and I cannot wait for the opportunity to do it again.

Go snowmobiling in Heber Valley – If you haven’t been snowmobiling, it’s similar to jet skiing – but you’re in the snow. If you go with Wasatch Excursions, you’ll ride through Wasatch Mountain State Park which you may know as the site of the winter Olympics. As an adrenaline junkie, this was by far one of my favorite things I did while visiting Heber Valley. I had a blast zipping and zooming through Aspens that nearly touched the clouds. Wasatch Mountain State Park was absolutely beautiful. This one is definitely for the thrill-seekers.

Dine in a snowglobe in Heber Valley – Eat inside of a heated snowglobe at Cafe Galleria. Oh and prep your playlist bc there’s a USB and personal speaker in each snow-globe to set the vibe! You’ll truly feel like you’re in a winter wonderland as you brunch it up in your very own personal bubble. If you find yourself visiting for brunch, then you should definitely order the French toast. Thank me later!

Go Tubing at Soldier Hollow – You’ll slide through 1200ft long lanes of snow and I’ll definitely be jealous because I didn’t have time to do this one myself. That just means I need to return, right? Tag me because I’ll be living vicariously through you!

Go Cross Country Skiing at Soldier Hollow – Since they’re at the same spot, spend an entire day at Soldier Hollow before/after tubing so that you can squeeze in some Cross Country Skiing. While I didn’t have enough time to partake this time around, I loved every minute the first time that I went cross-country skiing. It’s a bit of a workout, but it’s a great way to explore the area. Take it easy as you navigate more of Wasatch Mountain State Park via Cross Country Skis.

Go Swimming In the Heated Crater – If you wanna soak (or dive) in a geothermal hot spring, then you’ll love The Crater! You can even do stand-up paddleboard yoga inside – just be sure to book a spot ahead of time! Don’t forget to pack a swimsuit!

As you can see, you’ll have plenty to fill your time in both Deer Valley and Heber Valley. The list of winter activities is endless.

Where To Eat in Deer Valley and Heber Valley

Fireside Dining – This is a unique dining experience where you’ll feast on food that’s being cooked fireside. You’ll choose from four courses of unlimited fare that are being prepared by stone fireplaces. From fresh fondue to chocolate-dipped fruit, you’re in store for a delicious swiss-inspired dinner. You can even arrange a horse-drawn sleigh ride to get the full winter experience! Be sure to book a table before you arrive!

Riverhorse on Main – This is Park City’s top-rated restaurant and it’s a must-visit. Be prepared to be wow-ed by dishes like Lobster Gnocchi and Pan Seared Ahi Tuna. If you’re a live music lover, then you’re in for a treat. River Horse brings in performers daily so that you can enjoy your meal to the sound of sweet tunes!

High West Saloon – If there’s one place you should be for Apres Ski, it’s High West Saloon. It’s located in Old Town Park City at the base of a ski resort. In fact, it’s the only ski-in/ski-out distillery. It serves up some ski-town classics like Poutine, Fondue, and Charcuterie. Pair that with the ‘High West Flight’ to sample the best spirits that they have to offer. If you’re interested in learning more about High West and the Whiskey making process, you can book a distillery tour.

Café Galleria – Whether you want to dine inside of a snowglobe or sit inside of their eclectic cafe, this eatery deserves a spot on your foodie bucket list. The breakfast that they serve is that home-style cooking that feels all too familiar. Outside of breakfast hours, you’ll have the chance to enjoy Rustic Italian-inspired cooking.

The Corner – Who doesn’t enjoy cheese croquettes and country-fried cauliflower? I know I do and that’s why I’ve gotta recommend The Corner. This restaurant serves upscale American classics. Check their website calendar to drop in for some live-music performances to enjoy while you dine.

Royal Street Cafe and Fresh Tracks at Deer Valley Resort – I’ve gotta say this is some of the best resort food I’ve ever had. I fully expected over-priced sandwiches and hot dogs, but Fresh Tracks provided healthy bowls while Royal Street Cafe served up fresh Salmon. These aren’t your standard ski-lodge restaurants!

