How did I end up drinking and watching the most beautiful sunset on a 50 year old woman’s boat? I’ll tell you how.
My heart beat was racing, my body full of adrenaline.

We’d just jumped from a cliff into ice cold water and the sun was about to set over Milos.

The few people who were hanging around we’re departing, which meant that we would have this precious beach all to ourselves.

Suddenly, Archeleos was jumping for joy. His friend, who happened to be on a boat in the distance, spotted us from afar.

“There’s no way!”, we thought. How could his friend spot us on the beach from miles and miles away?

Well, before we knew it, we were all meeting on the beach. His friend was a skipper and he was hosting a 50 year old woman on a month long sailing trip around the Greek islands – solo. ⁣⁣Um…can we say “goals”?
⁣⁣
This woman was a character. The kind of person you only hear about in stories or see in movies. She was talkative, direct, and curious. She spoke with a cigarette in her hand and she had a few more adult treats that she’d brought along with her.

After a brief meeting, she invited us to join her on the sailboat. ⁣⁣ We sat on the boat as the sun set over the ocean. We shared drinks and interesting conversations. She was the life of the party.

“It’s destiny”, she proclaimed.

And I couldn’t help but agree with her.

How did we end up on this boat right here in the middle of the ocean with her with every single one of us being strangers? ⁣⁣Should I call it serendipity? Synchronicity?
⁣
I’ve been faced with this question many times during my travels, but I’ve learned that some things don’t need an explanation. These moments are made for living. ⁣⁣

Well, here’s the thing: I’ve traveled the world alone for the past few years and it’s led to incredible experiences BUT I’m constantly trying to step outside of my comfort zone. Solo travel was a HUGE challenge for me when I first started but I’ve since become accustomed to it. Why not switch things up?

I first visited Greece in 2015 with a group of strangers and had a blast. Way back in 2015, travel was just a far-flung dream. I had no idea how to plan an extended trip in a foreign country and I def wasn’t ready to travel alone. So I signed up for a 35-day group trip through Europe with 30 strangers in hopes that it would help me ease my way into solo travel. I figured that I’d is able to travel solo without feeling like I was completely alone. I figured that I’d have a perfect balance of planned experiences and free time to explore on my own terms if I truly wanted to. That trip felt like REAL WORLD: EUROPE, but I left with life-long friends and endless memories.

I’ve since joined several group trips and I truly believe they’re the ultimate way to ease your way into solo travel without sacrificing your freedom. Despite the fact that I’ve been to Greece twice before, this trip led me to new adventures and discoveries. We visited the islands of Paros, Santorini, and Amorgos. We spent hours trekking across these islands, which allowed us to witness dramatic landscapes from a different perspective. We took cooking classes together and even learned a few traditional dances. We visited Greek churches and got lost inside traditional white villages. This trip made me fall even more in love with the country and its culture. It was made even more special by the group of strangers that I can now call friends. Here are some reasons you should consider giving group travel a try:

MEET NEW PEOPLE

I always feel nervous before group tours. There’s something scary about the thought of being stuck with strangers for an extended period of time. However, this could be the perfect solution for those of you who wish to travel without waiting around for others to get on board. You’ll have the support of a group while also having the freedom of a solo traveler if you truly wish. You’ll also have a solid group of like-minded people who share the same love for travel. In my opinion, there’s no better way to ease your way into solo travel. We ended up liking each other so much that we decided to extend our trip together! You never know!

GET LOCAL GUIDES

There’s nothing like being led by a local. If you want to truly immerse yourself in the culture and discover more about a country, then a local guide can help you do just that. These guides know the country like the back of their hands and they’re able to answer every question you may have. They’ve led countless groups and lived in Greece all of their lives. When it comes to multi-day treks and outdoor activities, knowledgable guides become a necessary safety precaution – especially for women traveling alone. I would have been reluctant to hike some of those trails on my own. Our guides cooked, partied, and danced with us until the very last day.