The Brass Tag – Since I was staying at the Lodges at Deer Valley, The Brass Tag was conveniently located onsite. This was my first meal upon my arrival in Deer Valley and it was undoubtedly the best place for me to kick off my trip. Firstly, the fondue is incredible. Secondly, the steak was cooked to perfection. *Chef’s Kiss* Don’t even get me started on the breakfast buffet!

What To Pack For Winter in Deer Valley and Heber Valley

You’ll definitely want to be prepared for the cold weather so that you can actually enjoy all of the activities you have planned. The most important thing is to pack layers upon layers so that you can be prepared for weather fluctuations throughout the day. Here’s what I suggest bringing:

 • Hand warmers are lifesavers

 • Thick socks – Merino wool is best!

 • An insulated puffer

 • Waterproof pant/jacket shells for ski days

 • Thermals/Long Johns

 • Waterproof gloves

 • Beanie

 • A lightweight fleece jacket

 • A buff and/or balaclava to wear under your helmet

 • A heavy coat to rock to Apres Ski

 • Swimsuit for heated pools, saunas, and The Crater

This Texas girl was definitely nervous about freezing but the weather was manageable because I came prepared! When it comes to ski gear, ask close family/friends or search for used gear on sites like Facebook Marketplace. Check Amazon for affordable winterwear and rent poles/skis at Deer Valley Resort.

I admittedly found myself wanting to extend my flight so that I could cross everything off of my winter bucket list. So many things to do, so little time. Trust me when I say, you’ll want to make the most of every moment. The best part is that there’s something for everyone in Deer Valley and Heber Valley. I traveled solo, but you could easily bring your girls, your partner, and even your children. Not only that, there’s a wide array of activities for every kind of traveler. You have the opportunity to chase the thrill while skiing or snowmobiling. On the contrary, you can keep movement to a minimum by simply hitting up your resort spa or enjoying Apres Ski.

Personally, this was the perfect destination for me to step out of my comfort zone and travel differently. I usually find myself traveling to warm weather destinations, so packing for the snow certainly proved to be a challenge! In the end, it was so worth it. I was able to physically push myself and do things that I’d never done before. It was a bit out of my comfort zone but I found myself pleasantly surprised by both Deer Valley and Heber Valley. And isn’t that what travel is all about? If you’re considering a winter or ski trip, these towns should be at the very top of your list!

I was invited to Amarillo with Visit Amarillo and HooDoo Mural Fest on a sponsored trip and here’s my weekend guide! All opinions are my own.

As someone who was born & raised in Texas (Htown to be exact), I was surprised to discover all that this western town had to offer! Although Amarillo is famous for its Western culture, the city boasts countless other experiences as well! I’m a bit ashamed to say that I’d overlooked this part of the state, but I’m so glad I got to finally visit for myself. Amarillo is rich in history and has an abundance of things to do and see, not to mention some good eats, too! If you’re not from around here, it’s difficult to know what to expect when visiting this part of the country. You’ll find that there is plenty to do to fill a weekend in Amarillo, and if you’re looking for some advice on how to best spend your time while you’re here, keep reading! As always, I got you!

This is a super easy destination to visit if you’re visiting from neighboring states or road tripping the iconic Route 66.

WHERE TO STAY TO AMARILLO, TEXAS

When looking for the perfect stay for your visit to Amarillo, I recommend the Barfield: Autograph Collection for its stunning accommodations and excellent customer service! I’m a huge fan of Marriott’s Autograph Collection so this was right up my alley. And let me tell you, the modern design with western influence is on point!! If there was ever a hotel that embodies “good ole southern hospitality,” this one would be it. The hotel includes a full restaurant and bar, complimentary shuttle service, fitness center, and it is pet-friendly. And if you happen to be a night owl rather than a morning person, you’ll be happy to hear that checkout isn’t until 12 pm!

If you need to grab a bite or drink, there’s an Italian Steakhouse on site along with a revived speakeasy right in the hotel. The brunch pancakes are some of the best I’ve ever had and y’all know I live for a speakeasy!

The Barfield Hotel’s prime location on downtown Amarillo’s historic Polk Street makes it just minutes from some of the best attractions in the city and only 15 minutes from the airport.

Need I say more?