TRAVEL STRESS-FREE

Some of us love the trip planning process, while others prefer to show up and have a good time. Trip logistics can be a pain, especially in certain destinations. If you don’t know where to start or simply prefer the convenience of a curated trip, then a group tour is likely the best option. All you have to do is arrive and let the guides lead the way. They’re on-the-ground experts that have taken the time to create dynamic itineraries. I was able to discover the island of Amorgos, which I’d never heard of or seen before. There’s no way I would have visited on my own if I weren’t on this trip. I saw sites that I probably wouldn’t have been to by myself. Transportation, boat transfers, accommodation, and even most meals were included in the trip total. This can release the pressure that most of us feel to plan the ‘perfect’ trip!

Despite my initial reservations, I left this trip connected to myself and the world around me. I pushed myself both physically and socially. I got the chance to see Greece from a completely different perspective and I’d happily do it all over again. The daily hikes were exactly what my mind and body needed while the new friends I made were the icing on the cake. I stayed in a hostel while I was there –  the Auberge NOLA.

I could have stayed in a hotel but I saved $200+ by staying in a hostel.

And in my mind…..more savings = MORE TRAVEL + (more money for good food). So…it was a no-brainer for me.

This hostel is probably the friendliest hostel I’ve ever stayed in. Everyone was SO friendly from the jump! As soon as I arrived & walked out to the courtyard outside, I was greeted by 10 + strangers sitting around the table playing King’s cup.

Everyone at the table had an accent. 2 girls were from Germany, 2 guys were from New Zealand, 1 guy was from England, 1 guy was from Syria, 1 girl was from South Korea, and only 1 other guy was from the US.  Many of them were traveling the US for the first time.

We all talked, battled it out in King’s Cup(I Lost), and then headed out for a night on Frenchman street. We had such a good time together each night despite the fact that we’d just met. It’s crazy how easy it can be to meet awesome people when everyone is open. No matter where I go, my favorite part of travel is the people I meet and the experiences we share – even if for just a few hours. Even if I never see these people again, it feels good to know that they played a role in my travel experience.

I talk about how easy it is to make friends at a hostel my last post. Hostels are perfect for solo travelers, budget travelers, or anyone that might be looking for a friendly atmosphere.

I’ve said it before – they’re NOT for everyone. I’m not saying I’d choose a hostel over a comfortable & private hotel/rental every time because I wouldn’t. I do know that staying in a hostel could bring many one step closer to being able to afford that trip you’ve been wanting to take. So as long as it’s clean & safe, who cares where you sleep? You’ll be out exploring anyway!

Sure, you’ll be sleeping in bunk beds like you’re at 6th-grade summer camp. but you’ll save hundreds of dollars and you just might meet some pretty cool people.

I’m so glad we decided to go because we had such an amazing time. I recently created a video highlighting some parts of a trip and now I’ll leave you with beautiful photos to show you a bit more. Enjoy!

Arrived into Faro, Portugal just after dark. We barely made our flight from London. We took an Uber from the airport and spent the night wandering the streets of faro with a guy we met at our hostel. a member of the portuguese army, He was born & raised in the country so he told us all about its history.

Tip: If you want to explore the Algarve, Faro is the airport to fly in to. 

Our hostel was probably one of the cleanest, nicest hostels I’d ever been in(video coming soon!). It also had a really nice rooftop terrace where everyone meets for breakfast in the a.m. look at that view! 

We only spent the morning in Faro before deciding to rent a car and go on a roadtrip along the coast! Thankfully, Ashley knows how to drive a stick-shift because that was the only rental option. We hadn’t even considered that the car might not be automatic, so that’s something to keep in mind if you plan on renting cars in another country!

Walked to the local market to buy some fruit, meat, & cheese for the next few days. Everything was so tasty!

Spent ~1 hour driving into Portimao, a small beach town with plenty of shops & cafes.

This beach was quite crowded, but we sat out in the shade, snacked for a bit, & enjoyed the views before heading to Praia de Marinha.

We raced to Praia de Marinha to catch the sunset. We made it just in time.