WHERE TO EAT IN AMARILLO, TEXAS

First, let’s jump into the food! Here are my top six choices for where to go in Amarillo

1. Delvin’s BBQ

Did you come to Texas if you didn’t try the BBQ? It’s a low-key spot on the edge of town but the locals will tell you that it’s THE place for some good ol’ Texas BBQ. And I concur. Did I mention that it’s black-owned? Make this your first stop!

2. FAVs

FAVs is a vibrant, healthy, and fresh lunch spot in Amarillo with salads, smoothies, sandwiches, and snacks. With fresh fruits and veggies in every bite, this is a great option for something light, but still super satisfying. Get all your vitamins and nutrients in without compromising taste. This is a solid restaurant for those who are looking to keep it healthy in Amarillo!

3. Coyote Bluff Café

Some of the best places to eat are “hole in the wall” cafes. One such place is Coyote Bluff Cafe, which serves up world-famous burgers! They’re closed on Sundays and Mondays so be sure not to miss this one while you travel around town looking for foodie adventures!

4. Yellow City Street Food

The next place on my list for an unforgettable culinary experience is the local chef-owned restaurant Yellow City Street Food. You’ll find delicious combinations of street food and upscale multi-course dinners all under one roof! From tacos to burgers, wok dishes or vegan fare, they have it all!

5. The Royal Bar

We all know I love a good cocktail and the Royal Bar is a craft cocktail bar with an elegant, yet unpretentious atmosphere. They even offer small plates if you need a bite to eat while sipping on specialty cocktails or spirits.

6. Crush Wine Bar and Restaurant

Crush is a prime spot for enjoying the nightlife of downtown Amarillo. With delicious steak and fish dishes that are sure to leave your mouth watering all evening long, as well as their new full cocktail bar with an upstairs patio looking over gorgeous downtown Amarillo, it’s no wonder Crush has become so popular! Oh and it’s conveniently located across the street from the Barfield! Didn’t I say I got you?

There’s one thing to note: Much of the town closes on Sunday’s so be sure to look up opening/closing times and dates so that you can squeeze everything in!

WHAT TO DO IN AMARILLO, TEXAS

In the town of Amarillo, you’ll find a lot more than just horses and cowboys. From art museums to festivals- there’s always something going on in this Texas city that will surprise your senses! Here are my recommendations on where to go and what to do when you visit Amarillo.

1. Hoodoo Mural Festival

If you’re a fan of street art and music, this one’s for you! I got the chance to visit the HooDoo Mural Festival and let me tell you: it was glorious! The city hosts the annual Hoodoo Mural Festival each year that features a music festival with live painting demonstrations. Not only will you be able to see some incredible artwork but also hear great tunes from across genres while enjoying delicious food trucks on site. Be sure to keep a lookout for next year’s dates so you can make it!

2. Palo Duro Canyon

You can’t go to Amarillo without stopping by Palo Duro Canyon! This state park is full of rugged red rock that will make you feel like you’re on another planet. Ya girl wasn’t sure if she was on Mars or Amarillo! I’d recommend hiking the Lighthouse Trail, which is a moderate 2-hour trail that you’ll be so proud to complete! If you’d like to keep things light, you can drive to the outlook points and snap photos throughout the park!

3. Ziplining Over Palo Duro Canyon

If you are looking for an outdoor adventure, you won’t want to miss out on the zipline tour that will leave you feeling like your feet are in another world! You’ll be able to fly over gorgeous Palo Duro Canyon before landing at one of many lookout points for amazing views. Even if ziplining isn’t up your alley, still be sure to go experience the views of this canyon. It is a must-see.

4. Horseback Riding With Cowgirls and Cowboys In the West

I’ve fallen in love with horseback riding over the last few years and so I was stoked to ride out west. My inner Texan (and child) was really glowing as my horse trotted through canyons. You’ll get a chance to stop along the rim of the canyon, so be prepared for some breathtaking views! Book an evening ride to see the beauty of a Texan sunset in all its glory!

5. Bar Z Winery

A great place to stop on the way to or from Palo Duro Canyon is Bar Z Winery. They have some delicious bites and amazing views and it’s perfect for relaxing after a day of adventure!

6. Creek House Honey Farm

For a unique experience, don’t miss out on the Creek House Honey Farm’s beehive tour! You’ll get hands-on education about bees and a beehive. You can also enjoy a tasty brunch along with a beer flight to sample all of their honey-fermented drinks! Oh, and can you even sample wine or beer without a charcuterie board?? I don’t think so!

7. Cadillac Ranch

The upside-down cars of Cadillac Ranch are an art attraction that has become one of the most famous sites in Amarillo. The artful display stands alongside Route 66 where they’ve become an attraction alike to none other! Bring some spray paint OR purchase cans on-site to add your own personal touch to the Cadillacs on this ranch. Be mindful that it may be muddy if it rains which may prevent you from spray painting the cars – unless you’re willing to get a lil dirty!

FINAL THOUGHTS ON AMARILLO, TEXAS

Okay, so have I convinced you yet? I’ve gotta say that I was pleasantly surprised by all Amarillo had to offer. I hope this was helpful and you found some interesting things to do as you fly into Amarillo or road trip through West Texas ! If you decide to try any of my suggestions, please let me know how it went in a comment below. In the meantime, get ready for a great trip exploring this city. If you’re looking for somewhere new and different – why not visit Amarillo?

THE UNKNOWN WONDERS OF WALLA WALLA

It is hard to believe that Walla Walla is one of the most unknown, yet amazing wine towns in the United States. Walla Walla has so much charm with its historic downtown, beautiful natural scenery, and friendly people. But FIRST…You may be thinking “Where is Walla Walla?”. I’m glad you asked! It’s just 4 hours from both Portland and Seattle, smack-dab in the middle of these PNW cities. Sounds like the perfect road trip destination right?

Walla Walla is a city in Washington State that isn’t on most people’s radar. It may not be the easiest place to get to, but the hidden wonders of this small town make it worth the journey. Stick around to find out what to do in Walla Walla, and why this place is so special!

WHY WALLA WALLA?

If you’re looking for a getaway that’s off the beaten path, Walla Walla is your destination. The town has plenty of history and natural wonders to keep you occupied. From an award-winning winery and brewery to terrific restaurants and hip shops, there’s plenty to do in Walla Walla for travelers looking for a different experience. There are also tons of wineries and orchards in any direction you turn. It is the perfect mix of wine country and farm life. You can even enjoy a wine tasting while watching cattle graze on open pastures!

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT WALLA WALLA

Not convinced? Here are 6 fun facts about Walla Walla, Washington so you can impress the locals!

 • Walla Walla Sweet Onions are Washington’s Official State Vegetable

 • Both USA Today and Rand McNally have crowned it America’s Friendliest City. You’ll definitely experience the local warmth firsthand as you explore the town’s attractions.

 • Two colleges and one university make Walla Walla a thriving college town. The prestigious Whitman College counts Adam West (TV’s Batman) and astronaut Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenberger.

 • More than 300 bird species live in the Walla Walla Valley. Wildlife photographers, I’m talking to you!

 • The region has a growing season of 190 to 220 days and an annual rainfall of just 12.5 inches per year on average.

 • Over 120 wineries thrive in and around Walla Walla, which is the perfect segway into my next section!!

WHERE TO STAY IN WALLA WALLA

Can you imagine staying in an overwater bungalow that overlooks hundreds of acres of vineyards? Well, it’s definitely possible at the Eritage. One of the unique aspects of this lodge was that each suite opens to a patio or deck with stunning views of the Blue Mountains. The heated saltwater pool here is an absolute must-try! And if you’re feeling up for it, I highly recommend a stand-up paddleboard sesh in the on-site lake or exploring the nearby vineyards by bike!

If you know me, you know how much I preach that location is everything! One of the best things about Eritage is that it’s only minutes from downtown Walla Walla and its regional airport which is key for getting the most out of your stay (and getting to sleep in).

WHERE TO DRINK IN WALLA WALLA

1. Go Wine-Tasting(Duh!)

There’s a new trend in wine country, and it’s making waves across the world. It’s called Walla Walla, and it is here to stay. This is what Walla Walla is most famous for, so of course, it must go first on the list.

I am about to break down my top picks for wineries worth visiting in Walla Walla. If you wanna wine & dine, this Washington town is IT!

Okay, so where are THE wineries you need to visit? Lemme spill the tea, er, wine!