We slept at the beach & woke up with the sun. I walked back down to the sand, while Ashley read in the car. Other than the birds, the only footsteps were my own.

Walked down plenty of steps to get to the beach – only to realize we had the whole place to ourselves! So amazing! I write about that experience here.

Happy Monday friends! Today, I am sharing some photos from my time spent in London. Thankfully, the weather was perfect for the short time that I was there. Sunny skies & light winds – a contrast to London’s typical rainy weather. Of course, I visited some of London’s well known tourist attractions like Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham palace. Even though it’s to ideal to avoid overcrowded tourist spots, there are some attractions that must be seen. Thanks to London’s diverse population, we enjoyed amazing local Indian & Caribbean eats. Since London is such a big city, I know that there is so much more to see. I can’t wait to return and dive deeper into the culture.

“Let’s skinny-dip!”, I whispered to Ashley. I whispered as if we were in a crowded room, but it was just us. Not another person in sight. I was excited because this was something I’d never really thought about doing, but that moment seemed like the perfect opportunity if there ever was one. 

We arrived to Praia de Marinha just as the sun was setting. I was admiring a breathtaking view as I paced back and forth to capture photos. We began walking down the steps nearby to see the sun set from the beach. We arrived to the beach only to discover that we were alone. It was just Ashley & I, surrounded by massive caves and crashing waves. This was by far the most beautiful beach I’d ever seen.  We snapped a few photos & then put our belongings away to explore. Praia de Marinha is small beach – smaller than the building I work in, so we could easily wander from one end to the other end of the beach.

And so we skinny-dipped. Once it got completely dark, we hurriedly ripped our swimsuits off  & ran into the Sea. We ran, we jumped, we screamed, and we laughed. The only sounds were our laughs & the of the crashing waves. The caves towered over us as we laid in the damp sand. We wandered from one edge of the beach to the other, with only the moonlight lighting our paths

I’ve never felt so free. I was in pure awe of the beauty around us. I felt a natural high, as if I had magically gained all of the energy in the world.  My senses were heightened & I felt such a rush. I felt electric. I felt refreshed. I felt humbled. Isn’t it crazy how nature can make you feel more connected & more calm? 

In those moments, I felt an immense amount of gratitude – for life and for God. I was reminded of our smallness. I was also reminded that we each have purpose, despite how small we are. 

Who knew we’d be skinny-dipping in the Algarve? Thank God for friends who say ‘yes!’. Thank God for life’s simple pleasures. And Thank God for his creation.

Hey guys! So I’m finally uploading a short clip of my skydiving experience in Prague. This was something I always wanted to do and at the last minute I made a decision to shell out the cash and go for it! I was in Prague, so why the heck not? I can’t say that it was the most life changing experience as some have described it. It was amazing nonetheless, but it all happened so fast! The experience is probably extremely different for everyone because we all react to things differently. Surprisingly, it wasn’t nearly as scary as I expected. Looking back, Its hard to believe that I was actually floating above the clouds. This is an experience I’m extremely grateful to have. If you’re thinking about going skydiving, go for it!

Are Photos and videos included? 

No, they are not but I do feel like they’re worth it since the experience seems to go by so quickly.

Do you need training?

No – Since you’ll be Tandem Skydiving(Attached to someone), you won’t really be doing anything. They pretty much take care of everything for you. There are only 3 steps/rules that they tell you before jumping.

Is it scary?

Honestly, I didn’t think so. I don’t get very nervous with these type of things so it definitely varies for each person. Every jumper in the plane was actually extremely calm. I expected to be way more scared than I actually was when I was about to jump.

What does it feel like?

It’s a really hard feeling to describe. Very surreal! Like I said above, it all happens so fast. Time does stop a bit when you are up in the air though. Just knowing that you are above the clouds is a pretty insane feeling.

Would you do it again?

Eh, its pretty expensive so I’m not so sure since I’ve already done it once. I enjoyed it so maybe one day in the far future.

“What did it feel like?” and “Was it scary?” are the two most common questions that I get when I tell people about my skydiving experience. I always feel bad, because I can’t really explain what I felt at the moment. It was amazing, surreal, exhilarating, and unbelievable. Above all, it was freeing.