2. Grosgrain Vineyard | Grosgrain Vineyard is located on the Oregon side of the Walla Walla valley it’s dedicated to championing underdog grapes, sparkling wines, restrained reds, and sustainable farming practices. Oh, and the tasting room is GORG!!

3. Foundry Vineyards | Art + Wine, need I say more??? The wines are finely crafted, with low intervention, and low production. You’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised by these organic wines! Stroll through the tasting room gallery as you sip on your wine!

4. Yellowhawk Walla Walla | With over 84 acres of land, this gorgeous vineyard is the ultimate spot for wine & food pairings! Don’t leave without trying the crab cakes!

5. Ita Winery | Winemaker Kelsey Albro Itämeri only sources from the eastern foothills of the Blue Mountains, just near her family’s farm. She’s part of the region’s incubator program, which supports start-up wineries(they receive tasting room space & more)! Loved the descriptions of her wines like “A wine that loves you back, that makes a bad day good, and a good day great. The feeling of being with old friends.” Like, who wouldn’t want a glass of this Merlot?

6. Hoquetus Wine | Musician turned bartender, turned sommelier, turned winemaker, Robert, owns and operates Hoquetus Wine Company. Def show some love to this POC winemaker, who is also part of the region’s incubator program!

Which would you visit?

WHERE TO EAT IN WALLA WALLA

Foodie alert! Okay, so you know where to wine in Walla Walla, now where do should you dine? As always, I gotchu!

1. AK Mercado | Tacos, tacos, and more tacos – all inspired by the flavours of Mexico City! I tried most and you honestly can’t go wrong. The Chicken Tinga was my FAV though!

2. The Walla Walla Bread Company | Okay, so the pastries here are out of this world. An Italian owns this spot and he prepares everything at 3 am daily so you know everything is on point. I actually got to decorate some pastries in the kitchen alongside him and this was one of my trip highlights! As a self-proclaimed French Toast connoisseur, I can def say this was some of the best French toast I’ve ever had.

3. YAMAS | If you are looking for Mediterranean, Greek, or Vegetarian/Vegan Options while in the Walla Walla Valley, you need YAMAS on your itinerary. I honestly felt like I was back on a Greek island while eating here.

4. TMACS | If you’re already feeling a bit bougie from all the wine tasting, book a table at TMACs! Produce is locally sourced, cocktails are handcrafted, menu items are creative, and the place is owned by a 3rd generation Walla Walla local.

5. Foodscape | if you’re looking for specialty food that may be a bit more difficult to find in a small town, this is your spot. While this isn’t a sit-down restaurant, you can order a meal full of fresh ingredients prepared for carry-out.

It was inspiring to try meals from locals and Walla Walla transplants that have brought their recipes from around the world.

SITES TO SEE

1. Whitman College Sculpture Walk – If you enjoy art, be sure to check out the Whitman College outdoor sculpture walk, a hidden gem of the outdoors. The campus has beautiful sculptures that line pathways and make you feel as if you’re walking through an outdoor museum. The campus was gorg and I honestly got a bit nostalgic as I wandered around.

2. Lewis and Clark State Park – Spend time under the shady oaks or in the crystal-clear waters at swimming holes. This park is more than your typical state park. Here you can also explore an original monument from the Corps of Discovery Expedition!

You can also shop at their boutique store or take part in some hands-on fun with lavender craft classes, not to mention the optimal location for your Instagram-worthy pics.

Welcome to Wisconsin, Milwaukee, to be exact! This past month, I was invited to discover the hidden gems of Wisconsin. As a person who prefers to travel without any expectations or preconceived notions, I am able to truly experience destinations at face value. Milwaukee. At first impression, Milwaukee is a very walkable city with gorgeous architecture. Something about the layout of the city felt very European. It sits on the shore of Lake Michigan and we LOVE a city that provides the best of both worlds: city vibes & natural beauty. I can’t speak on the weather in the wintertime, but I happened to arrive when the temp was a sunny 75 degrees and the energy of the city was very much alive. I explored the city by kayak, bike, cruiser, and foot…yet I hardly covered any ground. I crossed another US state off of my bucket list and I’m excited to share how I spent my time in Milwaukee. As always, I hope I can convince you to visit a place that you might not have considered otherwise. After all, you never know until you go. Before I share everything I did, here are some facts about Milwaukee:

What To Know About Milwaukee

 • Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin.

 • Milwaukee is nicknamed ‘Cream City’ after light colored bricks that we’re used on buildings since the 19th century.

 • There are over 30 breweries in Milwaukee. It’s also known as ‘Brew City’

 • Milwaukee is also known as the ‘City of Festivals’, due to the abundance of festivals throughout the year – nearly every weekend in the summertime.

 • Milwaukee is home to the world’s largest dinosaur skull in the Milwaukee Public Museum.

 • Milwaukee is home to the oldest bowling alley in the US, the Holler House.

 • Milwaukee has an endless variety of cheese curds at your disposal.

Where To Stay

As a fan of the Kimpton hotel line, I truly enjoyed my stay at the Journeyman. It was the perfect base for my Milwaukee explorations. It’s set in the historic third ward district, in walking distance to the Milwaukee Public Market and the Milwaukee Art Museum. There is a rooftop restaurant/bar and cafe on site!

In regards to Covid 19 safety precautions, the hotel is currently requiring masks to protect both hotel guests and employees.

If you’re a cat lover, you’ll definitely want to stop by Sip & Purr Cat Cafe to play with cats while you sip on coffee. You can even adopt or sponsor a cat!

Relax at the beachYup, I didn’t know Milwaukee had beaches either. Grab some take out, set up a picnic, & sit by the shore. Hit up Atwater, Klode, Grant, or Doctors Parks!

Other Things To Do – I barely had a chance to scratch the surface when it comes to exploring Milwaukee. If I returned, I’d visit the Harley Davidson Museum/@hdmuseum, wander through the Milwaukee Art Museum/@milwaukeeart, or even tour the Pabst Mansion.

Where To Eat

Have you ever taken a trip where you ended up eating 5 meals a day, simply because you wanted to taste EVERYTHING? Yup, that’s exactly what happened in Milwaukee. I found myself running from one restaurant to the next, hoping that I could squeeze in as much as humanly possible. Here are my favorite food spots in Milwaukee:

Zocalo Food Park/@zocalofoodpark – Zocalo is Milwaukee’s first and only food truck park. From Arepas to Ice Cream, there is a wide variety of food to choose from. It’s basically foodie heaven. Grab a bite(or three) to eat and reserve a greenhouse to enjoy your meals in open air seating!

Sweet Diner/@sweetdinermke – If the long wait-list doesn’t make it clear enough, you should know that this is the place to be for Saturday and Sunday Brunch. I like to call myself a French toast connoisseur and this *might* be the best French toast I’ve ever had. Definitely top 3. I know, bold statement…but I stand by it. Sweet Diner only serves breakfast, lunch, and brunch so be sure to get in early – first come, first serve

Milwaukee Public Market/@milwaukeepublicmarket – Milwaukee Public Market is an absolute must during your visit. From vegan food to all the cheese, you’ll be able to find plenty of fresh food from local vendors. In other words, you can expect to eat your heart out at this indoor market.

The Outsider/ @journeymanhotel – We love a good rooftop bar! Head to the top of the Kimpton Journeyman to sip cocktails and dine with a view of the Milwaukee skyline.

Gloriosos Italian Market/ @gloriososmarket – If you love Italian food, then this place will feel like home. I left with about 5 different types of food. No regrets. You can grab some freshly cooked food or pick up the ingredients to craft your own Italian dinner.

Jewels Caribbean Restaurant/@jewelscaribbeancuisine – Watch live music & eat Jerk chicken at this local Caribbean restaurant. Get. the. Plantains.

Colectivo Coffee/@colectivocoffee – At Colectivo, every coffee batch is roasted by hand and all of their baked goods are made from scratch daily. Need I say more? Sip coffee on a lakefront and do some people-watching in the summer weather. Bakery

I’m sure I’m barely scratching the surface, but these were some of my favorite food places while visiting Milwaukee. A girl can only eat so much!

milwaukeeweekendguide

I left Milwaukee with a desire to extend my trip for *just* one more day. I wanted to eat at *just* one more restaurant and squeeze *just* one more stop into my itinerary. However, like all good things, my trip had to come to an end. Would I return? Absolutely! I feel extremely privileged for the opportunity to discover Milwaukee as somewhat of a hidden gem before the rest of the world catches on!