While we were in Prague, we actually planned on going bungee-jumping. Once we found a skydiving company, that idea was out of the window. So, we just went. I’d always wanted to go skydiving, so why not now and why not in Prague?

Fear was never really an emotion that arose when I thought of skydiving. After all, I knew I had more chances of dying in a car crash than I would while skydiving. I just knew it would be fun AND exhilarating AND expensive BUT once in a lifetime.  So, why the heck not right?

We rode in a very long car ride to a rural location and on the way there, I told my parents I loved them very much – ya know, just incase.  After what seemed like forever, I awoke from my usual car nap and we were at our skydiving location. We arrived at a warehouse and we thought(hoped) for some type of training…but, nope! They gave us 3 rules/steps and said, “Now, lets go jump!”. At this point, it started to become real. *What if I messed up one of the three rules?* *Lord KNOWS I’ll probably forget the rules by the time I get in the sky!* *If I mess up, I won’t even get to live to tell the story* These were the thoughts that were going through my head. The crazy thing is that I wasn’t necessarily scared at all, but I really began to realize that there were only one of two outcomes in this situation. It really hit me that this was actually a pretty crazy thing to do. Taking a risk like this was empowering because of that reality.

It obviously went well, because I’m still here. I was the first out of the plane and it all happened so fast. I didn’t even have time to think or to be scared. It was SO freeing to be above the clouds(one of my favorite parts of nature) and then fall right through them. How out of this world is that? It was such a thrill in the truest form. And if I can ever bring myself to cough up the money again, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Although skydiving wasn’t a scary experience for me, it caused me to begin thinking about the fears that I do have. At that point in my life(several months ago), I was pretty fearful of starting a completely new chapter in life – essentially a fear of the unknown and a fear of major change. Completely new people in a new place doing a new thing and stepping into a new unknown. While this was slightly exciting, it was mostly scary because I had no idea what the outcome of everything would be. Despite my feelings being completely understandable and valid at that point in time, I couldn’t allow them to prevent action on my part.

We all have fears. We each have external such as a fear of heights, a fear of spiders, a fear of dying in a car crash, etc. Most of these fears actually protect us from danger – which is very necessary. Then there are the fears that affect us more deeply – fear of death, fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of the unknown etc. These are the fears that interrupt our daily lives and keep up us at night. These are the fears that hold us back from making decisions and/or taking steps forward.

If I could do something as seemingly ‘scary’ as jumping out of a plane, what reason do I have to be fearful of the small things? I shouldn’t fear moving to a new place, starting a new chapter in life, speaking up, taking a risk, the unknown, or anything else, for that matter. We have to ask ourselves what the worst thing that could happen is. Most importantly, we need to ask ourselves what the best thing is that could happen. It could honestly go either way and unless we choose to focus on the latter, fear wins.

Fear causes us to think and react backwards. How could we be afraid of something that hasn’t even happened yet? How could we know that it would happen? How could we be afraid of an idea that doesn’t even exist outside of our mind? Thats the problem with fear. Its not reality. We can’t predict the future. Even if we could, we couldn’t control it.

Think about the negative thoughts you have. Are they actually fears? Think about these and then really examine why you have them and where they came from. Does this fear actually make sense? Is it actually protecting you or could it be holding you back? Ask yourself what could be the worse possible outcome if you were to face it. Could you handle that outcome? Would you survive it?

Fear is crippling. Fear is damaging. It holds us back from reaching our full potentials without us even knowing it. Our fears keep us all safe(or so we think!) and cozy inside of our comfort zone. Each time we sit behind our fears, we unknowingly miss out on opportunities and possibilities that could serve us in great ways. We don’t know what God has planned for our lives and fear prevents us from ever seeing that. We don’t know what awaits us on the other side of fear, but life will go on either way. As humans, fear will always be an emotion that we experience but we must not let it prevent us from living fully.