Needless to say, don’t sleep on MKE!

I was hosted by Visit Casper and all opinions are my own.

Welcome to Wyoming – Casper, Wyoming to be exact! This year I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Wyoming TWICE. I first visited Yellowstone in Wyoming back in March and I recently returned for a trip to Casper. To be honest, I didn’t know much about this region of the United States prior to my Yellowstone visit. I was pleasantly surprised on that first trip, so I knew I was in for a treat when Visit Casper invited me to visit for a weekend.

My first impression? Casper is a relatively small town(population: 57k) that reminded me a lot of West Texas. The city is in central Wyoming with a long history of oil and cowboy culture. If you were simply passing through, you might miss all that Casper has to offer. I can definitely say that it’s a great weekend destination for eating your heart out, exploring the great outdoors, fly-fishing, and more.

As my mom is on a mission to visit all 50 states, I brought her along for the journey and we were able to enjoy Casper in ways that we never imagined.

As a very important note, Casper is currently open for safe visitation. They are doing all that they can to protect both citizens and visitors. Masks are enforced, businesses offer outdoor seating, and many activities can be done while social-distancing.

WHERE TO STAY

While visiting Casper, I had the pleasure of staying at the Ramkota Casper. With a downtown location, this was the perfect launchpad for me to explore Casper. Every main attraction I visited was just minutes away, which made it easy to do as much as possible in a certain amount of time. My favorite aspects of staying at the Ramkota included:

 • Free shuttle services to and from the airport

 • Spacious rooms that allowed for complete relaxation with my mom

 • Complimentary breakfast

As a note, masks are required. Measures are being taken to protect both employees and customers at the Ramkota Casper.

WHAT TO DO

Go Fly Fishing

casperwyomingtravelguide

People travel from all over the world to go fly fishing in Casper. With anywhere from 3000 to 5000 fish per mile, the area is one of the best big fish destinations in the USA. You’ve gotta put this on your Casper bucket-list. You can take a guided tour with Ugly Bug Fly Shop and learn everything from casting the rod to the process of tying a fly(bait used to lure the fish in). If you’re anything like my mother and me, you might not catch a single fish. However, I can say that this is the most peaceful thing I’ve done in a while. It certainly tested my patience. There’s a first time for everything, right?

Take The Scenic Route To Freemont Canyon

casperwyomingtravelguide

Drive out to Freemont Canyon to safely catch some of the best views in Natrona Country. You’ll witness geological wonders from start to finish. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can kayak, boat, climb, or fish in the area.

Visit the Nicolaysen Art Museum

casperwyomingtravelguide

The Nicolaysen Art Museum is a self-guided studio that features a collection of traditional and contemporary art. If you visit anytime soon, you must see Georgia Roswell’s exhibit which features Wyoming’s landscape via discarded textiles. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Note: You’ll be required to social distance inside of the museum. Don’t forget your mask!

Chase Waterfalls at Rotary Park

casperwyomingtravelguide

Garden Creek falls is a hidden gem at the base of Casper Mountain. You can safely hike the trails and stand at the base of the waterfall for gorgeous views.

Bring Out Your Inner Artist at Art 321

casperwyomingtravelguide

Stop by this art organization to shop local art or get your creative juices flowing with an onsite art class! Choose from pottery, photography, painting, and more.

Shop For Souvenirs While Supporting Local Businesses

casperwyomingtravelguide

In downtown Casper, you’ll find a local shop at every turn! For reference, you can carry a piece of Casper with you by shopping at Floral Rhino, Lou Taubert Ranch Outfitters, or WyoMade Apparel & Craft goods before you go!

Masks will be enforced inside local businesses.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK

Note: Bring your mask and be prepared to social distance in indoor establishments. Feel free to ask about outdoor seating when possible.

If you find yourself in Casper, I implore you to stick around to discover just how much this town has to offer! Trust me when I say, this is the kind of place that will take you by surprise!

On one hand, Georgetown is less than an hour away from Austin, Texas. On the other hand, it feels like it couldn’t be further away from the live music capital of the world. Drive thirty minutes away from Austin and you’ll transition from skyscrapers to a town square that feels like you’ve truly taken a step back in time. With a population just shy of 60,000, Georgetown is a much-needed change of pace in today’s busy and noisy world.

If you’re not a Texan, this may be your first time hearing about Georgetown. However, it is home to the ‘The Most Beautiful Town Square’ in the state and it’s known as the Red Poppy capital. Georgetown has made its claim to fame with several blockbusters being filmed in the area, including Dazed and Confused, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, and more. The Southwestern University campus is located in Georgetown and it was the first college built in Texas back in 1840. Needless to say, there’s more to Georgetown than meets the eye.

I truly enjoyed my recent solo trip to Georgetown and I’d highly recommend it for a quick day-trip or weekend get-away. Keep reading my guide to discover all that Georgetown has to offer.

Where To Play In Georgetown

Explore the Underworld at Innerspace Caverns

If you’re looking for a unique adventure, then Innerspace Caverns is a must-visit. People visit from all over the world to see this otherworldly cave that is nearly 5 miles deep and 20 million years old. The caverns were discovered by drillers in 1963 as they set out to build IH-35 just above it. You’ll witness some of the original drilling holes among stalactites or stalagmites as you wander through the dark cave. You can sign up for a 75-minute Adventure guided tour or you can get down and dirty(headlamp, helmet, and all) with their 4-hour long Wild Cave Tour. Either way, you can’t go to Georgetown without touring the Innerspace Caverns. You may book your tour ahead of time here.

Go Shopping In Georgetown’s Downtown Square

Georgetown boasts the ‘Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas’ and it’s easy to see why. The Victorian historic district will make you feel like you’ve been transported to another era. The square is full of restaurants, wineries, bars, and shops for you to enjoy. As there are no open container laws in Georgetown, I personally loved exploring the square with a cup of wine in hand. A few of my favorite shops included Mikey V’s Hot Sauce Shop, The Baked Bear, Georgetown Winery!

Stroll Through San Gabriel Park

Get active at the San Gabrial Park which offers over 9 miles of trails for you to hike, bike, or run. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can go kayaking or fishing with San Gabriel Sports.

Go Swimming In Georgetown’s Blue Hole

The Texas Hill Country is full of swimming holes and Georgetown is no exception. This lagoon is the perfect spot to unwind, soak up the sun, and spend time outdoors! While I didn’t get the chance to visit, I’m looking forward to returning for a swim when I return to the area.

Where To Eat In Georgetown

daytripgeorgetowntexas

El Monumento

When it comes to Tex-Mex, El Monumento just get’s it. Do yourself a favor and order the prickly pear margarita!

600 Degrees Pizza

IMG_3194.JPG

You can order a slice of pizza that’s bigger than your face at 600 degrees pizza without skimping on quality. They serve pizza, craft beer, and wings. Honestly, what more could you ask for?

Monument Cafe

georgetowntexasdaytrip

You know I couldn’t create this guide without suggesting a spot for brunch, right? Well, Monument Cafe is THE place to go for a tasty breakfast or brunch menu. If you visit on the weekend, you’ll get to see live music in their beer garden.

Sweet Lemon

daytripgeorgetowntexas

This farm-to-table cafe offers fresh eats in a bright green cottage that is beyond insta-worthy. Aesthetics aside, their pastries are worth the visit alone. If you needed any more convincing, then you should know that they’ve been voted the best dessert place in town.

Stay At The Sheraton

daytripgeorgetowntexas

daytripgeorgetowntexas

If you decide to spend the weekend in Georgetown, there’s one place you should stay and it’s the Sheraton. The Sheraton Georgetown is the epitome of small-town sophistication. It is one of few full-service hotels in the area and it is simply gorgeous! There’s a nearby running trail, a 24-hour fitness center, a swimming pool set among Rivery Park, and an onsite restaurant that will have you coming back for more. You can’t leave without ordering the Charcuterie board from Brix + Ale, which offers rich honey that is sourced at the Sheraton. Thank me later!

Note: Social distancing is enforced and Masks are required for the foreseeable future.