On this review, I answer every question you have about EF College break. You most likely stumbled across their site via ads or word of mouth. Well, so did I! Is this Study Abroad?

Nope! You don’t have to be enrolled in school either. As long as you’re 18-28 years old, you can travel with EF.

How does it all work?

You can go onto their site and view the various trips and locations that they have available. You will then select the trip that interests you, choose a date, and make a downpayment. You also have the option to extend your trip or arrive before the departure date at no cost. You will begin making the monthly payments and count down until the days of your trip. On the day of departure, you’ll make your way the local airport and head off for your trip!

Is this the most cost efficient way to travel?

Most likely not. You could plan a budget trip like this by yourself if you’re able to land some great deals. However, most people don’t have the time or experience to plan this type of trip alone. I essentially paid for convenience and I don’t regret it at all, especially since I’d never traveled to Europe before. For my trip specifically, I found it to be  the most affordable tour company with everything that was included.

If you do happen to find the same trip somewhere else for cheaper, they will price-match it. You also can’t beat the monthly payment plan that they offer!

How much free time do you really have?

About 50% of your time is unplanned. You will have time to relax and/or explore as you please. There is a daily itinerary, but are not required to stay with the group. Aside from travel between countries, you can choose to venture off or simply sleep in. There were days where we completely did our own thing or decided to sleep in after a late night out. Some people met up with other traveling friends or extended their stay in a country & met up with us when they wanted.

You’ll most likely want to participate in the tours because you will be visiting major travel sites like The Colloseum, The Eiffel Tower, Versailles, Anne Frank Museum, the Louvre, etc. You have to see these places at least once. You’ll usually get to skip the lines for sites that have 1-3 hour waits. I actually felt better about having some days planned because it forced me to wake up early and make the most out of my day.

Should I sign up alone?  

If you don’t have friends to sign up with you, sign up anyway! About 50% of our group came alone. You will definitely make friends! In fact, I believe going on the trip alone is a better experience because you’re more likely to step out of your comfort zone and be-friend people that you normally wouldn’t. You also don’t feel accountable for another person and their desires.

What’s it like traveling with strangers?

We had around 40 people in our group and let’s just say that it was an adventure. EF adds everyone to a Facebook group so you can somewhat connect before the trip. One of the best things about traveling in a group is that there is always someone to do something with. If your friend doesn’t want to go to the Anne Frank Museum, there will most likely be someone else who wants to go along with you. Some people want to go out every night and some people prefer to stay in. There are so many different personalities in a large group like this. You won’t always like everyone and sometimes people will annoy you, but you all turn into one big family by the end of the trip. You’ll make friends quicker than normal because you are together so often. The nights that we went out as a large group were so much fun. Our whole group, including our tour guide, is planning to meet up in New Orleans very soon and I can’t wait.

What are the accommodations like?

You will stay in a combination of hotels and boutique hostels. The accommodations weren’t always in the center of the city, but they were always near a metro. The hotels are pretty standard and the hostels are geared towards young travelers, so they’re actually really cool. You’re typically sharing a hostel room with 2-6 people, which isn’t as bad as it seems. We only had one bad experience at a hostel. Thankfully, We were reimbursed for that stay and treated to a dinner by EF because enough people complained.

Wondering what a Hostel is like? 

What is transportation like?

The flights are pretty standard. You’ll receive multiple complimentary meals and beverages. Most international airlines will have a really good selection of movies and tv shows to help pass the time. I sleep like a baby on flights( okay, and everywhere else too!) and I can’t stay awake for more than 2 hours – so none of this was of concern for me. Nonetheless, don’t allow the long flights scare you!

We traveled between countries by bus mostly. The bus rides can be very long, but this gives you the opportunity to wind down or write in a journal after moving around so much. It was also great to be able to sleep on the bus after a long night.

While in the cities, we received subway tickets just incase we wanted to explore on our own time. This wasn’t always easy, but it made for some great adventures and stories. Taxis and Ubers are also an option.

Finally, you’ll probably walk more than you have ever walked in your life and I’m not exaggerating. On the bright side, you’ll have plenty of chances to walk off all of the wine and bread you’re bound to consume. (So.Much.Bread)

Should I be able to speak the language?

It helps, but it’s not required. You will be in central regions where most people speak English. Knowing common greetings and phrases will certainly help, but you definitely don’t need to be fluent to go on the trip. There may be times where you are going to need to communicate with people in their native language, but you’ll find that effort and body language are the best helpers.

How is the Food?

Breakfast is provided at the hotel every single day. The breakfasts weren’t anything special, but it’s nice to have something free to put in your stomach before starting the day. Other than that, you’ll be paying for and selecting your own food.

Of course, food will vary by location. If you’re a picky eater like myself, you may be nervous about the food in other countries. There will be food that you like and food that you dislike. I honestly didn’t enjoy the food in many cities, but you learn to manage. Trying new foods is a large part of the experience, so it doesn’t hurt to try things. If all else fails, most places will at least have a few american fast-food restaraunts. I’d recommend Yelp! and TripAdvisor to discover really good restaurants beforehand and while on the trip. It also always helps to ask the locals!

How was the customer service?

Communicating with EF was extremely simple. They were always so quick to respond. Online chat seemed to be the easiest way to reach them. You don’t have to communicate with them very much, due to such an effortless sign-up process.

Favorite Cities?

Paros(Greek Isles), Rome, Amsterdam, Munich, and Paris – all for different reasons.

Would you recommend traveling with EF?

YES! YES! YES! If you are an inexperienced traveler, I highly recommend traveling with EF College Break. Most things are planned out for you, so it’s extremely convenient. There were a few hiccups, but you can expect the the same issues if you were to plan the trip by yourself. If I had gone alone or just planned the trip with a few friends, I probably would have been so lost, especially since I don’t speak any language other than English. Spontaneity is cool until it ruins your trip. A lot of people don’t  have the time or patience to plan an extensive trip to a place they’ve never been and/or they don’t even know where to start. If you have to convince a worried parent, it might ease their mind to know that you are going in a group instead of alone. You’ll get the chance to learn about the world,  meet some incredible people, and have the most fun you’ve probably ever had. I’ve traveled to other countries but it was always associated with study abroad in some way. Those trips were all very special, but it was so relieving to not have to worry about school and/or work at all.

I had the absolute time of my life and I’m so grateful that I was able to see a new part of the world !Overall, I had an amazing experience. I’d always dreamed of a Eurotrip and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to go on a trip like this. I was able to cross so many things off of my bucket list – skydiving(in Prague), visiting the Anne Frank Museum, seeing the red light district, island-hopping in Greece, riding a gondola in venice, taking a cooking class in Rome, visiting Cinque Terre, partying till 6am in Munich, visiting the Dachua concentration camp,  partying at an ice pub in Prague, and so much more. I can’t even begin to explain how much fun I had. We have stories for days. More than the sites I saw, the people I met along with the experiences that we shared were unforgettable. We met so many people from around the world that embraced us as their own, shared great conversation with us, and showed us a good time. This is one of those things that you can’t put a price on. These type of experiences are worth so much more than clothes, restaurant food, drinks, etc. I wouldn’t trade this experience for the anything. Like I said, there were a few downsides to traveling with a large tour group, but that didn’t make the trip any less great. There are going to be downsides to traveling alone, with friends, and/or with a large group. I got the chance to see so much of the world in just 35 days. The days were long but there was so much fun to be had. Everyday I wish I could go back to these good times, which were so full of adventure.

• Pack lighter than you normally would. Most hotels/hostel elevators are tiny – refer to travel blogs if you need help with this
• Sign up for the excursions if they sound like something you’d be interested in
• You don’t need a phone plan – most hostels, hotels, and restaurants will have free wi-fi. Plus, its nice to unplug sometimes
• You know the saying, “nothing in life is free”? This rings true in Europe. Nothing is free!!! – not the bathroom, the water, or anything else. Be prepared to spend some change here and there, every so often on things you normally wouldn’t in the US.
